Live Connected forcing plan changes - double the price for less!

UPDATE:
~~
YOU MUST LEAVE LIVE CONNECTED TODAY! THEY REQUIRE 30 DAYS NOTICE TO CANCEL PLANS (and only gave us 29 days) SO SEND AN E-MAIL TODAY ASKING TO CANCEL YOUR PLAN IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO NEGOTIATE A NEW DEAL.

UPDATE 2:
SOME PEOPLE ARE REPORTING IF YOU PORT OVER TO A NEW SERVICE YOU WON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE TERMINATION RULES ANYWAY. THE LADY ON THE PHONE TOLD ME TO SEND AN E-MAIL (SO I DID) AND RING BACK ON THE 27TH OR SO. EITHER WAY I'LL BE PORTING OVER AROUND THAT DAY.
~~

UPDATE 3: I'M CONFUSED. SOME PEOPLE SAY THEY CHARGE YOU IF YOU CANCEL AND YOU LOSE YOUR NUMBER SO IT'S BETTER JUST TO PORT OVER BEFORE MARCH 1 WITH ANY PROVIDER?

I'M ALSO HEARING MIXED REPORTS AS TO WHETHER SOME OF US LEFT A REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT. THE LADY ON THE PHONE SAID I DIDN'T.

From Live Connected/Vaya:

Your Vaya mobile service for ####,###,### has now been connected to us for almost 2 years! I know, time flies! The good news is that we've loved having you on board and hope we've really saved you on your mobile bills each month since being with us. Unfortunately however, we cannot continue to offer you the same mobile service plan that we offered you to date. Don't panic, our new mobile plans are still the best on the market! Your plan, Tribe 11 (Series 1), will change to the Rapid 23 - Loyalty on the 1st March 2014.

You'll see your new plan, Rapid 23 - Loyalty on our website, except for one difference, you get the plan advertised on our site for $1 cheaper per month than new customers!

Are there any cheaper alternatives out there that might not be as good, but closer to $11 than $19+?

Note that I would get 1.2 GB less data with the $19 plan as well as less probably everything. Sucks for the Today Tonight "Aussie battlas".

Yeah, complete bunch of twats. Seriously. The funny thing is this comes RIGHT after a massive price hike. Less than a month ago the Rapid M plan cost $19.90 and included 1.5GB data.

It's not a coincidence. Purposely waiting until the hike to nail people. I have been on the same plan for over 2 years, so it's definitely not "almost 2 years". Muppets.

Probably going to lodge a TIO case for unethical and misleading practices unless they respond to my support ticket to my satisfaction.

    • +1

Let us know how it goes.

  • +3

Lots of people must be in the same boat looking to move, any suggestions?

    • +1

All I can find that is comparable is the Vaya Power Plan 18 (V2)(unlimited standard sms, $650 talk/text, 1.5gb data)

The real kicker is that Vaya OWN LiveConnected. Might not even go with Vaya out of spite.

      • +3

On the WP forums, they [vaya] mentioned price hikes will be coming soon to Vaya as well.

I wouldn't jump ship to Vaya. You'll see the same jacked up prices coming in soooooon…

Also Vaya bills data per MB not KB which is worse.

    • I've been with them for almost 5yrs, yet the email mentioned only 'almost 2yrs', blasphemy!

I am on the $7.99/month plan, with 200mb data. Would be utterly pointless to get 300mb for their 'suggested', rather forceful plan change of $19/month - with a meagre $1 discount for being an 'almost 2yr' loyal customer.

Will port my number to aldi mobile now.

  • +5

I got the same email but i have 6 phone number on the same bill but it only refers to one. I was on the 5 dollar plan. Now they want to charge $19 for what i was can get for $5. WTH 300% increase

    • Oh no, my dad is on a old $5 plan, with $100 of calls and thats about it. I hope he doesnt need to find a new plan, there's not a lot of options out there sadly.

      • +3

time to change to Yatango 6 dollar plan for 100 min?

        • +1

Thanks heaps! I'm moving dad over to them. Screw LC

        • Also looking to replace mum's old $5 plan. Bit worried about Yatango, having bad reviews.

