What is your all time favourite game and why?

Hey guys. If you could list one or two of your favourite games from your entire life of playing games what would they be and why?

My favourite game of all time was Resident evil 4 on Gamecube. I loved the graphics for that time and the fact parts of previous games were in it but a lot of new places too. It stuck to the original Resident evil style of scary parts like turning a corner to hear those freaky looking creatures but not being able to see them because they climbed up and along walls, opening doors to have dogs smash through glass then chase you and having to go back because you forgot something. . It was a lot of fun and I still play the game to this day :)

Another one of my other favourites is the Mario kart Wii. I only play online mode these days but it's still a lot of fun trying to beat other people in other countries :)and for Nintendo the online mode is pretty dam good.

And my 3rd is Goldeneye 64! Best single player and multiplayer of all time, so many lvls, do many difficulties, so many cheats and so little time! The game had it all and every now and then I get my old 64 out and get Natalya out of the bunker :) I loved the sound of the remake Goldeneye 007 for Wii and it was good but the online mode sucked major and there were hardly any lvls.

Comments

    • Man I enjoyed The Sims a lot. The music was top notch…newer Sims games just don't compare…

  • Dwarf Fortress. I don't care that it's broken, unfinished, buggy and incredibly uber impossible to learn and understand, it's still one of my favourite things to go back to, with the ultimate replayability.

Also it's 100% free forever and I'm cheap.

SO yes. It's my favourite game ever due to the depth, replayability, ability to personalise almost everything, and the stories that come from it.

Though XCOM and Mount & Blade come pretty close.

  • Deus Ex, the first part. Human Revolution is also very decent, but the first part is just incredible. Absolutely love it.

  • New School: The Last Of Us. Amazing
Old School: Final Fantasy 7 holds a special place. Was the first RPG I played on my PS1. Well the first major game really. Had me hooked.

  • +1

    Mega Man 2 (NES)
all time favorite game, love the music. I use the stage select as my phone ringtone.

Metal Gear Solid - The Twin Snakes PSX/Gamecube
just ahead of its time for easter eggs/production values.

MEtal Gear Peace Walker - PSP
hands down an awsome exp for a psp game

The fact you had to use the codec freq on the back of the game box to call Meryl what funny.

    Final Fantasy X (PS2)
    best/saddest ending story

    Final Fantasy Tactics (PSP/PSX)
    great game play

    Mortal Kombat 9 (PS3)
best remake of a old fighting series

    King of Fighter 98
great balance of character/fighting style and gameplay

    • +1 for FF Tactics. Played through the GBA version at least 4-5 times, the storyline and character development never ceases to be interesting each time.

  • +2

Lemmings on the Amiga is probably my all time favourite. I guess I loved it because of the challenge.

To name a couple more as whenever I have a retro Mame session I seem to always play Bubble Bobble, Strider, and SF2.

    • Lemmings is one I forgot to mention, though I had it on the PC.
      Cute little critters, very addictive.

  • Sorry double post

  • +2

from the days of the 486 DX
    - UFO enemy Unknown (Classic!)
    - XCOM terror from the depth ( spent months on this and still occasionally play it now)
    - Warcraft 2 (Soo in love with this game, I can still remember the midi music in my head)

    Current one:
    - XCOM enemy unknown
    - Shogun Total War 2

    • …and of course "Paramecium" being the currency in the excellent arcade game "Forgotten Worlds". 8)

  • Max Payne (PC game)

    • I remember this was in the very late 90's and was actually one of the few games I finished first.
  • +1

    Multiplayer (XBox):
For longer, intense play and loads to do: BF3
For short duration and share fun: COD black ops.

    Single player Fav.(XBox):
Batman Archam Asylum Xbox is my fav. (Archam City is not bad either.)
Lara croft and the guardian of life.

