What is your all time favourite game and why?

Hey guys. If you could list one or two of your favourite games from your entire life of playing games what would they be and why?

My favourite game of all time was Resident evil 4 on Gamecube. I loved the graphics for that time and the fact parts of previous games were in it but a lot of new places too. It stuck to the original Resident evil style of scary parts like turning a corner to hear those freaky looking creatures but not being able to see them because they climbed up and along walls, opening doors to have dogs smash through glass then chase you and having to go back because you forgot something. . It was a lot of fun and I still play the game to this day :)

Another one of my other favourites is the Mario kart Wii. I only play online mode these days but it's still a lot of fun trying to beat other people in other countries :)and for Nintendo the online mode is pretty dam good.

And my 3rd is Goldeneye 64! Best single player and multiplayer of all time, so many lvls, do many difficulties, so many cheats and so little time! The game had it all and every now and then I get my old 64 out and get Natalya out of the bunker :) I loved the sound of the remake Goldeneye 007 for Wii and it was good but the online mode sucked major and there were hardly any lvls.

    Dark Souls:

Gameplay is punishing and demands your respect if you want to succeed. Button-mashing goes straight out the window the second time you face the Asylum Demon lest you condemn yourself to face him and any potential future roadblock until you learn from your mistakes.

Your journey can be shared or impeded by others - Engage in jolly co-operation or smash the faces of the unprepared as a consequence and reminder of their lack of preparedness.

The lore is both engrossing and cryptic. The overall concept of being a part of the Accursed is a statement in itself: Everytime you get killed in battle, you don't die because you're already Undead. You simply pick yourself back up and reassess the situation at hand - What could you have done better?

I feel that despite the obvious fact that this is a game, there's a lot to learn if you read between the lines:

    • I wouldn't say there is much co-operation in dark souls. The "multiplayer" aspects are pretty buggy and broken. Sounded good on paper, was horribly executed in reality.

  • +1

Well…out of all my favourites, I'd say two of them are…man this is hard.

  • +3

Super Mario Bros: my very first game I finished!
Mass Effect Trilogy: ending be damned, I just love all of it!
Killzone 2/3: such an epic journey and that cliffhanger!
New Super Luigi U: my first 5 star rating!
Tomb Raider (reboot) finished that 100% on 360/ps3/ps4

    • +2

Oh you reminded me of another game I loved!! Super Mario world!! that game was soo much fun and took ages to finish and I loved the little island you would go around :)

      • Oh, heck yes… +1 for Super Mario World…

    • +1

Super Mario Bros: my very first game I finished!

Damn after almost 3 decades I still can't beat it :(

      • Really?!?!?
That was my favourite game. Once I'd finished it I then mastered finishing it without losing a single life!

Tetris and that annoying game you had to eat the balls and jump around on the 3D grid were a close tie for second :)

The original Hero's Quest by Sierra (later renamed to Quest For Glory), I lost entire school holidays playing that on the old 086, actually any of the old Sierra games (Leisure Suit Larry, Police Quest, Space Quest etc)… Secret Of Mana on the SNES also made one of my school holidays disappear… Metal Gear Solid 2 on the Playstation (that bloody radio frequency caused me grief)… Even the orginal SimCity was pretty neat…

    • Huge fan of Hero's quest. The thief class was the most versatile as you can populate each skill metric and Buff up

    • Couldn't agree more. Those old sierra games are legend. I preferred the older ones where you had to type in commands. As opposed to the newer point and click versions.

  • +1

Ocarina of Time. It's almost a clichéd answer, but I loved everything about it from start to finish.

GTA. As a series, I won't pick it apart.

I'm not an Assassins Creed fan, but I'm really liking Black Flag ATM. Good story, graphically engaging, & a reasonably open world. Not quite GTA with pirates, but well worth a play through.

  • +1

Sorry to go old skool, but Civ II is the goods.
I still get it out a couple of times a year. Graphics are…adequate. AI is pretty good, and it strikes a good balance between being fun to play and giving micro level control.

    • +1 My all time favourite pc game by far. I won't stop playing until I finish it on deity.

Best console game would be one of the Super Mario Bros/64. Just not the second one.