Any thoughts about $10 Telechoice or $15 aldi prepaid?

        • I can vouch for Yatango. I have been with them for half a year now and have had not a single fault/problem/complaint with calls.

That said… the 3G is super dodgy for me.

However, it sounds like she didn't have 3G beforehand anyway though, so I would seriously consider Yatango if I was in your position :)

EDIT: Yatango has 1 month free anyway, so you can't lose much. Also I have no association with Yatango, just a relatively satisifed customer :D

        • I can vouch for Aldi. Excellent coverage, fast data speeds, cheap prices, long validity.

    • Their costs have increased…
Just look at the shocking offers from the competition!
Having said that, it looks like they're trying to kill off Live Connected and move people over to Vaya which offers far more for less (than the new Live Connected plans).

  • +2

I got the same email. They are pushing me from Pioneer Medium (Series 3) (R) to the Rapid 23 - Loyalty

So $10.90 to $22 per month, with data going from 1GB to 500MB.

Please let me know what other providers you are considering, because I will be leaving LC before the change takes effect.

Are they trying to kill off LC and make us move to Vaya directly? Vaya has the Power Plan 18 (V2) that is $18/month for 1.5GB

    • Are they trying to kill off LC and make us move to Vaya directly?

That was my thought as well as there's such a discrepancy in value between what LC offer and what Vaya offer. Particularly of concern is that they are the same company!

      • They are most likely hoping you just accept the new plan without switching. I bet a heap of people just do nothing.

      • And the fact that you have to port to vaya and pay another $20 sim fee

    • +2

      Looks like it to me..
I haven't got the message yet, but I've only been with them for 15 months… Not looking forward to getting the message though… Surely can't be too far away, cause I'm only paying $11.99/month for 1.5Gb

      • I'm also on the $11.95 - $500/1.5GB plan.

No email yet but a am sure it will come. :(

  • I got the same email as well. Looking at whistleout.com.au there doesn't seem to be a better value plan than Vaya's Power Plan 18 compared to the Tribe 11 http://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/SearchResults?t=9d…

  • I got the email as well.

Is Vaya's 18 dollar plan any good? In terms of data usage cause I know they round by mb and coming from LC which did kb I'm worried how they will time the sessions etc and since twitter/fb etc will all start to count.

Any one care to offer experiences?
I only ever use 500mb out of 1.5gb but now including social and mb billing I'm afraid it might start reaching close to that 1.5gb limit.

    • I am curently on the 18 month plan at the moment and it has been great, you'll get sms when you reach a certain amount of data to keep you from going over. Unless you upload or watch videos frequently you should be fine. However reading about the likelyhood of it happening to us Vaya members is also getting me worried.

      • Pretty sure those SMS are legally required these days. at 50%,80% and 100% (or similar)
It's not a LC thing specifically.

  • +4

Just got this too. So very much less for more.
Bastards! So much for customer loyalty.
Screw them. I will be moving on.

  • +1

Hopefully it's easy to switch to Vaya and we don't have to pay for a new SIM… I've emailed them to ask for the easiest way to switch.

    • That's interesting. They even called my plan a Vaya plan in the e-mail so it'll be interesting if they reject a free switch over. I'm already bordering on angry. The fact that they say we'll still have the cheapest rates is an outright lie if you're forced into LiveConnected's, as opposed to Vaya's new pricing plans, so what they're doing is misleading and bastard-like in so many ways.

I understand what they're doing considering they're the same company but I'm sure the way they've handled it would look to be anti-competitive in a legal sense. The problem is that they don't at least pretend to be different companies, forcing you into the more expensive option by default. Since the $23 plan is still worse than the $10.99 Tribe Plan why not re-configure us automatically into the $18 plan? And are they even allowed to automatically switch us over?

      • +3

Yeah, I found it weird that they called my plan a Vaya plan as well so obviously the LC and Vaya plans are one and the same if their database can't even differentiate who originally came from LC. Will post their reply which I suspect may take a while as they're probably getting swamped with unsatisfied customers.

        • +2

Everyone should make a TIO complaint about this. Absolutely poor form by VAYA/BEN/LiveConnected

        • Sorry, was going to vote +. Bad click :(

  • +3

Wow.. thats stiff. I pray TPG doesnt go the same way - I'm still riding high on their $14.99 1.5gb + $550 plan with some international calls included.