      Inexperienced gamer says hi. :)

  • +1

    Super Mario Bros 3
    Streetfighter 2 Turbo

    • Hadouken

  • Kingdom Hearts, the first one on PS2 :D
    - Bought it bundled with my PS2 at what I remember it to be at a bargain price back then.
    - Disney nostalgia + enjoyed the storyline
    - Replayed the Remastered edition…so good

Final Fantasy VI (Yes 6, not the very popular 7)
    - I enjoyed the story and characters
    - Was so excited when they released an Android version and I had to play it over again :D

    Pokemon Sapphire/Ruby on GBA
    - Played every Pokemon version but the thing I missed in most versions that was in this…your own secret base.
    - Like every pokemon game, spent countless hours collecting, battling and I seem to love any pokemon soundtrack :P

    Special mentions:
    - FFX/X-2 => Love the characters/story and can't wait for the Remastered edition coming out soon!
    - Zelda: Ocarina of time => Yea, yea I know heaps of people said this one :P

    • Secret bases were pretty neat, but I hated those holes in them…and the only way to cover them up was to wait for the special sale at the top floor of Lilycove Dep. Store…which rarely ever happened.

    Bubble Bobble from C64 days.
Planescape: Torment made me fall in love with RTS and the writing was incredible.
original Unreal Tournament It redefined FPS and set a benchmark for graphics at the time.
Max Payne The first perfectly done graphic novel game. That story was tonally perfect.
Batman Arkham Asylum One of the few games I couldnt stop playing on the modern consoles.

    • original Unreal Tournament It redefined FPS and set a benchmark for graphics at the time.

I loved UT, but I wouldn't go this far. It came out of nowhere and threatened Q3A, particularly with team play. The engine was quite rough however, and the network code really fell apart when there were more than a few people in a game. I liked the visual style more than Q3A, but to say it set a benchmark (or evn as good as Q3A) is pretty inaccurate. Also you needed Glide for it to look/run any good before the final patch.

    • +2

      Bubble Bobble! Forgot about that!!!

  • +1

    Jagged Alliance II
    Commandos II

  • FINAL FANTASY VII

Everything about the character, the story, and more importantly.. the MUSIC! I even have this Aeris theme playing on my mind as I am typing this!

Probably one game that really takes me into their world.

    SUIKODEN 1 & 2

This 2D RPG is another that managed to take me into the world and really feel alive in it. Love the numerous characters, the storyline (and its possibility for multiple alternative ending), and the fact that its a 2D game.

    THE MYST SERIES

Even though I only managed to finish 1 out of the whole series (and thats thanks to a walkthrough), its a really great game at the time. I love the concept of mystery first person POV game, and is still my fave type of game until today (eg. The Room on iOS & Android).

BROKEN SWORD: THE SHADOW OF THE TEMPLARS

My fave detective point and click game in PS, absolutely funny and interactive.

    • I think the ps 1 version of broken sword blows in comparison to pc

The ps2 version of the angel of death was tops.

  • +1

System Shock 1 and 2 or Ultima Series followed by Wing Commander and Privateer.

  • +4

    I would like to add

    Star Control 2

Still have incredibly fond memories of this one. Thank goodness there is a collaborative fan made faithful remake for modern systems!

    The Ur-Quan Masters
    http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

    • +2

Yes! Star Control 2 is a truly amazing game. Lots of fun exploring new star systems, running into bizarre alien races, "talking" with them (a surreal experience with some, hilarious for others), puzzling out hidden secrets on planets, and the fighting was superb. I think it'd be a perfect candidate for a reboot or a (proper) sequel.

Fond memories of playing melee mode against friends. Very tactical in your choice of ships, and such a wide array of abilities, kept you very much on your toes.

Hmmm, I'm feeling the urge to play it again.

  • -5

    Call of Duty series.

Each one a winner. I still play them again from the first to the most recent. Can't wait for the next release later this year.

    • I only really enjoyed cod4 and mw2, others are all hype.

    • -1

You know everyone can see that you're trolling.

