Tray of 25 Calypso Mangoes $20 @ Souqfresh Burwood Westfield (NSW)

150

Passed the fruit market in Westfield Burwood (NSW) and couldn't help but notice the trays of mangoes!

25 mangoes per tray = $0.80 each! They are medium sized. Probably not as big as these (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126049) but still a very good price nonetheless.

Have a good weekend everyone.

  • Seems kinda standard at this time of year. And these aren't top drawer Kensington pride/Bowen mangoes, they're calypso which are generally regarded as a lesser variety.

    • Coles are selling 2 medium to large Kensingtons for $5. It's hard to justify that they're ~80% better than Calypso's. Personally I prefer the taste of Calypso mangoes.

    • Up until a couple of years ago, the Calypsos were always a disappointment after the Kensingtons. The good ones are now really good (I had a few last year they were amazing), but you have choose carefully.
Buying a box of the early arrivals is certainly still a bit of a gamble.

Incidentally, the Honey Gold variety won't be far off, but worth being wary of the Keitts (last to arrive, usually) - they look like the Calypsos, but they were all pretty lousy last year.
As for the R2E2s, do any OzBargainers like them? Curious to know. Not one of the CSIRO's better creations in my opinion.

Regardless, I'm now hungry for a mango!

  • Just bought 1 box of 20 calypso from Vic market for $10 this morning and they taste yucky. So sour that my teeth hurt. Should've bought the Kensington ones for $16 :(

  • I purchased a tray from them today, they look nice outside but I tried 2 and they are not that great. Not much sweetness in them. But at least not sour.

  • Tried calypso ones last year and didn't like them very much.. Was regretting that tray! Got a tray of 22 medium sized Kensingtons for $17.99 at Thomas Dux Hornsby yesterday. Yum!!

  • I got a tray of Calypsos from Woolies in mid Dec and really enjoyed them, sweet, tasty, not too stringy, small pip. The 'greengrocer' said don't put them in the frig as that makes them go wrinkly. So, I didn't and the temps were high in mid Dec so I was keeping a close eye on them.

They lasted perfectly for the 2 weeks before all eaten w' no loss of quality or flavour.

  • I bought a box of calypso from costco and they were yummy, my favourite has always been KPs.

So decided to get another box from a greengrocer yesterday $15 for large ones.

Not nice, even though they are ripe, they were not sweet and not flavoursome.

Will stick to my KPs next time :(

  • Bilbo, thanks, I won't buy any at this time, But may well in mid Dec next year I will if offered. Maybe, it's a timing thing.

  • I find that they often drop to $15 or even $12 sometimes at the end of the day at burwood. Something to keep in mind if you're thinking of getting some

  • I saw these last weekend at the fruit shop at Westfield Fountain Gate for $15 a box. I would assume they still have the same deal.

  • You can also get 30 mangoes for $25 at http://www.strawberrypoint.com.au/ if you live in east of Melbourne