    • I remember reading speculation (after they rationalised all their plan options) that TPG are likely to exit from mobile services altogether.
Might be an idea to consider your options - just in case…

      • +2

Why, they just bought a bunch of new spectrum for 4G ? Very much doubt they'd go data only.

        • +1

googlefart is correct, TPG bought 4G spectrum in the recent Digital Dividend (moving Analogue TV to Digital) spectrum auction.
As such, it's highly unlikely they'll be exiting from the mobile space.. They might possibly not renew their Optus reselling contract though…

    • Me too on the same plan. No complains.

    • +1

I have three phones on this plan and am keeping my fingers crossed!

    • I am on this plan.

    • I believe TPG WILL go down this path, and here's my prediction as to when this could happen, so be prepared, it's likely they will screw us over with just weeks to cut-off date, just like pennytel recently with their data plans ($25 for 14gb/month to $99!)

Back in November 2013 (rough guess) I spoke to a work mate, suggesting he join up with TPG as well, only $10/month, he couldn't believe how cheap it was and said he'll check out the plan when he gets home. Comes back to me the next day saying he couldn't find the plan, I immediately suspected that TPG was closing down all their cheap plans and making one $20/month plan with a quarter of the data allowance only (previously given to the $18/month plan). So my rough guess is that if TPG shut down all their cheap plans around September-October 2013, then with a 24mths contracts, the last contract will finish up September-october 2015, or sooner.

      • 1) Pennytel went bankrupt and was bought out by MyNetFone
        2) Optus have hiked their reselling contract prices, cause there's no competition in the space now that Voda have stopped all reselling and Telstra are killing off their resellers. (TPG currently resell Optus)
        3) All networks are going/have been through a phase of reducing data allowance and keeping or increasing access prices. (although Voda appear to now be going back to offering decent data allowance, albeit at a "high" price, if the TV ad I saw last night, 2gb on $35 plan is indicative)

  • +2

I wonder why they even bought Live Connected??
With such a shockingly bad transition offer, I guess they will lose in order of 50% of their customers immediately. Live Connected customers are very price sensitive. More over the next few months as people fall foul of various penalties as they are used to receiving much more data and call time.
    Stupid move.

    • +1

well, monopoly is the name of the game, now there are no competition anymore, why not just increase the price of service?

      • People may port out to the Vodafone 4G offer or even Boost.

  • +7

I just got my email too. Previously on $10.99 plan so their new $23 plan that they've graciously automatically put me on is a relative 400% price hike (twice the price and half the data + other down sides) And to finish it off they wrap it up in a cheery email that makes it sound like they're doing you a favour. That's just plain rude and they can die in a fire.
I guess I'll switch to the Vaya 18 plan too.
Interestingly I signed my wife up to live connected a few months ago and she's on the exact equivalent of the vaya 18 plan for $11.99. She hasn't received such an email so I wonder how long they'll allow her to continue on that plan ?

I dont get how the vaya / liveconnected distinction works. You get a liveconnected branded email with their logo and links to their website, but the body of the text references "your vaya mobile service" and then says
"copyright vaya 2014" and the bottom and lists the vaya mailing address for contact.

It's like someone at vaya has said "yo, can I buy the old liveconnected client database, sting them with a huge price rise and keep the cash from the suckers that don't notice?"

  • +2

Have been pretty happy with my $10.99 plan over the past years. (Sigh) Well it was good while it lasted.

  • +2
  • +3

Move to vaya? Then what? Wait for them to do the same thing? For those unaware, vaya bought out lc a while ago.

Screw that, I'm going with someone else. Maybe telechoice or tpg.

    • At least if you take a 24 month contract with Vaya they shouldn't be able to screw you over until it expires. So at least 2 years of reasonable value?

      • +1

I'd say those 2 years with Vaya IS the screwing.

After Vaya bought LC out I've noticed that their support has reduced tenfold. They've billed me incorrectly twice and somehow even wrongly assumed I wanted to change out of the $10.99 plan.

