Any experience with AustPost Travel Insurance?

Just wondering whether anyone has ever had to make a claim through Aust Post Travel Insurance, and if so, what was your experience in doing so please?

I just spotted their pamphlet recently and the prices seemed very competitive at first glance.

I hope I don't ever need to deal with the Post Office in person though because we got ourselves an angry bunch in our area :) They haven't got a clue about the finer details of passport/identity services (you'd have to ring the APIS) so I imagine arguing an insurance policy would be an absolute nightmare. If you feel screwed it'll be interesting when you report a government business enterprise to another government agency :)

It's also amazing that Australia's largest retail network is government-owned and expanding its product lines non-stop. If they hired friendlier people and extended their hours I'd welcome their anti-competitive influence.

    • I see in the latest AusPost catalogue that they are now selling cheap Brother sewing machines! Sadly, fixing the endless queue lines doesn't seem to be priority.

    • Off topic but "Talk about angry and unfriendly", your not referring to a suburb in Dapto are you?
Never ever have I met a more unfriendliness and rood bunch of people in my life with the worst service out.

I bought it for a trip last year and it was definitely very very competitive. If I remember, buying them in the Post office itself was also significantly cheaper than getting it off the website… strange, I know.

I'd also like to say that I've been lucky because the 4 local Auspost offices that I frequent all have lovely people working at them. Haven't had a bad experience at all. About the only thing I can complain about is the admittedly long lines, usually late in the day.

Anyway, back on topic, since I've been fortunate enough NOT to need to claim on the travel insurance, I can't say how good or bad they are.

    • Thanks for the tip for going in-store to save money - I'll have to check that out soon as I'm leaving in a month. As a stingy backpacker, I was thinking of getting the basic plan since I think I'm screwed with flight cancellations either way but I'll have to read through the terms and conditions. It's cheap enough to add a bit more to get the $0 excess as well. I think there should be a law that says the medical component must always have a free (for premium deals) or a reduced excess to ensure people actually go the doctor when things go wrong. There are loads of backpackers in Asia that try to avoid paying for excesses after sustaining some potentially life-threatening conditions that wouldn't know the symptoms to look out for.

You're so lucky to have non-intimidating people working at 4 different post offices. My local has had angry people working there for since I was a kid and it's hard to change to a new place since it's so much closer than the rest.

Hi there,I have piuchase travel ins with AUst Post. Unfortunately I had an accident whilst in Bali & had to make a claim. Although the process was simple enough ,the claim did take a while. Saying that I was reimbursed all my expenses including the cost of replacing my spectacles that were damaged . I would consider using them again as I was happy with the final outcome, Agnes

I used it on my last trip to Thailand. Was the cheapest I could find that included lost baggage and our iPads etc. 2 adults 2 kids ( kids under 21 are free with aus post insurance ) my daughter got sick on the plane and spewed everywhere through the airport, hotel etc. next morning I called for a dr in Bangkok. I rang the aus post insurance about this and they were so helpful then a nurse rang me back in 15mins and stayed on the line with me while te dr was there etc. I didn't need to claim because it only cost me $90 Australian but I will be using them again nxt month for Bali trip.

  • Blew a tyre on a hire car that had to be replaced, and thought it would be covered but it was not. They said that if is not covered under the hire agreement it is also not covered under the Travel Insurance Policy. Bye bye $180 for the 18" tyre cost.