  • +5

Day of the Tentcle, Unreal Tournament 2004 and War Craft 2 (<edit>three because they are so different).

DotT: Graphics that still stand today, interface and puzzles that strike the perfect balance between easy to play and interesting and brilliant script.

UT2K4: Simply the best multiplayer FPS. Every weapon is well balanced and has multiple uses. The engine is rock solid performs very well, ported almost everywhere and even has a software renderer. The team game modes (ASS, ONS). Includes almost all content from UT99 and UT2K3.

WC2: It didn't do anything that games before it didn't do. But it did it well. The graphics were brilliant for the time and hold up today. The engine ran very well and had (for the time) and nice interface (now defacto standard for RTS). The multiplayer was fun and impressively stable and playable (unlike C&C) and you could play with 3 people per CD (6 with game + expansion).

    Biggest Issues:

DotT: I can replay it many times for the script, but due to the nature of the game you can only really enjoy the puzzles once.

UT2K4: The demo sunk the game. The demo was so good and had so much content (to get people back after 2K3) that many people just played this online, then people with the full game would join the demo servers to play with others… and you couldn't get people into a proper game server. Also later UT3 just split the player base (nothing wrong with UT3, but it wasn't good enough to move people from 2K4).

WC2: Fixed difficulty an issue for some people. Slow at start. Multiplayer games just end up as all ogres/knights.

    • Yes thank you UT2K4 was bomb!, unfortunately I missed it at its peak and came in late in 07 when there were very little packed Australian servers

  • +1

Commander Keen because it was a fun adventure and the cheats meant I couldn't die.

    • cheats meant I couldn't die.

Doesn't take much to make it a favourite to you then.

  • +1

Haven't had much time gaming these days, but those that gave me fond memories are:

    • Ultima 6, 7 & Serpent Isle. Great open-world RPG back in the days, but how they ruined the franchise…
    • QuakeWorld & original Team Fortress. That's much of my uni days.
    • As much as I liked Quake and TF, I find it pretty hard to go back (particularly to TF). I picked UT2K3 because to play today it is just a better game (in my opinion).

    • Quakeworld is the father of modern online gaming.

  • +2

    World of Warcraft Series.

After playing for 5+ years and the sheer volume of pleasurable moments with friends I can't think of another game where I have invested months of game time.

I no longer play the series due to the time commitment required but I do reminisce on the many good times which were had.

  • +1

Metal gear solid on psx. hands down. Absolutely epic. The voice acting, cut scene, story and gameplay were well ahead of its time. I still get goosebumps hearing the theme song to this day.

  • Difficult decision, but if I could only pick two games, they'd have to be:

    1. Final Fantasy VIII (which I enjoyed more than VII)
    2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Although I should mention Master of Orion and Syndicate Wars as I spent a lot of time playing them back in the day.

    Good times.

    • +1

Wow very similar to mine. Although I would have to say my two favourites are:

      1. Final Fantasy VII
      2. Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • +1

    Pokemon Silver on Gameboy Colour
Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour on PC

Games were sure expensive back then, my first game on PS1 was Ape Escape, I recall it costing $50, now I can get far better games like Bioshock Infinite for $10 on Amazon sales lol…

  • Ok I have had this game in my head for years but I have no idea what it's called.
All I can remember is you start next to this tall castle/building that you can go up. There is also a cave in it with diamond like things on the walls and that's all I remember lol Ring a bell anyone?

    • Platform? Age? Graphics level? Platformer/First Person/Third Person?

      • Hmmm I think it was either super Nintendo or just Nintendo. That's as much as I can remember.

    • ICO?

    • Is it Zelda: A Link to the Past? It was a Super Nintendo game.

The game starts by you waking up in your Uncle's house hearing voices from the Princess. You then make your way to the Castle, find a secret underground entrance where you find your Uncle wounded. He hands you his sword and shield. You then free the Princess from the castle dungeons. To escape the castle, the Princess tells you of a secret exit located behind the throne which leads you through some sewers out to a sanctuary.

There were many caves in the game, especially around Death Mountain. The diamond like things were probably the switches.