  • +2

Super Smash Bros 64 was my favorite multiplayer game ever, closely followed by Goldeneye 64, just so much fun playing 4 player with mates.

And my favorite single player game ever was Kingdom Hearts on PS2 followed By Jak and Daxter.

My very first games I ever played (was on PC) and hence love were Descent, NFS road & track, and a mech game I can't remember the name of, something like oddwars.

    • +1

Oh my god I can't believe I forgot Super smash bros All their games rule except the online version of the Wii which sucks major

  • I'd have to say Tony hawke for normal xbox.

And xbox 360 definitely would have to be Homefront!

    Overall: Theme Hospital (PC)

^^ Many, many personal reasons that you'll appreciate if you think Bullfrog were awesome and the best at making games (and with the exception of Rockstar Games with GTA are still unmatched). Theme Hospital has the perfect recipe for graphics (which have aged pretty well considering they are 640x480 pixel art based), gameplay, balance of micromanagement (i.e. not limiting and not overburdening), the level progression (and option to continue building your level), the humour, the difficulty (if you chose to do it), multi-player mode etc… it's about the sole reason I keep a Windows XP Virtual Machine floating around (IPX Networking). Owned the CD since 1996, and I still can't get enough of it. I don't think you could possibly remake it either unless it was about doing less bugs, higher resolution pixel art graphics and perhaps a map editor (more layouts, procedural rendering, multiplayer that doesn't die after 4 in-game years) and I'd be a very happy person (watching Corsix-TH closely!).

Otherwise - my other picks are pretty generic:

    (By Category)
Open World: GTA Vice City (PC)
    Driving: FlatOut 2 (PC)
    Arcade: Tetris (NES)
Adventure: Faxanadu (NES) / Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)
RTS: Age of Empires 2 (PC)
    Shooter: Duke Nukem 3D (PC)

    (Honourable Mention)
    Interstate '76
    Evil Genius
The NES in General (Best difficult games. I miss games being overly complex with no save / cheat options).

    • OMG forgot all about Interstate 76!! Thanks for the memories!

  • TIE Fighter - Excellent campaign with a great story voice acting. I wish someone would remake this with updated graphics!

Baldur's Gate II - I'm surprised nobody's mentioned it yet!

  • CS:GO. It's just so amazing and addictive, I love it.

  • I'm loving this thread… Reading over others' answers and thinking, "(profanity) yeah, I haven't played that in ages…"

I forgot to mention the original Fallout game… I thought Interplay did brilliantly with this… It was one of those games that I still don't know how I came to own, but really glad I did :D

    Halo/2/3/ODST/4
It started with me buying XBox just for Halo and turned into a love for Xbox!
The Gameplay/Art design/Music/Vehicles everything about it is so much fun and exciting to me.
I have All consoles. and have owned just about every console. I have bought 100's of games on my 360 and enjoyed most of them. Thats why its my all time favorite console.

From Steve Vai doing 2nd Halo theme song to all the rocking and killer instruments in the Halo music. From all the Amazing voice actor in Halo! The Amazing Multi player.
That made Xbox number online gaming system.

I played all Halo's so many times and they bring me so much joy!. i also am pretty awesome at the competitive aspect of Halo online.

I am Rocking 5 consoles and one handheld at the moment

    Here are my favorite games:
    Constructor.
    Mob rule.
    Metal Fatigue.
    Anno 1503.
    Starcraft 2.
    Home world 1 & 2.

    SNES:
    Fire Emblem.
    Front Mission.
Rock and roll. - Some cool music in here.
    Double Dragon.
    Theme Park.
    And of course Mega Man.

The pity is Constructor doesn't works so well in multilayer (it disconnected after 10 mins played), same thing happened to Anno 1503.
Metal Fatigue ( likes the Pacific Rim movies ) was and still awesome in gameplay, however for many reasons MS didn't make a sequel.
All of my lunch money went to hire SNES machine. Now i can just play them online … technology eh.

