What (and Who) defines a duplicate deal on OzBargain?

Let's say for example Safeway have Mars Bars on special for 99c. It get's posted on Sunday, the last day of the catalogue (unlikely, I know). Next day the new catalogue comes out and Mars Bars are 50c. The 50c Mars Bars are then posted as a new post within 24 hours of the 99c post. Now the question is are they the same deal and therefore a duplicate or two seperate deals. Another scenario is Harvey Norman advertise a plasma one week at $1000 and the next week at $900, exact same plasma, two different prices. A few weeks ago I posted an iphone with Optus for on the $49 cap, but it turned out that the day before someone had posted it for $59. At the time of posting I searched to make sure the deal was not a dulpicate, I saw the $59 deal but considered mine to be a new deal and not a dulpicate. My deal was removed as a duplicate and I did discuss this with Scotty but I am keen to hear some opinions on this.

  • IMO, new price is generally a new deal. But…if the deals are within a day, and the price difference is not significant $59/$49 (20%), then probably posting a comment on the original deals is appropriate.

As for the Mars bars, a 50% change in price might be worthy of a new post even though there is 1 day of difference.

It's hard to come up with rules that apply for every bargain. What if a merchant decided to post a 15% off deal, then the next day a 20%, and then the next 25%?

  • I reckon 20% is a pretty big saving. The problem as I see it is that if the deal is not reposted at the 20% saving then a lot of people are not going to see it because they have already looked at the original post and won't see the new price. What is the procedure when a price changes?

  • +1

i just had a deal i posted deleted because after i entered the details of the deal, i doublechecked to make sure it wasn't a duplicate before i submitted it, only to discover another person posted the same deal so mine was posted about 30 seconds later and ended up being a duplicate.

maybe next time i shouldn't check first so i end up 30 seconds ahead?

what peeves me is that the person that got the deal up first didn't even have the right dates in there.. so by taking the extra time to make sure it was right, i earned myself 3 negative votes for being a dup. go figure. doesn't really encourage me to bother posting up any more deals.

guess i'm too sensitive for this place.

    :(

    • Kimmi, it's just bad luck. In your case, if 1 had more details than the other I would probably have kept yours but as the other deal had 11 votes and yours had negs for being a duplicate, then went for the one with positive votes.

You did the right thing by checking but posting the same deal within minutes happens very rarely. Keep on posting ;)

  • wow, and i've been banned from submitting any deals for 5 days because of the negative votes too!

    • I've revoked the redundant negative votes so try it again. (scotty's intervention may still be required.)

  • Just wanted to bring this up again because of the Zoo deal posted by wowdeal www.kelloggzooentry.com.au The oringinal was posted over a month ago by aka128 and wowdeal has reposted it in the last couple of days. I'm grateful becuase I did not see the original and I can't see the harm in it being reposted over a month later! I am interested to know others opinions on timeframe of reposting. Also the original post can no longer be voted on,

    • If you navigate to the removed deal here, you'll notice that the moderator has given a reason "Duplicate" and a link to go to the original offer. I don't see a problem here.

    • If wowdeal had done a search and found the original (same) offer then he could have posted in it stating he just found the same deal. That might have brought it back to people's (your) attention.

I am guilty of posting dupes but my issue is that when you search the forum, the results aren't necessarily in date order. That can make it hard to find the dupe.