      • Nah I had a look it isn't that game. I'm pretty sure it didn't have a birdseye view. This game has puzzled me for about 5 yrs :(

        • +1

          Was it 'Gods'?
Man I spent many hours on that game, fantastic for its time. I don't remember a cave, but it did have diamonds/gems..

        • Not castlevania?

  • +1

I can't choose 3 games but I can give you series.

In no particular order Metal Gear Solid, Monster Hunter and Uncharted.

  • +3

Battlefield Bad Company 2 - Greatest fps multiplayer game of all time. I still play it to this day even though bf3 and bf4 are out.

    • I'm not a huge fan of FPS's or multiplayer, but I did put 140 hours into Bad Company 2. Really enjoyed it, despite all the hit register issues. Can't get into Battlefield 4 at all.

    • Fantastic game :)

      • Played on Xbox 360 of course :)

    • I used to play this online multiplayer mode only and loved it.
Now it is taken over by BF3 and COD black ops and simple Love them as well.

    • F yeah. I put a thousand hours into BC 2. Just a brilliant game. I hate the unrealistic feel of BF 3 in ccomparison.

Definitely my favorite. I love the way bc2 always gave you a fighting chance. If a heli was chasing you, you could always snipe the pilot or knock it down with a CG.

So many people I know put hundreds of hours into that game. Best game of all time.

  • +4

Single player the best is probably Morrowind.

    • +1

Morrowind is by far one of the best games in my books. Although there were many bugs, the story was just too good to ignore. The level of freedom in the game is endless. There were plenty of bug fixes and many many many graphic mods updated as to the current year.

  • +1

Surprised it hasnt been mentioned yet but shadow of the colossus is mine. Every single fight is epic and replayability is in collecting upgrades.

    • Junglist from good game also considers it his favorite game.

  • Super Mario World.. When I was lucky enough to fly Singapore Airlines, i would always play it to try to complete as much of it as i could before i reached my destination. But now an ozbargainer, I fly budget airlines that don't give me this luxury :(

Other mentions would be Top Gear (SNES), Contra (Atari) and Duke Nukem II (PC).

    Nostalgia.

  • +1

Golden Eye, Perfect Dark and Zelda N64.
    You know why.

    • Ahhhhhh Perfect dark was so different and good! Wish Nintendo would port their old games to the Wii or Wii U

      • +1

Perfect Dark was Rare, not Nintendo. This is why the updated version is on XBox.

        • Yeah but it was on a Nintendo console wasn't it?

        • +1

Yes but Nintendo don't own the licence, they can't do anything with it.

        • I guess that's why we haven't seen goldeneye ported yet :)
Nintendo grow some balls and get these games back.

        • Nintendo grow some balls and get these games back.

Not going to happen, MS owns them now.

        • There was some speculation that Nintendo was going to buy them back for cheap now that they suck. KINECT SPAWTZ ADVENCHUR!

But there was also speculation that Nintendo was going to make Android games, so don't believe everything you read on the Internet.

        • They were going to release Golden Eye N64 on Xbox 360 like how they released Perfect Dark, with better graphics but I heard Nintendo stopped them as they own half the rights or something.

  • +2

Duke Nukem 3D. It's time to kick a** and chew bubblegum but I'm all out of gum. Nuff said.

Battle Toads & Double Dragon. Awesome teamups. Ahh the old days.

  • Hmmm, that's a tough one.

    • Mass Effect Trilogy. I just finished it for the third or fourth time last night, and it still ranks really highly on my 'best of' list. Not overly happy about the endings, but I'm not going to let those 20 minutes ruin the other ~100 hours for me.

    • Age of Empires II. 15 years old and I still enjoy playing it… 'nuff said.

    • Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I was in rabid anticipation for this game for over a year and it did not let me down one bit. It has it's problems, sure, but I still loved it.

Honourable mention would go to Halo: Combat Evolved, for being the first game I played religiously from start to finish and for spawning the rest of the franchise. Can't speak for the multiplayer on any of them, but I enjoyed practically every moment of the single player for many, many, many, hours. Also, the lesser-known RPG Sudeki.

  • League of Legends. Runescape. TF2. Based on number of hours played.