    • nah TPG is just as bad now if your a new customer looking for value if your an existing customer its still good.

  • I'm sure this was always the plan from the beginning of Live Connected. Start off by offering near cost or slightly under cost (depending on the pockets of the investors) and as you build up an enormous clientele, slowly ramp up the prices so they are just under the major offerings.

It was clever and it will continue to work. A lot of the tight customers they signed up a couple of years ago may have moved up in their jobs or got a job and suddenly they can pay the increased cost. They may not like it, but what choice do they really have? It was clever and they have built a thriving and no doubt profitable business out of it.

    • Great theory apart from the fact that LC were bought out by Vaya last year…
And All Mobile providers have cut data/calls and/or increased cost in the past 12-18 months.

  • I am on 10.99 plan. In DEC, when they announced the price hike on other plans I wanted to move to $19 plan which is $29 now. I was assured by email that I can continue on current plan as long as I am with LC.
After a month they are changing the story.

I have just contacted VAYA. Their $18 plan seems ok. We have to pay $20 for SIM but they have first month free offer extended to the end of FEB

  • +1

The rep for vaya said on whirlpool that the $18 plan isn't likely going to stay around long.

    • Damn, really? I just signed up off-contract for that plan. I guess I should sign up for 24 months to ensure I still get this plan? I think Ben said he'd be surprised if the $18 plan lasted till March.

  • I've also gotten the email. And I've definitely been with them for greater than 2 years. It was good while it lasted.

Now also looking into the Vaya $18 or the TC $20 or $25. Currently leaning more towards the TC plans as the optus coverage in my area isn't the best.

  • +14

    Guys!
    Its Vaya doing the shafting.
Please look elsewhere for your new deal.
    Don't reward shonky behavior.

    • +4

      Spot on!
It was great while it lasted, but I'll be voting with my feet too! ;)

      • +1

Ditto. I'm looking into Amaysim and Telechoice. If you have any other suggestions let us know.

        • +1

Those are pretty much the two main options I'm looking at as well…

  • +2

Sigh got the email as well, was on the Discovery 11 (Series 1, $10.99). Vaya seems viable but being LC's parent company i don't really trust it now. Note also Vaya seems to charge data in MB increments, which will burn the data allowance a bit.

Next best thing the telechoice global liberty 24 months ($20)?

  • +2

All good things must come to an end sure, but this is quite a crash and burn (way too abrupt a price hike for me).

  • +4

Also interesting that they're happy to shift you from your current plan to a more expensive plan now, but when you try to do it yourself they actually claim that the network prevents them from shifting you to a higher cost plan!

Also for those wondering how long the new rates will last, they guarantee you'll keep your rate for a minimum of 2yrs, even if you choose month-to-month.

  • +3

Hey guys, not much better than Vaya but it looks like "TeleChoice" offers similar plans to Vaya if not better. Also Amaysim is good for people who use no credit. So I'm probably taking my business away from Vaya. I'm not at all happy about how they've been treating us.

    Anyone know much about Telechoice?

FYI: Was on the $7.99 and now they're taking it up to $19.

  • Does anyone remember if LC took a security deposit when I signed up on a post paid plan? I'm leaving, and I always forget to ask for these deposits back, I remember tpg was a pain in the rear to get the money back.

    • No, I don't recall either. But it was probably non-refundable because I remember thinking I had to make the deposit worth it or something.

I think they also have a 30 days of notice policy before cancellation, at least nowadays, which is kinda hard when you only give us 29 days notice via e-mail :) They won't win that fight or my name isn't…

    • +3

Does anyone remember if LC took a security deposit when I signed up on a post paid plan?

Yes I remember it fondly, it was one of those hot nights where you just wish it would rain. You were on your computer looking through redtube. With people in the next room you thought it would be great if you could surf redtube in your own room on your mobile. After about an hour or so of research you decided to pull the trigger on a live connected plan. You were so happy with your choice you forgot to read 10.9 of the terms and conditions (http://www.liveconnected.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/T…). But as it turns out, it didn't apply to the plan you chose, so happy days.

