        This is free range

how do you know? where is the certification? just because it says on the packet its "free range" does not mean ANYTHING in australia because there is no legal definition.

        • +2

So you think it is not free range?

        • +1

So you think it is not free range?

wow, you got that from what i said? thats simply amazing. im not sure anyone has ever put words in my mouth so totally opposite to what i actually think. congratulations…

just because it says on the packet its "free range" does not mean ANYTHING in australia because there is no legal definition.

          http://www.makeitpossible.com/guides/egg-labels.php

With no consistent or legally enforceable definitions for egg production systems in Australia, it's not easy to understand what the various logos and terms on packaging mean.

tl;dr you cant tell from what ad caus theres no certification as to there claim of "free range"

        • Dial it back there a bit Nosdan

        • it's more like free rein right now.

        • +1

I think the odds of an egg labelled "free range" coming from a free range hen are far higher than the odds of a non-labelled egg coming from one though…

If you ACTUALLY cared, and weren't just trying to justify buying the cheaper ones, you would buy free range regardless (unless you knew that it was falsely labelled of course).

        • +2

If you ACTUALLY cared, you would buy certified free range regardless

          fixed that up for you

      easternculture

I promised myself I wouldn't respond to you again, but you just love screwing with my deals don't you easternculture. I hope everyone is now seeing you for what you are. YOU ARE FULL OF SHIT! Show me a link to your 30 eggs for $5.50 at Woolworths. Cheapest I can find is $4.70 for a dozen free range. Mod: Removed Personal Attack

      • This is very confusing, do you want him to reply and show you or FO and leave you alone? Not really possible to do both.

        • +4

I don't want anything from him. I've already reported him to the mods, and I was told he'd leave me alone. Still hasn't happened. He posts comments that put people off deals, and he modifies my posts to add his touch. I don't need him, and I don't appreciate his interference. And what's more, he's a blatant liar! Buys 30 eggs everyday from Woolworths for $5.50… ye right.

        • -4

I've already reported him to the mods, and I was told he'd leave me alone

If you cant tolerate deal discussions, this website is not for you

Obviously their are better deals than this out there, and my obligation as "Ozbargainer of the Year" is to direct people to better deals if they are out their

        • +5

I've already reported him to the mods

Not sure what your problem is, unless his post has been edited, he's just putting forward his opinion about this deal.

That's the whole point of having discussions, it's not just for brown nosing…

I don't see him making any personal attack on you, but you are definitely making personal remarks back…

Not everybody has the same opinion about each deal…

He posts comments that put people off deals

Even if it does, why do you care? Are you a shareholder in this company?

    • Gees, I wish my Woolies/Coles or anywhere else near me did that.

  • +4

    Hey tightarse.

Just out of curiosity how do you find all these deals? Google free and cheap every 5 minutes?

Yes, we are related so you can let me know at Easter when the family catches up.

    • +5

Just give me a few minutes to cool down from my rant at easternculture.

TightBottom, meet tightarse… is there a user called tightbum, too? :)

        • +1

          There was a 'new tightarse'…

Don't know what happened to that user though. Just vanished.

        • Just vanished.

Into the Ring of Fire !

        • +3

Wow, 2 hours later and still no clown has created an account named tightbum to reply to this. The Internet has left me shocked….

  • +11

Love these personal battles between members on Ozbargain.

    • I've has a pretty ordinary day at work, but I'm sipping a drink on a tram loving this too right now :D

  • +10

Maybe easternculture isn't being serious. Maybe it's just a yolk.

ANyway, I love all tightarse's deals. I've even printed them all out and put them in an albumin.

    • +4

I've even printed them all out and put them in an albumin.

      No way! You haven't…

  • +3

It's a good price for thirty eggs.

Nosdan is right though, with no legal definition of what 'free range' is I don't think that 'free range' should be in the title for this bargain.