  • +1

Super Mario 64 because it was awesome

  • +3

Final Fantasy X - surprised this hasn't come up, beautiful story music graphics played it for abt 100hrs but can power through in abt 30. The Hd remake on PS3 is coming out shortly, however it sadly includes x-2.

Ocarina of Time was brilliant way ahead of its time. Never got to play majoras mask hoping there will be a 3ds remake.

And just to show my old age.. duck hunt on the NES - loved the dog!

Is it just me or is it harder to find games that still have that magic factor these days underneath all the fancy gfx? Final fantasy storylines are becoming bland and cliched, the recent Zelda retro remake on 3ds was overhyped and so so, and innovation seems to be a yearly instalment of COD or a sports franchise?

    • +2

      +1 for FFX
One of the best story lines, probably only second to FFVII, but the graphic and music really set it apart. Must admit, tears were shed in those two games.

Another one was Pokemon Blue and Gold. Back when Charizard was the most badass pokemon, before it became repetitive, and the pokemon didnt look ugly.

    • +1 for FFX as well

I ordered the HD remake in August, still waiting until March for the official Australian release :( fancy waiting around 8 months for a game that is essentially over a decade old, but that is how strongly the game tugged on my heartstrings all those years ago. Yuna and Tidus :)

  • Parasite Eve II back on the PS1 was the best single player game ever for me, nothing compares. And I would say Battlefield 2 for multiplayer, although BF: Bad Company 2 was awesome too.

  • +2

DotA and DotA 2, you can play DotA 2 for free, it's quite hard at first, you need to invest 100hrs minimum just to learn but from there on it's really fun

    • +2

Just to learn? With Dota, you are ALWAYS learning, no matter how many hours you play.

      • I've got 400 hours in it and I just figured out what Medusa does yesterday.

She like, turns people to stone and stuff, right?

        • She turns you into stone..rs…

        • Only turns to stone if you're facing her, so run away.. (bkb doesn't stop it)

      • I've clocked 900+ games on dota2 and at least that again back on dota and I can confirm for still learning.

        • I have 1700 games, some say I'm addicted, played plenty of DotA on Warcraft III before that too lol…

fastest way to learn is to random or play a handful with a hero then move to the next, the basics for each role do not change, the more heroes you learn the better you'll react when facing that hero or assisting that hero.

    • Definitely Dota 2. Stopped playing almost all other games, basically like crack. Alot of people don't like it because of the learning cliff but I guess I'm a bit of a masochist when it comes to my games.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.

I'll be the first to say that Ocarina, Link To The Past and Wind Waker were probably better games, but Link's Awakening was my personal favourite. Must have finished it over a dozen times on the Game Boy and spent hundreds of batteries on this game. Can still close my eyes and run through all the dungeons in my mind's eye.

The first game which I started to play seriously was Starcraft: Brood War. It also scratched my esports itch and I've been watching the OSL, MSL and Proleague for over a decade. I still play Starcraft 2 to this day, though not as seriously as my iccup days.

  • Deus Ex is my all time favourite.

  • +3

    Betrayal at Krondor.

    • Yes! Return to Krondor is my favourite game, can't even guess how many times I've played through that game

      • To be honest, I was not a fan of Return to Krondor, didn't have the same feel as Betrayal at Krondor, or Betrayal in Antara. The developers spent a lot of time on graphics but the game play was nowhere near as good as BAK. It kinda all feel apart with RTK as the series died with that last installment (can't remember if it was Sierra or the Krondor games that folded first).

        • I was a tiny bit too young for the earlier krondor games unfortunately, return to krondor is the first game I remember getting from a store in those huge boxes they used to come in, probably why I love it so much.

I just love the simplicity in it, attack with sword or use a spell, none of the complicated 18 different ways to attack someone like modern turn based rpgs

        • +1

Yep, the big boxes definitely felt like you were getting a lot for your money :)

    • +2

Wow, I'm a Feist fan and didn't know this even existed :O

      • You are missing out! Go play them! :)

  • +2

Silent Hill (PS1) Scared the hell out of me from start to finish. Good gameplay. Decent graphics.

