Most of you probably know the Humble drill. This time it's audio books - they are pretty good books too. I have no idea about the quality of the narration but it seems worth a punt. Details from the email:

Pay what you want for The Satanic Verses, Stolen, Abandon, Junky and Found.
If you pay more than the average price, you'll also receive A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, Blood Meridian and On a Pale Horse.
All of these audiobooks come DRM-free in MP3 format and are playable across all devices.

Deal expires Tuesday, February 4 at 11AM Pacific Time, which I think is about 6AM Feb 5th (Wednesday) for Eastern Aus.

As of 9:30 this morning, average price is still pretty low - around $5.11.

      As to your question, the site says "The Humble Audiobook Bundle features eight brilliant audiobooks from the world's largest independent publisher and distributor of unabridged audiobooks, Recorded Books".

      So I guess it's fairly likely these are full books, unabridged…

        Thanks for picking that up. I've wanted to get into audiobooks for a while while I'm driving, but got a shock when I saw how much they cost on Itunes. So that particular project was put on hold.

          Look into Audible. They're Amazon's audiobook wing, and are far, far cheaper than iTunes. Best value is to go for one of their memberships, which give you credits each month to buy whatever audiobook you want (even if its standard price is $100). Also check out your local library, they usually have a decent selection on physical discs.

    Can anyone recommend a good phone app for listening to audiobooks which will save your place?

      I think most decent audio players will remember which track you where on and which second you paused (disconnected headphone/audio cable). Just if you listen to other music in between you might have to remember it yourself. Mine is Poweramp on Android.

      The standard music player on iphone/ipad does this - I listen to so many audiobooks that I changed the icons down the bottom to have Audiobooks as my first choice.

      It will remember where you are up to no matter how long it is between listening sessions!

    Just a question: Being DRM-free I assume you download from the Humble site, so does humble give any time limit on how long they'll keep the files available on their servers for?

    These days I tend to only ever buy digital content if I can redownload it anytime into the future (as long as the company lives). Sure I could upload into my own cloud storage, but I prefer it if the provider makes it unnecessary for me to do that.

      No time limit and you can download anywhere anytime, just keep the page bookmarked or the email they send you.

      This is the way software/entertainment should be!

        Yep, and Humble are well established enough that I don't think they'll disappear anytime soon.

        If you create an account with them, you won't need to keep track of the email / bookmark. You can 'claim' your purchases so you'll have a 'my library' section listing all your stuff when you log in.

        The only drawback for people like me who've bought a lot of stuff from them, is that there's only a few preset ways to filter your library of purchases - so the lists can get pretty long. I'm hoping they will fix that in the future but it's more of an annoyance than a real problem.

        Whenever I've purchased humble bundles in the past, I've really only cared about the items that go into my steam library, for the all-in-one-place convenience of it and future re-downloadability. Now that I'm considering buying something from them that won't go into my steam library, I just wanted to know that I'll still be able to get at it indefinitely into the future (or whether I need to make my own arrangements for that).

    I think Junky and Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian are the best. Cormac wrote 'The Road', 'All the pretty Horses', and 'No Country for Old Men' too (people might have seen the films but not read the books).

    It's good that the books are in industry standard MP3 rather than some aweful proprietary, DRM burdened format.

    I am currently listening to the Graphic Audio version of Brett's Warded Man. Graphic Audio productions are always excellent, and "The Warded Mann" is a very good fantasy novel, though like Martin's 'Song of Ice & Fire', it definitely isn't juvenile literature. I hate feel good kiddie fantasy.

    Perhaps an obvious answer exists, but is there a way to add these files to the "audiobooks" section of itunes, or do we have to create a separate playlist for each one in the music section?

      Yes there is a way:
      1. In iTunes, right-click on the file
      2. Click "Get Info"
      3. Click the "Options" tab
      4. Select "Audiobook" from "Media Kind" dropdown
      5. Tick "Remember playback position"
      6. Click "OK"

      And voila!

      Here's a screenshot for good measure.