    • Nosdan is right though, with no legal definition of what 'free range' is I don't think that 'free range' should be in the title for this bargain.

unless of course, as i originally asked (and got negged for) someone can post up a certification of some sort from reputable certification mob (rspca and the likes) that in this case these really are anything more than simply mislabeled

      • +3

If there is no legal definition, then there should be no problem to put the 'free range' term as indicated by the producer.

        • wow…. again just wow…. you really are a super human being arent you?

so your not only ok with paying extra for eggs raised in cages because they have a word that means nothing on the package…. your also happy to take away a livelihood from anyone who actually cares about animal welfare because there "real" free range eggs can no longer compete because even tho it costs a lot more to produce actual "real" (certified etc) free range eggs/chickens your ok with any dodgy person to come along and claim to be looking after there animals when in fact they are doing the opposite?

        • +1

Mate. You are losing it. You are contradicting yourself and going off topic

        • Picture that sham wow face though

    • +1

      Nosdan is dan right.
Thats why I pos'ed him. (inline with sites guidelines of course)

As he said, or alluded to, anyone can claim "my eggs are free range".
You need to look for the stamp. (well a stamp is a start)

My local IGA has (cough) free range eggs. No stamp though. I wont buy them

      Now, here I go.
At the Frankston price, I doubt they are free range (unless sourced from locals and minimum markup/profit).

How can you prove or disprove it?
Thats why we all need certification.

  • +1

Where does it say they are medium sized ?

    • +9

I called them today before I posted. Always do my homework, and try to confirm details.

      • Thanks… By medium, do you mean 60g ?

        • He told me each tray weighs around 1300g.

        • +4

          1300g / 30 = 43g each on average.

These eggs are either tiny or they are quail eggs. I think you need to update the title

        • +4

Either that or some are blanks.

        • You forgot to deduct the weight of the tray itself

        • Thanks, I'll change the title. He told me they're medium, and the weight is 1300g. So that's what I posted. I've never weighed an egg in my life. Just took his word for it.

This link seems to support the theory of 43g for medium though… egg sizes

        • +2

Actually they could be medium sized.

According to the first post of Eastern culture, the tray of 30 large eggs weighed 1.5 kg I.e. 50 gms per egg.

OTOH, Aldi sells a dozen large eggs which weigh 700 gm. Roughly 60 gms per egg.

        • $5 is probably a good price, but if the eggs are too small, it stuffs up a lot of recipes that are based on 55/60g eggs…

        • Actually they could be medium sized.

          800g / 12 = 67g X-Large
          700g / 12 = 58g Large
          600g / 12 = 50g Medium

Anything smaller than 50g is small. These are 43g

        • Cool.could be a case of egg producers shifting the goal posts.

        • Anything smaller than 50g is small. These are 43g

          But not according to this

        • The link you posted also says they are small, as they are not more than 43g. ;)

        • +3

Sunny Queen Eggs, one of the "big 3" egg producers in Australia, has the following size classifications (http://www.sunnyqueen.com.au/recipe/egg-basics/egg-size-guid…):

          Medium: 42 - 49.9 grams
          Large: 50 - 58.9 grams
          Extra Large: 59 - 66.9 grams
          Jumbo: 67 - 71.9 grams
          Extra Jumbo: 72 - 78 gram

By comparison, egg sizes in the UK (http://www.egginfo.co.uk/egg-sizes):

          Small: 53g + under
          Medium: 53 - 63g
          Large: 63 - 73g
          Very Large 73g +over

Which leads to the ridiculous situation where a "large" egg (e.g. 52g) in Australia would be classified as "small" in the UK! :)

  • We get a raw deal on eggs in WA. Acccording to Woolies website, a carton of 700g homebrand caged eggs is $3.44 in QLD and NSW, yet the same product is $4.09 in Perth.

Surely they aren't shipping eggs across the nullarbor and tacking on extra for shipping costs? We have quite a few big egg farms here…

I usually buy local caged eggs at the market for about $2.79-$3.29 a doz (700g) but both Coles and Woolies are a rort.

    • A raw deal. I like what you did there! My brain was starting to get scrambled
