Belkin Wemo Automation Switch + Motion Sensor Kit $79.95 Delivered - OO.com.au

70

Previously being sold for $99 at Officeworks

Control home electronics through your Wi-Fi network and mobile internet with the WeMo Home Automation Switch and Motion Sensor Bundle. When WeMo Motion senses movement, the magic begins! The sensor plugs into an outlet and detects motion up to 25.4cm away. It then sends a wireless signal to the WeMo Switch to turn the connected device either on or off. Download the free WeMo app to any smart device running Android (4.0 and later) or Apple device (iOS v5 or higher) to program a light to turn on when you enter the house or a fan to turn off when you leave.

Additionally, you can easily set schedules to turn your devices on and off remotely and you can also add multiple switches and motion sensors for increased control. Multiple switches can be linked to the one sensor - turn on a light and heater or a set of lights at the same time with only one sensor.

Easy to setup and use, WeMo is your home at your fingertips!

WeMo is your home at your fingertips!

    What does that mean?

    • +10

Basically allows you to do this.

Dammit. I want one so bad, but $80 is still a lot of money and I have no idea what I'd use it for.

stream porn at max volume when someone approaches the door.

        Sold.

        • I still don't know what I'm going to use this for. Especially since most things don't operate automatically once power is supplied to them; they go into standby mode and then need a button to be pressed to turn them on.

        • like i said, for streaming porn ;)

most desktop bios has a setting that says "upon power restored: " then you can choose "boot" or "last state" or "power off".

i don't know about yours but I've been running BBSes since the 80s and all the desktops/laptops I own have this feature.

in the past i could do things like configure the 'server' to restart by dialing the modem 3 times and hanging up on the 3rd ring each time. or play a playlist when i dial and hang up 5 times everytime on the 1st ring. :)

modern day applications would be lamps, radios, blenders, fans, old heaters to name a few, you just need to know your own inventory of stuff at home man.

You could even turn on your router on/off if you are last person to leave the house…

        • I mainly use macs, but I have a couple of PCs that I could use for something, but Wemo doesn't seem to be the best option for that since the PCs are already internet connected.

At the moment, I'm thinking a party set up for my liquor shelves with the switch connected to strip lighting, a set of speakers, and an Airport Express. So I can turn it all on via my phone, then stream music via Airplay.

That would leave the sensor free for something else, like emailing me if it detects motion in the house during times when no one should be there. Next step would be an IP camera.

for me, i would use it to turn on/off my router and network devices. :)

other than saving electricity, it helps to reduce the probability of someone leeching my bandwidth. /paranoia :D

This is useless without a comprehensive scheduling system that uses conditions. I don't want the light to turn on if it's day time, for example. Or if it's at night and I am watching TV.

Turn electric blanket on on the way home?

    • +1

I have a two storey house and it would be great to just turn on the electric blanket from downstairs. Perhaps also switch on the air conditioner 15 minutes before getting home?

      • If you know the time you're getting home, most AC units already have timer inbuilt.

        • I get home at all different times each day so it would be handy to switch on with the phone. Oh, and my air conditioner is incredibly crap and I wouldn't rely on it handling a timer.

  • I love the concept of automation but I can't figure out how these would be beneficial for much IMO. Most appliances I have in the house that benefit from timers already have them built-in! The only thing something like this could be good for I suppose is to automate a lighting schedule for when you're away but even then you could do that with much cheaper basic timers. I suppose it'd be handy being able to switch the AC or a heater on from work to get the temp nice before you reached home but you could also plan ahead and set the timer to do this anyway.

$80 landfill fodder? I really have been trying to justify these, I really have but can't :(

It's great that you have a job where you know, in the morning, what time you'll be home that night.
It's only $80 landfill fodder if you buy it and don't use it.

It's only landfill fodder if you buy it and then throw it out…

It's great that you have a job where you know, in the morning, what time you'll be home that night.

So do a majority of Aussies.

If you are indeed a member of the SAS typing to us from a forward operating base in Orugzan, than maybe you have bigger concerns than the new Belkin Wemo Switch and Motion Sensor Kit for 79.95.

    • I could use one to start warming up the espresso machine early in the morning or on my way home from a bike ride. Don't really have much of a use for the motion sensor part at the moment, though.

  • These must be connected to a remote (Belkin?) server to work. Feel free to ignore this, but I've heard that hackers can port scan for the listener service and then rapidly power on/off the connected device which can kill it. I have no idea if this is possible or not though?

    • Yup it connects to belkin's server that's why you can remote switch via your 3G/4G service when you're outside your wifi network.
