  • Is there a difference between sewing machines apart from the patterns?

    • Quality and amount of accessories (they can make a difference depending on what you want to do)
Also power. I weak machine has trouble sewing through denim (or a few layers of it)

    • I think Sewing machines are one product you do get what you pay for. These will be great to teach your kids with as they have to learn to do everything (as the machine doesn't have the auto or easy option), adjust stich length, tension, learn 4step button holes, thread needles, etc.
These have enough stitches to get started and if you use them to do simple repairs they will soon pay for themselves (those alteration places are soo expensive) . If, however, you plan to do more than this make life easy for yourself and buy something decent. You will enjoy Sewing much more and will make less mistakes and will have all the assessories to make whatever you like (and it won't cr@p itself if you try to shorten curtains with it). If you buy from a sewing machine shop (rather than spotlight, target or the post office that sell these cheap Sewing machines) they will show you how to use all the features and how to care for the machine which could be important if you are just starting out.

  • Can this do Business trousers where you cut if too long and then saw it without showing the thread externally (hope you get what I mean). Too expensive to have trousers amended professionally.

Edit: I just saw the term, it is a blind hem stitch.

You usually use a… Blind hem presser foot, to do blind hems. It doesn't look like it comes with one http://www.singerco.com/products/2227/6160 but you might be able to buy one to add on. My machine does it but I usually just hand hem, it is easy by hand and there is no chance of something going wrong and ruining you garment and you can do it while watching telly.

Good price for over here, but the RRP is over inflated here to begin with. List in the US is $199. Has some mixed reviews from great to awful on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/SINGER-6160-Computerized-Machine-Threa…). I suspect it's not bad but for an entry level machine the similar Janome (metal frame not plastic, 10 year warranty and also $199 plus shipping here: http://www.sewingmachines.com.au/brands/janome/jr1012.html with free scissors or free shipping here http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/like/181298305907 without the scissors) might be a little better even if it does not quite have all the bells and whistles?

Oh, and the blind hem foot is $20 for the Janome (http://www.sewingmachines.com.au/blind-foot-g-for-janome-sew…)
