Travel insurance for Schengen visa application

Hi all,

My partner needs to apply for a Schengen visa. The requirement is a medical insurance to cover a minimum of EUR 30,000.00.

Is there an insurance provider similar to car insurances where I get the policy confirmation and have a cooling off period?
Preferably without instant payment necessary (Pay at post office option?)

  • Over the last 7-8yrs I have travelled to France, Greece, Germany and Italy on an Australian passport and you do not need a visa to enter these countries for holidays. I think you are being taken for a ride if someone is trying to sell you a visa.

  • +1

My partner is not Australian. She needs to apply for a Schengen visa.
Not only Australians on Ozbargain and in Australia ;-)

Requirement for the Schengen Visa is to show a travel insurance…

That would have been handy to know up front as obviously that does make a difference.

      • "My partner needs to apply for a Schengen visa."

The question was not if she needs one…

  • all australian insurance policies have a cooling off period :)

    but most require prepayment :(

unless you have a credit card that gives it free :)

  • Just enter via England to France :p they don't stamp you, your 180 days never "started"

    • That's a good one. Seriously they don't stamp you in?

  • Neph is right, they SOMETIMES dont stamp you going into france, but you cant rely on this. I strongly advise against taking the risk. Even at the airports, often the french just give your passport a cursory glance. As an australian passport holder, there is really no downside to lobbing up without a schengen visa, because we are allowed 90 days.
The OP hasnt stated what passport their partner is traveling on, but assuming that they dont automatically get a 90 day visa then the situation is clearly different.
Is the need for a schengen visa related to the passport?
Are you applying for a longstay or cultural visa?
Are you staying just within the schengen zone?
Are you going to the UK?

The border between the UK and france is one of the most tightly regulated BY THE ENGLISH as i stated before the french dont really care. But if you go from schengen region to the UK you will meet tight security, much questioning etc. They especially want to see a return flight out of europe, and if you have no right to be in the schengen zone because of your passport, then you wont even be admitted to the UK.

if the op can give more info then it would help.

  • Thanks for all your replies!

I am well aware of the regulations. My question was only regarding an Australian travel insurance with minimum EUR 30,000.00 medical cover. I would have preferred a policy which does not require instant payment, then apply for the visa first.

We are not going to the UK which is a non Schengen country. My partner is an Australian permanent resident, but no citizen, non EU passport holder and therefore requires a Schengen visa.

  • Depending on your credit card, you may have this cover built in.

  • I'm also an Australian permanent resident who's looking to apply for a Schengen Visa.

Not all complimentary credit card travel insurance covers repatriation which I believe is important when you're applying for Schengen visa. I got a westpac platinum card, and it doesn't cover repatriation.

I've inquired at Icover, they have a repatriation clause. But of course, it would be better if we could compare it with other insurance providers as well.

Just to second Franconian's query, i'd appreciate any suggestions for travel insurance that meet the requirement of Schengen Visa.

    Thanks.
