I'm amazed that Apple approved this app!

I don't think it blocks ads right across IOS apps (I don't think any app can), I think it's just a web browser with ad blocking built in, and there's a ton of those in the app store.

That doesn't make it a bad deal - if it doesn't download ad banners etc, then you don't have to pay for the data for those downloads - but it's not quite as awesome as it seems.

      • "Here are some situations in which Weblock might come in handy:
        • block annoying ads (text ads, banners and popups) in almost every app you use! (it works with YouTube, Pandora and many, many more…). It's not limited just to web browsing like in other ad blocking apps.
        • disable majority of ads on websites you visit on your iOS device! It doesn't matter which browser app you use! Weblock works with Safari, Chrome and other browsers (currently not supported: Puffin Browser).
        • easily remove all facebook widgets and plugins (like buttons, comments, etc.) on sites you visit - simply disable facebook plugins in Weblock! Do the same thing for Twitter, Google+ and many others.
        • take control of the way your friends or family use their iOS - you can configure any device to use your Weblock account and disable/enable any content, any time, directly from your own device.
        • if you wish to block something else, you can create your own rules and filters. You can block any URL (with regular expressions), domain or IP address. Don't know how? Let us know - we're here for you."

      • It's not a web browser. It uses a proxy automatic configuration script to block ads.

  • me too if it works…………

  • only work in WIFI. does not support mobile data :(

  • +3

It only works for wifi because it acts a wifi proxy and you cant edit proxy settings for mobile data.

This will block ads in all apps and system wide as it acts as a proxy.

Not allot but it helps if you are not jailbroken & not have adblocker installed.

    ಠ‿ಠ

  • Get it, try it, find it doesnt work all that well, and dump it. I paid for it ages ago, it never did block the ads I wanted blocked so pouf gone.

  • Can it block ads in Flappy Bird???

    • +2

Can it block FlappyBird itself? That game is so annoying…

      • +1

FlappyBird is actually going to close, the developer is shutting it down

  • Really great idea!

Works perfect once you set it up correctly (note: installing the app is not enough to start blocking ads, you need to configure it using the instructions provided). I was almost going to buy the Mercury browser just so I wouldn't have to look at anymore ads in Safari

    • Mercury browser is good, but doesn't block all ads.

A lot better than safari though!

  • Needed this, thanks.

  • Certainly an interesting solution to blocking ad content on the web system-wide. But since it works by way of a proxy with a unique URL for each user, there are certainly privacy concerns, no?

All of your traffic is being diverted through the proxy, where the ad filtering happens. Should I be wary of that risk?

EDIT: Oh yeah, the fact that it only works via Wi-Fi restricts its utility quite considerably.

  • This has me a little worried:

Keep in mind that Weblock proxies all your traffic through their servers. 2 problems with it: 1) It makes your browsing slower due to extra hops 2) It makes your browsing less secure because Weblock sees everything your do.

    • I don't believe that's correct. From my reading, it only proxies traffic on the blocklist.

      http://www.weblockapp.com/faq/#question-4

And what it actually does is try to proxy it through an invalid service (it's currently actually Google's DNS service) so it is rejected immediately.
So in effect, when your phone sends a web request for ads, it goes nowhere hence it is blocked.

      http://www.weblockapp.com/faq/#question-6

That said, it's Wifi only which limits its use somewhat.

  • Awesome! Seems to work once you set it up. Will have to see if speed is impacted, if at all. Blocking intrusive ads was one of the main reasons I wanted to jailbreak.

  • How does it work on Facebook and Twitter. What options do I have to select to block sponsored ads and recommended pages wedget.

  • OpenDNS does similar job… and it works at a router level rather than device level … This app may be useful if you want to block your kid from watching too much youtube but still want he/she to use normal internet.

  • It's expired now.

  • Is this App like George Maharis' "Fakeblock"?

  • And now the price is still $1.99?
