This has been around for sometime now, however I can't find anything on Ozbargain and I know some people aren't aware that it applies with Myki.

Free travel on Melbourne's electrified train network for trips finishing before 7.00am (weekdays). However technically it is before 7.15am exactly. I believe they have done this with Myki to allow for trains that are late. If your train arrives after this you will be charged.

You need to have a Myki and positive balance. You need to touch on and off and you wont be deducted anything.

If you only train into and from the city then this essentially halves the cost of your travel as you only pay for a 2 hour fare.

    It's not that easy to get up so early esp if you have to work till the regular end of the day. You either have to go to bed early or give up an hours sleep!
    You will grow to despise people who have late arvo meetings (esp if they are unproductive like most) and the fact that people think you always leave early (work less?) because there is no one in the office to see you do an hours work before everyone else! ;-)

      Activate the snooze button on your alarm clock when you're on the train, so you catch up on that 5 minutes extra snooze.

    I took advantage of the free morning travel whole of last year while I was still working in the city. It's great having to save $3.58/day, got me out of bed early for a morning workout at a nearby gym before starting the work day. Don't know why people complain about having to get up earlier when you can still catch a bit of snooze on the train.

    It's a different story if you need to catch a bus to the station though, I still had to pay if I caught a bus to the train station which totally negates the benefit.

    Still a very good initiative and I have a feeling it won't last long given the increase in weekend fares and tightening of 2 hour fares.

      Not all get a seat. On my line they are all gone after my station event at that early hour. 20mins shut eye on a noisy train doesn't compare to 20mins extra quality sleep in bed for most but some seem to seem through anything. The hours people can enter and are required to be at work will be different so could be a longer day. In summary it's good to have the choice while it lasts but the value will vary per person.

      Early Bird train travel
      Touch on and touch off within two hours and before 7.15am on a weekday, and make sure you have a positive myki Money balance, to receive the free Early Bird fare on your metropolitan train journey.

      So, if your journey home ends before 7:15am on a weekday then no you don't need to pay for it.

      The trains running this early always have spare seats. The purpose of this deal is to get people to travel on an earlier service and reduce crowding during peak times.

    I think it's free if you've touched on before 7.15am, doesn't matter if your journey finishes after 7.15am. At least that's what happened with me yesterday when touched on at 6.55am and touched off at Parliament around 7.30am

      I would prefer to pay less on land tax, stamp duty, car registration and stamp duty/transfer fees, road tolls, council rates etc.

      We pay for it many times over through these VIC special taxes.

      If I buy a $33000 EV in ACT the transfer fee is $46. If I buy the same car in VIC the stamp duty/transfer fee is over $1400.

    Should really be touch on before 7/7:30 and then get the trip free if it's within 2 hours.

    Would definitely ease up morning peak hour more. No one who starts work at 9 will want to head in that early.

      Lot of companies have made it mandatory to come to work for 2-3 days per week. So people do catch train to the city.

    I'm not sure if anyone saw the scenes in the Metro tunnel on New Years but a plus to this is you get to experience what catching trains in India is like right at home in Melbourne!

    If only CityLink had similar logic. It's crazy the toll prices are the same for 9AM on Monday and 10PM on a Sunday night. Vary prices for on/off peak incentivizes behavior changes.

      Touch on and off by 7am. They give you a grace period until 7:15am. In their words: "touch on and off before 7:00 am on a weekday, with an additional 15-minute buffer to allow sufficient time to disembark and reach a myki reader to touch off."

      In my experience it's a hard cut off of 7:15. I have touched off at 7:16 and been charged the full fare.

    Why this pop up after a decade…good luck finishing a journey to the cbd before 7am in the winter and get to office an hour before everyone and getting awkward looks from different departments when you try to leave by 4pm. God I hated working in Melbourne cbd.

    This gets posted almost every year on OzB, but a good reminder for those that don't know about it. I save a lot from doing this. Get to the office early, go for my run, get back to the office, shower, and in time to start work at 9.

    Note that you have to tap off before 7:14:59. The Pakenham/Cranbourne line to City right now is messed up until Sunday and I got charged today for tapping off at 7:15:38 :') Now I have to wake up even earlier…
