FYI, if you're handy with a soldering iron, modchips for region-free playback of Blu-rays are about $55.

Maybe it's time for me to replace my ancient Panasonic…

    • thanks for the link

    • I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you're an electrician. You could fry out the electronics if you don't know what you're doing. Plus you'd also void the warranty with user modification tampering.

Or you could just get a non-sony brand and use a keycode from your remote control….

      • Not for Blu-ray you can't. Keycodes generally only work for region free playback of DVD.

Australian Sonys are usually region free for DVD out of the box.

Good price, but shame it doesn't have built-in wifi. For those who want wifi more than 3D, the BDP-S3100 is $99 at JB Hifi.

  • I was tempted to buy this a couple of weeks ago. It's been at this price for a while (at least 3 weeks). The only thing that put me off was the inability to make it region free easily (mod chipping excluded).

I have noticed that DSE has dropped their price for the philips BDP 2180 3D bluray player ==> $99 ($20 off)

This can apparently be made region free by pressing a few buttons

FYI… if you are after a bluray player with wifi features, then the BDP 2180 is not for you. It has ethernet though..

    • That remote code is for region free playback of DVDs, not Blu-Ray.