      • I just rang Vaya/Live Connected and they said the $20 was for the SIM card. It's so hard to read terms and conditions when no details of a particular plan are given. I wonder if I received an e-mailed contract somewhere…

        • Nope.
The original members paid a refundable deposit AND a SIM fee, although the SIM fee was waived with some join up specials.

        • I never delete old emails, thankfully. Looking through some of them, I connected in November 2010, seems like I paid my monthly plus a $20 fee/charge (invoice isn't clear). So I don't know if I paid a refundable security deposit. But I did realize I used some coupon code, which seems to gave my dad about $30 in credit, which on his $7 plan, gave a good 3 months of free service lol, before I changed to a $5 plan. Ah the good ol' days.

But still, not sure if I am entitled to a deposit refund.

  • So if we sign up for the 24 month plan with Vaya, they won't be able to change anything regarding the plans for 2 years? LC reduced my data allowance from 1.5GB to 1GB and also took away the free social. I never really looked into it though because 1GB was still okay.

  • +1

Well all provider wilp increase the price in very near future. As telstra spending 1.2bn every year upgrading their network optus and voda has to increase their spending or risk getting obsolete. If you had not notice the speed of mobile internet increase in the past year or so due to the heavy investment in the industry.

Optus and voda has matched telstra wholesale price and therefore all other virtual network providers that piggyback on their network has to increase the price as well.

As long as data usage increased like it is now and the main network provider needs to spend billions each year I dont think we can return to the days of < $20 for good amount of data.

Phone call however will still getting cheaper by the day

  • Absolute garbage, I will be coming up on 2 years soon and not bloody happy if this happens. Have enjoyed paying $11 a month for such great value, but no longer looks to be the case.. now to look for an alternative.

  • It doesn't even make sense that LC and Vaya are under the same company but offer different rates and ones that are obviously better than the others. Anyway, I'm still thinking of just switching to the Vaya $18 plan on a 24 month contract.. Waives the $20 fee and they said the rates will stay for the duration of the contract. Only thing is the billing of data in mb instead of kb.. Any semi-heavy users of data found that to be an issue?

    • Optus 100% own Virginmobile.. and do exactly the same thing..

  • Are Vaya increasing the prices for their already customers? I signed up to the $11 plan a couple of years back and don't wanna get an email from them…

  • +1

    Woah hang on?
We have to email today? Because February only has 28 days and most people(all?) refresh their plans on the 1st of the month, well we dont have enough time, right?
Looks like we are all going to get got for at least one expensive month at the new rate.
Can't we just port away? Is there still a notice requirement? Anyone know? Been years since I have had to worry about this..

    • AFAIK they still have to provide 30days notice. I still haven't received the email…I'll be expecting reasonable notice, or I'll refer it on to the TIO & get my CC provider to do a chargeback for the non-contracted amount.

      • +3

Hmmm right, well I am going to go right now and email my intention to port away.
This is so dodge. 30 day termination notice requirement, yet email received on the 30th and February has 28 days. Its actually not possible to meet the 30 day requirement before the new (1st March)plan is automatically applied. Can they even do this? Transition is on to a much higher cost/lower inclusion plan without our explicit agreement? Sounds extremely "borderline".
Gold star to the marketing dept for this one.

    • +1

Don't think we need to give notice to port.

Confirmed. We'd prefer it actually, saves emails etc

      • Hey sounds good kangaberries.
I emailed just to cover myself and based on what the OP said above but porting straight out without having to worry about due notice would definitely be the cleanest.

        • Yeh all good best to be safe then deal with it later.

Btw who did you end up going with?

        • Am yet to choose.
I think I will go over to Telstra prepaid for a while though. Just going to sit on prepaid for a bit as most of the deals blow at the moment and I want to stay flexible.

        • Hey guys. If we port on our own won't LC keep charging us?

        • If you're not in contract, then once you port out then LC can't charge you anymore.

  • I'm on the Live Connected Medium(Series 1) for $11.99 per month. Started using them years ago

    Still no email received yet.

I'm going with telechoice kogan deal
    http://www.telechoice.com.au/kogan-offers
Save up to $10 a month on what you’d normally pay for these great value TeleChoice 12-month plans! Plus, we’ll even give you 50% off your first month’s access fee!
And Data usage is calculated in 10 kilobyte (kB) increments

    • The $20 deal looks pretty good.