    Edit: I think i forgot Z.

  • No way can I pick 2 when I wasted my entire childhood and part of adulthood on games. Some of my most popular ones are

    doom2
    commander keen
    Warcraft 2 (I think)
    transport tycoon deluxe
    commandos
    prince of Persia 1&2
…I'll leave it at that as I could go on…

REX NEBULAR and the cosmic gender bender!

  • Ocarina of time and Half Life 2 Only 2 games I have played through multiple times, And still play to this day.

  • Team Fortress Classic

  • Single player:
    Half-Life 2
    Bioshock
    Batman Arkham

    Co-op/Multiplayer:
    Duke Nukem 3D
    Quake
    Portal 2

  • Used to love Habbo Hotel. I played it from 2003 - about 2006/2007. Probably the geekiest thing I ever played. Never paid for any of the virtual items though thankfully. Made some mad (online) friends. Only problem was back when I started it was all UK based so not many were online at a normal AU time!

console based.. probably WWF Smackdown 1 or 2. Actually, any of the Smackdown games up until Smackdown vs Raw. Wasted many a hours playing the career mode with my brother on the PS1/PS2 and simulating the matches when we were playing each other so we wouldn't feel bad about winning/losing! Shame the controls got complicated after them.

Whoa! Lots if games to just narrow down to a few - but here goes:

    virtua fighter 2
Nothing, I mean nothing has beaten up the impact of this game for me when I booted the game up for the first time back in the day' First 3d fighter I played, amazing polygonal rotating based graphics' amazing cd quality bgm coming out of the fresh SEGA Saturn (the massive graphical jump form a mega drive was significant - why that feeling hasn't been replicated these days I don't know) - the deep gameplay mechanics as we kids got the hang of it on Vs matches as the days passed ~

    Sonic 2, 3 & knuckles
Basically I tend to like sonic adventure 2 on the dc nowadays, but man oh man the amount of times I played these mega drive games was bordering the excessive! So many years ! I somehow became emotionally attached to it, till this day' something bout the mix of great atmosphere, characters, bgm, great game and graphics back then'

    Mgs2
I did not expect anything like this! First playstation branded console bought after the demise of SEGA (rip DC) but man, even the music was great to this day! ( rebought remastered on ps3)

    Honourable mentions:
nights into dreams ( the game was and still is great - plus the score attack depth of its gameplay is a bonus)
sega rally championship on the saturn
    tekken 2,3
ico & shadow of the colousus
    grandia 2
    chrono trigger
zelda: wind waker (first zelda game)
    mario kart 64
the goonies, gradius and knightmare on msx
super mario world and super mario 2
    wipeout 2097
tomb raider 1 on Saturn & tomb raider reimagine
    journey
    portal 2
    bayonetta

    ………………

God!!! can't seem to narrow to just 1 or 2 games :(

(Btw, Anyone here plays vf5:fs on ps3? How bout some online matches hey?)

  • I'd say WoW. Over 600 days played. I quit for neatly two years but I am back starting afresh. I absolutely love the fact that effort I put into the game continues to benefit me for years to come and doesn't end once I "complete" it.

What amazes me is I have barely even played tank or do a much. I have never roles Alliance. 600 days played and still so much to experience.

  • flappy bird

  • Street fighter 2 hyper edition
    Metal gear solid 1
    Yakuza 3

  • Forgot midnight wangan maximum tune 3, the ost gets me so hyped when I'm driving to work

    Final Fantasy VI and IX
    The Last of Us

    Doom, Hexen
Romance of the three Kingdoms 2, genghis Khan
    Fall out 1 2 and 3

    The Dig.

  • Multiplayer FPS in order by date
    Doom (Chainsaw)
    Duke3D (pipe bombs)
    Quake Series (rocket jump)
    Unreal Tournament Series (Multi-kill)
    Counter Strike Series (headshot)
One of the best and longest played FPS's was Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Free multiplayer game only. (I actually got side tracked posting this trying to find an updated version!)

