Balanescu Quartet: A haunting blend of live music, striking visuals & the voice of Romania's soul.
The Balanescu Quartet is one of the world's leading contemporary string quartets. In March, the Quartet performs Maria T, a poetic celebration of the spirit of Romanian folklore and the Queen of Romanian song, Maria Tănase.
Featuring stunning visuals of Tănase and archival footage of a cosmopolitan 1930s Romania, interwoven with compositions by the Quartet's founder and visionary violinist Alexander Balanescu and the haunting voice of Maria T herself, The Guardian (UK) describes Maria T as 'a delicate mix of nostalgia, lyricism and fantasy'.
The Balanescu Quartet ventures beyond the traditional string quartet to create a new sound world where contemporary classical, pop, jazz, folk and electronica can share a common chord. It is their innovative approach to music that has seen them collaborate diverse artists including Philip Glass, Kraftwerk and Kate Bush.
‘The emotional impact is inescapable’ – The Guardian (UK)
