Nintendo 3DS XL bundled with Zelda: albtw and Pokemon X for $269 @JB HIFI [Malaga, Perth]

350

Went into JB Hifi Malaga Perth and saw the Professor Layton deal that was previously posted here so I asked if I could swap those two games for Zelda and Pokemon X. He agreed to do so and it only cost me $1 extra. I was told that my console would cost $171 and I would have an allowance of up to $98. I chose these two games but I'm pretty confident that they will let you choose any game that you want

Here is the previous deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/128821

EDIT: Also, the JB staff member was willing to price match but I couldn't find any brick and mortar places that had these two games for cheaper. I was expecting to pay $54 each for these two games but for some reason he charged me $49. Nice guy I guess?

    Just have a question.

I've never walked into any jb hifi with a receipt posted online before. How would i go about receiving this offer? Do I just show them the receipt and ask if I can get the same deal?

    Thank you.

    • I've never done it either but I'm sure if you showed them the post or receipt, they'll offer it to you yourself. That's what I'm hoping for anyway

      • They might, there is no halm in asking anyway.

        • +5

Exactly. Just keep carm, and hold out your parm.

  • +1

can get just the 3ds XL for $171? would be awesome!

    • You could try it out but I don't think it would work. I'm pretty sure the serial number at the bottom is for the bundle so if they typed that in, I'm guessing that it will show that the console was not a standalone product. Just a guess though, it'd be worth checking out

    • I'm pretty sure they just treated the two professor Layton games as returns and gave OP store credit. So I don't think you could get the console by itself.

  • +2

For me, i just walk in and ask for the same deal, if they say they can't then pull out the receipt.

Personally, I've never had to resort to using the receipt. JB has some decent customer service IMO

      Nice try JB staff.

The gaming staff that served me was actually really helpful and didn't seem too bothered when I asked about the swapping of games and if they would price match (which he said they would)

      • +4

While the checkout staff have been arrogant and disinterested (at Indooroopilly JB) for over 5 years now, I definitely give credit to the games staff as well. Very helpful, friendly and not pushy at all.

      • +2

I love JB staff. They're not hired for their marketing skills, but rather for their geekiness and product knowledge. I find often when I talk to one about a product - they can become incredibly passionate and you can tell they absolutely love the gadgets and toys that they are selling.

When I was in high school (and before I had a debit card or any real money, really), I found Guitar Hero PS2 on sale after school at JB Galleries Victoria but I was short $2. I asked the guy at the games counter if they could give me a minor discount so I could take it home that day, but because it was already heavily discounted, he wasn't allowed to do it. Then he pulled out his own wallet to make up the difference himself and told me not to worry about it. It's a small gesture from a stranger, but one that sticks with you. Every time I pick up games from that JB (it's going on 10 years now), the staff have always been great.

      • lol whilst i work in CS i dont work for jb =P

Anyway, seems i'm not the only person to receive some decent CS from the JB staff… At least they try and help unlike EB who stays at the counter and only "helps" when you ask for it…

tried at chadstone jbhifi (Melbourne) . they said couldn't do the price match :(

    • +1

Oh man, sorry to hear. I was hoping that as many people as possible could claim this deal. Everyone needs a 3DS XL and these games

      • +3

        I'm 24 and I still love Pokemon.

        :) :(

        • +16

          Only 24? That's cute.

        • +3

Hahaha I was thinking the same thing…. I'm 33 and i'm really enjoying Pokemon Y.

        • Good to see someone else in my age range also enjoys Pokemon Y. Seems like I'm the only one that whips out a 3DS on my train ride in and out of work to play Pokemon some days. :P

  • +2

Too bad the free Mario 3D Land promo ended. Would have made this deal even sweeter.

    • I thought it runs until 31 Jan 2014?

      • Ended 14th Jan.

        • Interestingly, my friend managed to claim his on the 15th. Not sure how that worked but it did.

        • Was it early morning 15th? Time differences?

        • I think that as long as you register the games before the 14th it should be ok. Even though I registered my games on the 13th, but I couldn't actually claim until the 16th.

  • -2

Not that great to be honest. Managed to grab the 3DS XL + Pokémon X and Zelda for $249 before Christmas at Target (they had a similar deal but ran out of the two games on offer).

Thought the price would have dropped by now but I guess it hasn't

    • +2

Got a receipt to prove that? Nothing was posted here for a 3DSXL console nearly as good as that deal was. Hell, the OP getting a console and those games for that price is dam lucky.