Multiplayer Strategy in order by date.
    Warcraft I,II,III + Custom Games
    C&C
Starcraft + Custom Games (most played)
Own SC2, but haven't played it much.

    MMORPG's
    Everquest
World of Warcraft (over 6 years logged, mostly due to hanging out with mates who had moved away. gogo vent)
    Guild Wars 2

Introduced to games on an Atari using a tape drive.
Old School games like Sopwith, scorched earth, pango, america's cup, one must fall, bunch of arcade games as well, all the way up to current titles. Played the decades away.

I will say this, without mates playing the multiplayer side of the games.. they'd never of had the life we gave them.

Hanging out for Star Citizen using the Oculus Rift!

  • Final Fantasy III - Keffffffka!!!
Legend of Zelda -A Link to the past
Final Fantasy 7 on PSX Japanese version - had to use a walk through lol but it was good.. I shed a tear for Aerith.

  • Asylum (TRS-80 version 16k or 32k) - one of the first 1st person maze games.
Battlezone (MS Windows 1998) - Red Alert meets 1st person shooter.
Doom - great shareware distribution model.

  • I'm surprised noone mentions CLASH OF CLANS! It's my all time favourite and have been playing it every day now for nearly a year, you can chat online with your clanmates, share videos and teach each other how to clash better and yeah, the feeling of when you have enough gold to upgrade your defences is just so great!

  • +1

Wing Commander 3 - great game with a great story and story choices that altered the game way before it was mainstream. Plus you could fail missions but still continue the game, something that most games just don't let you do which doesn't make sense a lot of the time. A failed mission in WC3 sometimes opened up a whole branch of new missions.

Tribes 2 - freedom of movement. Capture the flag with jetpacks and skiing. A steep learning curve but oh so much fun when you've got it.

System Shock 1/2 - SHODAN was the artificial intelligence to really keep you in a panic

Reading through this thread makes me feel old that so many people's favourite games are mostly so recent…

  • +1

It started off with Commander Keen and Wing Commander 3

    then definitely

    Diablo 1 & 2

Leisure Suit Larry…ok maybe not this one.

And again… this is for the comment above :|

  • The most fun game? COD Modern Warfare 2.

It's definitely not the best game, but for pure fun and laughs, nothing beats Modern Warfare 2 for me. The amount of stupid and random stuff in it was just great, and after a long day of work it's definitely a good way to relax. Of course, it's not as fun if you're stuck on the other end, but hey, no game's perfect.

Here's just some of the fun stuff in the game:
One Man Army to give yourself infinite grenades or noob tubes
Noob toobing halfway across the map
    Commando. Nuff said.
Ninja knifer running around with infinite sprint
Javelin aiming at a random place and hoping it hits someone (it takes 10 seconds or so for the javelin to hit where you aim)
    Akimbo SMGs
    Akimbo 1887s/Rangers
The beginning of quickscoping, where everyone started doing it for fun but the tryhards took over soon after
    Throwing knives across the map
The heartbeat sensor that wasn't actually that overpowered because it took your attention off the screen, but everyone still complained about it.
Scavenging multiple claymores and setting traps everywhere you go
Overpowered killstreaks including nukes. Fun to use, but terrible when you get caught out by them.
    Etc etc…

  • Star Control II.

Early favourites: Cocktail cabinet (you get to sit down!) Asteroids and Galaxian, and stand up version of Crazy Kong (not Donkey Kong, because with CK you could go BEHIND the monkey to escape the fireballs without dying). I had these games 'worked out' so I used to play for so long and get such high scores, other kids would gather around to watch.

Later favourites: Outrun & G-Loc - because they had electric motors that made them move! And surround sound that seemed to be inside your head.

The kids and I still play all these (and more) on MAME.