Would this offer work considering we are porting a number from LC over and are not actually a Kogan mobile customer?

      • The general consensus on WP is that TC will honour the Kogan deal for pretty much any customer porting in from any other provider…there seems to be options on the application page for other telcos.

This is looking like the way I'll be heading myself, so once I get the official email from LC I'll be trying it on for size! ;)

  • +9

OK well I have gone ahead and emailed to cover myself in case we have an obligation to notify out intention to port out. I am too tired to go look it up right now but wanted to "get in" in case it is a requirement. Top marks to peterpeterpumpkin for noticing this BTW.
I have copied the email I send Live Connected below in case its of use to anyone else but basically, port out notice requirement or not, the key point is Live Connected have only given us 29 days notice before shunting us to other plans. February has 28 days, email received January 31 and new plans billed from 1st March for most people. So they are in breach of the 30 day notice rule

Please let this email serve as notice that I intend to port away from Live Connected on or before the end of February 2014.

I acknowledge that the standard termination period is 30 days , however given two unusual factors, I request a shortened period. My reasons are twofold:

1/ I received only yesterday (January 31) an email from Live Connected dramatically and suddenly ending my plan and proposing my shunting to a much dearer plan with far less inclusions. Discovery 29 series 4 to Rapid 19 - Loyalty. This is unacceptable to me and and I reject the proposal outright.

2/ As per the standard agreement 30 days is usually required to terminate a plan. You will note that February has only 28 days and the termination email was received on January 31. Thus Live connected have provided only 29 days notice, not the required 30 days before the proposed changes take place.

I am prepared to overlook the notice shortfall but I insist on termination of my contract in a suitably shortened time frame. By 28 February 2014 WITHOUT rolling to the new plan or any forward charges

    A second matter:

As an early adopted of Live Connected, I paid a fully refundable deposit of $20. Please note this was a DEPOSIT not a SIM delivery fee. Please return my full deposit to my standard bank account at the termination of my plan.

    Yours sincerely, XXXXXXXX

    • Nicely worded! :)

    • Nicely worded, did you get charged a safety deposit?? I saw an old email 10/2011 and I only paid for that starter kit.

    • great wording. How (profanity) shoddy business practice is it that they only give us one month notice of this price hike. Absolutely ridiculous.

    • +2

Pretty sure Ben on WP said that it's not 30 days but 21 days notice. Not really much better but it's still a few extra days at least..

      "You don't need 30 days notice? I've said that a few times…"

      "Wait he's right – it's '21 days written notice'"

"Yep and it's both ways… 21 days from our side too.."

  • +1

What do people think of Pay-as-you-go plans?

I don't make many calls/texts(~30-60 permonth) and only a bit of data (~300-600mb) as well.

    • How about Telstra pre paid Cap Encore. $30 gives you $250 credit and 500 MB data. Free talk and text every night 6pm to 6am… seems ok to me. I have to avoid the Optus network since a tower was taken down recently and it might be 6 months before a replacement is found :-)

      • I am led to understand that there are some excellent ways to max out the value with Telstra prepaid these days if you know all their deals and how to play it "your way".
One example kindly shared by a member from Whirlpool is:
"If you sign up for a "Long Life" plan, you can get 12 months expiry, but the call costs are very high. But, if you then switch to "Simplicity" you keep the Long Life expiry date, but get Simplicity rates which are much cheaper."

So at the end of Feb I will probably grab one of those $10, $30 starter kits, register it as a Simplicity plan and port my number across. Then not sure how long to leave it (later in the day, next day?) add another $40 recharge and switch the now $70 credit to Long Life, thus Simplicity rates with a 12 months expiry. Note: need to have $70+ in credit otherwise 6 months expiry.

Something like that. Anyone know of any gotchas or pitfalls doing this?
        Better deal?

        • You have it the wrong way..
You sign up for Long Life, recharge, then switch to Simplicity for the Low call rates..
Pretty sure the call rates will apply to the current live plan.. it's the credit expiry that doesn't change.

        • Right, exactly!
          Thats what I meant.Lol