      • The deal was posted here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126096
Another similar deal was posted but at Bankstown Target - where I got mine as well. It was later taken down for reasons I'm not too sure. Like I said, this was before the Christmas period for $249.

I kept my receipt, not sure how to upload images on OB but here's the link: http://imgur.com/yqU00Qx

        • +1

Ahh I remember this deal. The receipt says Pokemon W. I'm guessing that's either Pokemon White or Pokemon White 2 and not the 3DS pokemon games?

        • +2

I remember now. My friends got me Pokémon X for my bday but I had no 3DS. I got my 3DS XL + 3DS game + DS game for $249. I got Zelda and Pokémon White for my friend.

Sorry, the OP's deal is probably for 2 3DS games. Good deal!

  • +2

Has anyone been able to get the same deal else where (with or without receipt?). I was under the impression that other JB stores don't have any obligation to match their other stores? Seems like trying to haggle with sales people, cheers for posting still!

    • +2

They don't. If you dont want to feel like a jerk, ask, but don't insist after they say no.

  • +3

Thanks for the deal op! Got the same from Malaga.

Somehow managed to get it actually $2 cheaper.

Maybe the same guy gave Strand0401 a $2 coin out of his own wallet.

  • I went to the Garden City (WA) store on Sunday and they refused to swap the games.

That was okay with me though because I wanted the two professor layton games anyway :-) I heard that Carousel has only one of the PL games and might be willing to swap the other one as it's out of stock.

Everyone, the 3DS is awesome. Get one. (And a Vita, too, with a US PS+ account you can't go wrong).

    • One vita and one 3ds? Oh yeah we have 2 hands, 2 eyes and 2 ears.

      • +1

I picked up the $200 Vita on the EB Games special just before Xmas.

The thing is that I was an Apple guy, I owned and loved my iPad, but I'd never owned a handheld console like a GBA or anything. But I do like my PS3 and Uncharted and so I got the Vita.

Surprise surprise, it was amazingly immersive and more responsive than an iPad despite the smaller screen. I realized I had been completely wrong all along, and that just like an iPad these devices are something that you must hold in your hands and USE in order to fully appreciate.

I mean the touchscreen pen on the 3DS XL sounds like the stupidest thing in the world to someone who has never used one, why go back from a finger? But after you've used it, seen the ridiculous pinpoint accuracy, and the orgasm-inducing "tap tap tap" noise of plastic on plastic… you'll be hooked.

So yeah Vita and 3DS, both amazing, both with different game libraries, both worth it.

I'm not trying to be judgemental on Pokemon but HOW are they still going? I honestly thought they were a fad and that after 3 years tops they'd fade away. Crazy good branding I guess, maybe it's how they manage to get parent approval so that mums and dads buy it for their kids.

PS I hope Facebook doesn't defy the odds just like them. Apparently it's meant to go out of fashion in 2018. I just don't like how ready they are to make a quick buck off everyone's data.

    • +2

It's like a drug, you pick it up for a quick game and you're hooked, just one more trainer battle you tell yourself, suddenly it's 2 days later and you haven't slept but you've beaten the elite four at least.

Repeat once a year for almost 2 decades.

    • I'm so impressed that kids (that are the same age as I was 15 years ago when I learned about Pokemon) are still picking it up. I can't think of any other brand that has held the same appeal for such a long time.

      • Uno.

        • +1

          Mario?

    • Unfortunately facebook has how many? 1 billion users or something? The thing is, everyone is already connected to their friends on facebook, so it's set in society.

I don't think it's going anywhere soon, sadly.

    • Its just like any MMORPG and how addictive it can get with making sure to get the best thing for everything.

I'm not sure how long the IV training and the EV training has been around for (i'm sure it was built into red and blue) but there's the whole i can get a unique pokemon that can beat everyone else in terms of stats.

Then there's the breeding and the whole i want to get the correct nature (again to boost stats), whilst i'm not sure if the younger generation cares too much about getting the best stats (sure they are just playing it because there's an anime for it) but i think all the older players are doing it for e-peen… just so they could say "i got a better trained pokemon then you"

      • You forgot about the shiny hunting ;)

        • OMG how could i forgot that… i want a shiny scizor… a poo green color… (yeah i kinda stopped playing after silver since i didn't wanna get a new GB, really tempted now…)

        • same. I didn't play a Pokemon title since Pokemon Yellow which surprisingly I still have in its original box. Cost me quite a few hours of work at the time. :)

I didn't know anything about Shiny Pokemon since I don't believe they existed in Pokemon Yellow? at least not that I was aware of. Since starting Pokemon Y, I've caught and traded for nearly 100 of them, Shiny Scizor being one of them ;)

        • Shinies came out in the gold/ silver versions, gonna go check JB tonight to see if my local still has this deal… or at least willing to do one more =)

        • Well i just went to check if i could get this and was told they received a memo about not swapping the games out =(

          Oh wells… saved me $269

        • OK, so swapping is a no go now, but is the offer #3 still avail with both Layton games as per originally offered?