Most hated games of all time:

    a. Space Ace. This was a stand up cabinet that used an LP-sized laser disc. It was like watching a cartoon. The hero was a dumb blonde guy whose nasal voice reminded me of Jerry Lewis. You had to follow a rote set of joystick moves. I think it cost something like $3 or $4 when ALL other games were still 20c or 40c. If you moved the joystick the wrong way on your first move - the game immediately ended! What a RIP OFF!!! It was a headache to watch because the laser disc would skip around according to your moves. You see what I mean here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YA8-y_zdL2E

The local pinball parlour had a printed list of the required moves sticky taped to the game cabinet that looked like this:

    1. Left, left, right, jump, up, left, down.
    2. Jump, right, right, right, down, up. (etc.)

It went on for something like 70 lines, and then had a request if anyone got that far and knew any further moves to let the coin change guy know so he could add it to the list.

It looks like fun in that youtube video - and did in the store too. But I only tried to play it 3 times, decided following a set of instructions wasn't a game - so I hated it.

    b. I also hated how video games were so much more advanced than home PC/video game rubbish that cost a fortune. So that includes anything that took 20-30 minutes (or more) to load, or required the monotonous typing of text answers to questions. i.e. Early Apple IIe, microbee, VIC20, C64, etc. "Pick up dagger." "Stab… something." Turn on light." B-oo-rrr-iiii-nnnnnn-ggggggg!

  • Actually, you can add Dragon's Lair to the most hated. Same problems as Space Ace. Both of them were so disjointed… A scene would struggle to play, you'd only hear part of what you were supposed to, then it would erratically jump to the next scene. So frustrating and unworthy of wasting a kid's money on to learn.

  • Starcraft 2, hands down.

  • Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis and Warcraft 2. both are amazing games that are still fun to play

    • Yes! I've got great memories of Fate of Atlantis.
Also, the music for Warcraft II was very memorable.

  • I have so many favourites. :)

    Counter-strike: Source

My first FPS I played online.
I played for three years online.
It definitely sharpened my skills before I started played COD4.

Warcarft II - It was so good you would actually finish the single player… multiple times. :)
    The multiplayer was countless fun.

Warcarft III was also good, but on a lesser level.

  • International Karate + (3 PLAYER FIGHTING GAME….5 YR OLD MIND BLOWN)
    Spy Hunter
    The Great Giana Sisters
    Boulder Dash
    Jungle Jill
    Baldies
    Skunny Kart
    Skunny Saves Pizza
    Word Rescue
    Kens Labyrinth
    Jazz Jackrabbit

  • 1st - Final Fantasy X
2nd - LoZ Ocarina of Time
    3rd - Guild Wars 2

    • Crash Team Racing
    • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

Very fond childhood memories of these games…

  • Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution soccer series.

I remember the weekends that we get a group of friends come over, have and play a night of world cup challenge.

  • Metal Gear Solid (PS1)

  • Bomb Jack on the Atari ST first game ever played 20+ years ago.

    doom everybody loves doom.

    • I was quite good at the Arcade version of that too. (Not any longer.) It's also on MAME.

Old School: Alpha Centauri (kind of like civilization, but with heaps of cool quotes and a nice way to learn about different ways of thinking)

    New School: Dota2

  • Any Legend of Zelda game (although I am heavily biased. Personally Majora's Mask was my most memorable as a child and Twilight Princess is also up there - I think it sticks with me more if the game freaks the hell out of me. Replaying is definitely more interesting when you've read the official timeline but that might just be me.)
    Also, Assassin's Creed 1.
I want to say Dragon Age: Origins but I figured out how to use console commands about halfway through and I couldn't resist. I lost interest soon after. Still, props to Bioware for all the elaborate storylines into all the species. Generally, I don't prefer the whole choose-your-character-and-fate sort of games (e.g. I never really got into Mass Effect) but DA:O was great for me while it lasted.