Red Dead Redemption (PS3) Great graphics, great storyline, have spent hours exploring the vast maps.

    Metal Gear Solid (Series)

  • Maplestory Good times with primary school friends

  • +1

While I'm not a gamer these days, I'm going to stick my neck out here and put in a vote for the original Space Invaders, circa 1978.
It consumed immeasurreable hours in my misspent youth as the little buggers were so addictive.
I'll also throw in a PC adventure game called Twinsen (also known as LBA or Relentless), circa 1994.
My wife will tell you she hardly saw me till I'd defeated the evil Doctor Funfrock!
Really nice graphics (for it's time) and an engaging story line.
Still available for download over the internet.

    • +1

I loved Little Big Adventure -one of two games I have completed. The other game was a more recent love was Machinarium. Doom was pretty freaky and time consuming in its day.

    • I used to play Space Invaders in the family lounge area of a pub. One day I noticed some kids asked their mother for all her 2 cent pieces. They dropped one in and banged the coin slot as it fell - and the machine accepted the 2 cent coin as a credit! It was nearly as much fun getting 10 games out of 20 cents (and teaching other kids how to do the same) than it was playing the game. LOL. They must've wondered why the coin box was nearly exclusively full of 2 cent pieces.

      • We used to stay in a ski lodge in Thredbo and they had a table style machine there. We used to get the electric zap stick thing used to light the gas stove, push it against the metal coin slot and zappppp - free credits

  • Marathon trilogy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon_Trilogy], and Q3A …

  • +1

    pokemon red

  • +1

Besides sentimental favourites (Mario Kart, Pokemon, Ratchet and Clank etc.)…

LA Noire. Not perfect but I loved it. Bought all the DLC and desperately tried to find things to do after the game had finished which I never do. Favourite game of last gen by a long margin

  • +1

    Hmmm ok:

    Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising
One of the most unique games I've ever played - with voice over from Colin Baker (a very old Doctor Who).

    Battlezone II
An RTS/FPS that had its share of bugs, but tried to do something that no one had ever tried before. I would love for someone to make another one one day…

    Red Alert 2: Yuris Revenge
Played this RTS alot before the hax started to creep into the game. Last C&C done by Westwood - the true creators behind C&C before EA F__ked it all up.

    C&C Renegade
FPS C&C game that took 2/3 years of my life. I would give more if I could - still dream of that 'boink' sound lol.

  • Carnivores.
    Worms world party.
    Worms Armageddon.
    Giants :citizen kabuto.
    Unreal tournament 3.

    Dat nostalgia.

    • Lol I so remember playing worms back in the day and how cool was that game! Throwing bananas at people lol so much fun.

    • Ohhhh…I'd forgotten all about Worms!

  • +3

I must be showing my age. In terms of hours spent playing, UFO: Enemy Unknown wins hands down. I think I spent 5000 hours playing that game in my childhood. And even now I'll happily play a game - each game is 30 hours of playtime easily.

  • +1

Some brilliant games already mentioned (ICO/Shadow of the Colossus, Little Big Adventure, Day of the Tentacle, Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64). Thought I'd pipe in with a few more not mentioned.

    • Psychonauts - Best Level Design. Ever! Plus, the trademark Schafer dialog and characterisations. Truly brilliant. If you're quick, you can pick it up cheap at the Humble Weekly Sale. Only 5 hours to go!

    • Batman Arkham Asylum / City - Easily one of the best superhero games out there. Perfect mix of fighting/stealth action.

    • Super Meat Boy - Insane platforming, yet amazingly achievable. Eventually.

    • Rayman Origins - More platforming goodness. And goodness, it's good! I still hum some of the tunes to this game.

    • Another World.

      Shouldn't forget that.

  • +2

Does anyone remember the Aladin snes game? That was a kool game

    • I paid 123 dollars for that game on release. I felt pretty ripped off.

  • +1

Shogun Total War, one of the first strategy game of its kind. and Castlevenia and contra also are very good

  • +1

Oldies: Ski32.exe, Theme hospital, The sims
    More recently: GTA, CS

Though since few years ago I've stopped playing games completely… :P
