How to spend a day in Vegas

OK, early Feb I have a weekend in Vegas. Arrive mid-day Fri, hit some shops and going to see D Copperfield on Fri night. Following day my mate is doing the Grand Canyon trip (I've done it before so no interest in going again). I have a Saturday to kill in Vegas!

Not into Gambling and I've been to Vegas 4 times before so the general 'walk the strip', catch the monorail, see the dancing fountains, look at the different casinos i've all done before.

Open to any of the crazy Vegas options but, as an OzB I'll be looking for a deal. Any ideas?

  • I hated Vegas - found that if you didn't like drinking 24 hours a day there wasn't a massive amount to do.

There are outlet shops if you are into shopping - just google Premium Outlet Las Vegas - there are two, one North and one South.

I also did the Grand Canyon helicopter tour and loved it - only took a few hours.

If you love your food Gordon Ramsay has a great burger restaurant - I think it was in the Planet Hollywood complex, and all the various buffets are pretty awesome, I tried the MGM Grand buffet which was fantastic.

  • I loved Vegas, and I don't drink! (I do gamble though). Been there 4 times as well and would go back in a heart beat.

If you want to get off the strip you could try a tour of Hoover Dam, which is quite interesting.
Or a cruise on Lake Mead.
An ATV tour of the desert.
Go to the Atomic Testing Museum or the Mob Museum

Etc etc… plenty to do depending what you are in to.

You can get married at the Elvis chapel.
The city hall is open 24 hours on the weekend so you can do it after Copperfield.

    • Can't marry his mate though, no same-sex marriage in Nevada.

  • have you guys done the coach tour or the helicopter flights to the Grand Caynon.

I'm trying to get the Fiance to do the helicopter(included Hoover Dam), saves a day, not so much money, but I'm sure its a better experience,

The real question is whether you want to go to the West Rim, or the South Rim. The South rim is within the national park, and is what most people think of when they imagine the Grand Canyon. It is truly spectacular.

The West Rim is not part of the national park, but within a Native-American reservation, and is far less impressive.

Helicopters are not allowed to fly over the South Rim/national park, so they can only take you to the West Rim.

While the coach tours take longer, they generally take you to the South Rim (double check before you book!), which in my opinion is worth the extra time it takes. If you are going to go all that way, you might as well get the best view you can.

I guess it depends whether you are more excited about seeing the Grand Canyon, or riding in a helicopter :)

The coach tours have you back by early evening, and you won't have missed much, everything good in Vegas happens at night anyways.

Edit: You may be able to get a flight from Vegas to the airport at the Grand Canyon which is near the South Rim, then take a coach tour from there, which may save some of the driving time… but either way… South Rim is the way to go!!

  • Thanks guys for the feedback. Doing the Outlets on Sat Arvo been there before, OK but not a patch on the ones in Orlando!

Buffet in MZGM is good, stayed there last time, staying in the New York, New York this time as one of my mates loves the '9 fine irishmen' pub in there!

I have toyed with the idea of the indoor skydiving (room with massive fan under the floor), the roller coaster on the roof of the Casino or something else.

    • I think I still have the bruises from the NYNY roller coaster from 4 years ago. If rides interest you, there are a few good ones on the roof of the Stratosphere. View is better at night imo.

Maybe go to the Gunshop and fire off a few rounds?

  • The Atomic Museum was quite interesting.

Get an In 'N Out Burger.

Go see the Penn & Teller show.

  • You could see Celine :)

Haven't been to Vegas but plenty of times to Orlando - gotta love the shopping there!!!

    • Isn't it Britney . And celeb friends in the crowd( Miley etc)? I would see Britney

  • We did:
Hoover Dam - very cool and worth the trip
Red Rock Canyon - nice for a hike and a bit of nature
Pinball Hall of Fame - not as good as I was expecting but pretty cool
Shooting Gallery - very cool, got a coupon out of one of the tourist brochures
Neon Museum - not as good as I was expecting but kinda interesting

Didn't do the Grand Canyon fly-over just because I am too cheap but heard its very cool.

    go drive massive machinery

  • Watch the "O' show by Cirque du Soleil. You won't find this show elsewhere.
    http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/o/default.aspx

  • Go to one of the cheap tix places all along the strip and get tickets to see Mac king. Funny and entertaining show at a fraction of the cost of copper field or blue man group etc. it's supposed to be a 'kids' show but there was plenty for the adults and heaps of adults without kids when we went. Watch our for the bear.

The Luxor usually has good exhibits but costs a bit more. When we were there last year they had a titanic one and a sports one. Both were excellent.

Spend the day at the rides park out the back of circus circus.

Get an early flight home !!

  • my wife and i aren't interested in purchasing tacky souvenirs from places we visit but in vegas we walked pretty much the whole strip and went to into the casino's grabbed a $1 chip from any table and that was our souvenir, needless to say we have about 50 casino chips from all over the vegas strip north and south. we have ones of casino that aren't there anymore and every time we go we visit the newly built ones and add to the collection. it's a good way to see the entire place. but that took us about 2 days to do with stops at cafes and restaurants and taking photos in each resort.

  • as an OzB I'll be looking for a deal. Any ideas?

and you are visiting there on a weekend - goodluck!!

With half of the US there (the other half in Atlantic City) - you get the drift, but as you have already commited, then one way to salvage your ozb reputation is to grab a car and go to Lake Powell, and visit the slot canyons, while your friend is wasting time at the not so comparable Grand Canyon.

    See here

Or Google "page slot canyon" for more sites.

    Or slightly less travel time

I know you're looking for a bargain and while that is subjective in some cases I would strongly encourage you to consider: http://www.exoticsracing.com/ if you're into your cars. This was by far my favourite activity I did in Vegas and the crew that run the place are really fantastic.

It probably was more of a bargain when the AUD was around 1.05USD when I was there but you'd be hard pressed the drive one of these cars for less than what they're offering. If you're looking for which ones to drive I would strongly recommend the Mclaren MP4-12C, Aventador and of course if you still have some coin after that the 458 if you've always wanted to know what the big deal about Ferrari's are :)

Otherwise I would also suggest getting tickets to Cirque du Soleil "O" as another poster mentioned. Hooters is nice and cheap and the view is free :)