        • From the store i went to, they still have the offer #3 there.

I guess you can try sell the layton games on ebay or something…

Might try another store and see if they guy is willing to swap them…

  • Any idea if JB can (not necessarily would) honour thus deal over the phone? My nearest JB is over a hundred km away, so a trip down the road to try my luck isn't practical!

But if I could get a combination of Luigi's Mansion, Fire Emblem or ZLBW with an XL for $269ish I'd jump in and only be a little salty at missing out on the free Mario promo :)

    • Just call them up and ask, if they will do it then ask for the person's name so you can find that person instore.

      • +2

Ideally, I want to buy it over the phone as well, and pay a little P&H. Sorry, my original post was not clear about that. I'll give 'em a ring at lunch, see what I can wrangle.

Forgot to mention, not only is my nearest JB over a hundred kms away, it is also situated in a regional town that is currently hosting the worst music event in the world: the Country Music Festival :/

No level of discount on an XL is enough to deal with that environment.

        • AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA omg that made me laugh so hard

  • Interesting. With two receipts I might stand a chance. Just got a cheque for $100 and Vita last year and have been loving mobile gaming. This might be my first Nintendo purchase :D

  • +1

Got the same deal a week or two ago from the JBhiFi in Werribee (not the one in the plaza, the one on the main road near the Bunnings).

The guy said it is "Deal #3" and you can substitute any two games that are the same price or MORE.
Basically, the system comes up as $171…there is a $39 game (Leyton: Mask) and a $59 game (Leyton: Azran).

I got a $54 game (Zelda) and a $49 game (Adventure Time - PS: just DONT) and paid like $4 over the bundle price.
They had stock of Silver, Red, White and Blue 3DS XL's.

He printed me a reciept, and when I went to the counter it was all packaged up and ready.

  • Is it possible another store (EB, etc) could pricematch this if the local JB isn't offering it? I'm not too familiar with these kinds of policies, but it sounds like it could be worth a try

    • EB tends not to match bundle deals, you could go and give it a try tho

  • Called JB in Melbourne CBD and they had received a memo on the intranet stating that they were not to process any of these deals.

Heading to target ater work to see if they'll price match the receipt.

  • Just went to the JB in DFO homebush, they wouldn't exchange the games for something else and gave me some excuse saying that the other JB stores were only offering different games because of the availability of stock and he said the most he could do was take back those games and give me $20 store credit for each. I decided it wasn't worth it to press the matter further and just left.(I was talking to the manager BTW)

    • Yeah this guy is talking crap. Both of the bundled games were in stock and on the shelf. I saw them with my own two eyes I did

      • +1

Ya this actually made me quite unhappy, I'd be fine if they just said they couldn't honor the same deal but blatantly lying to my face just…. left a sour taste.

  • As an ex jb employee and games manager, someone has made a big boo boo and is in trouble trust me :)

    • Surely it's not that big of a deal? the original games in the bundle weren't ordered in bulk so it's not like they are losing money. The games I bought were actually cheaper than the two games offered. I could understand the guy getting in trouble for giving me games that were more expensive or if JB had ordered the Layton games in bulk, but seeing as how I swapped for two cheaper games, surely that means he hasn't done anything wrong?

      • I asked about this deal at the Perth Enex 100 store and they said the bundles were arranged through Nintendo whereby the store is credited the difference. This means they aren't meant to swap games in a bundle.

The guy at the store knew about this OzBargain deal and said they'd been explicitly notified by head office not to alter bundles.

In short: nice work for yourself but this will be hard if not impossible for anyone else to replicate.

  • Damn late to this party, don't think the deal's on anymore and instead they have a 3DSXL Deal #1 that includes an accessories pack :(.

    • Hmm, it could still be on but I'm not sure. When the original 3ds XL with two professor Layton games deal first came out, I couldn't see any posters in stores and when I spoke to a few JB hifi staff members in the city, none of them even knew about it and they couldn't even find it on their own site. So you might just have to go to the right JB Hifi

    • The bundle is still on. I took advantage of it given I'm a Prof Layton fan anyway. Not advertised anywhere though - I did have to ask.
