1380

Saw these at Woolies Coburg and couldn't help myself… bought 2 boxes (26 mangos). Weighed one and it came in at 330g! Just polished off a couple and must say, no-one's touching the rest but me! Here are some mango fun facts.

What I imagine TightAss's face must have looked like when he saw those HUGE mangos at Woolies.

    • +4

Not far from the truth scrimshaw! Love my bargains.

    • Is that the Gangnam Style guy

      • +31

        Gangnam backwards is almost mango.

        • +2

Mangos backwards means you're eating them wrong.

        • +3

          Ognam style.

  • Cheers TA. I am just trying to figure out if I should just drive past the 2 Woolies on the way, or call in to see if they have the same deal.

    • Go for it. Absolute bargain. If they don't have the same deal, show them this post, or get them to call Coburg. They may give you 13 'normal' mangos off the shelf for the same price. Nothing to lose.

      • +2

saw these at my local this arvo

they werent that big so i passed on them and bought 6 hand picked "Bananas" for $4

  • +3

    I love mango season!

  • +2

What brand/type are these mango? R2E2? Kensington? Something else?

    • +3

      Just the regular yellow/red variety.

      • +2

Or the regular 'sweet, round, best fruit' variety works too :-)

    • If it's a 'Bowen Special' it's most likely Kensington.

      • +3

Can confirm - they are Kensington Pride, Class 1

      • yep, Bowen special are Kensington pride the best mangos

        • When did I walk into a 'Mango afficinados' meeting? :P

  • +1

    bought a tray earlier…ended up gtting 14 in the tray…mine were calypso,,,best mango…imho

    • +4

ended up getting 14 in the tray

I was robbed! Or did you sneak an extra one onto your tray :)

  • +4

They would never have this type of special in Springvale.
If they did, the whole pallet would be bought by 1-2 persons. :)

  • +7

    I prefer Kensington. great price

    • +5

      Agree. Kensington Pride, the best.

    • +1

Totally agree on the taste, price wise in Perth it's pretty pricey at the supermarkets.

      • Aren't Bowen and Kensington Pride the same? :S

        • Bowen isnt a variety of mango, they may be grown in Bowen, but Bowen is a variety of tomato

Found this image by searching 'calypso mango size' :

    • +1

The seatbelt gives a great sense of scale.

  • +1

    I got 16 in mine :)

    Four rows of 4

  • +1

Did anyone know if the same offer is avail in Perth?

    • I saw them at currambine woolies this arvo if that helps…

    • They had it in Woolworths Karrinyup last week. Calypso, a tray for $17.89

  • I got 16 mangoes for $15 from Woolies in Menai, Sydney. They were on the smaller side and Calypso brand :) YUM!

  • +4

If anyone in Liverpool Westfield goes to the Country Growers (or whatever it's called), they had a box of 10+ mangoes for $10. Not a super bargain as they had already peaked in ripeness and felt pretty soft. As a fellow OzBargainer mentioned the other day, those are perfect for smoothies or my favourite: mango mousse :)

  • +5

These are high on sugar, so don't think you're eating healthy just because it's fruit.
HOWEVER, if you're replacing say icecream or chocolate with mangoes, you're getting some real fibre and more vitamins, still not great to pig out on but definitely a better alternative.

I'd recommend spooning them out into icreamcontainers if possible and freezing, not only would they taste awesome frozen, might make for a good smoothie (not milk based, try maybe 1/3 of a lemon, half a mango, half a banana, a heap of ice and some water) - wild guess, still at least 250 to 300 calories but you'll have near 6 to 800ml of tasty snack.

Personally? I don't have the discipline to have such sweet stuff in my house :(

    • +7

      I'd recommend spooning them

      Hahahahahahahaha.

    • +2

So, me eating them with icecream is no good then? :P

    • +1

Do some research on why fruit and veggies are not only the natural food and the healthiest food for humans but also can be safely consumed until one is fully satiated. Begin with http://www.peta.org/living/food/natural-human-diet/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_China_Study

      • I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or what - but you're kidding yourself.
Mangos are HEAVY in calories - extremely high in sugar and not something I would recommend as something you can "safely consume until fully satiated" - for a start most westerners definitition of "fully satiated" has been butchered the last 100 years, fully satiated does not mean eating until you can't physically move anymore.

  • Bought 4 for $10 earlier this week :/

  • I saw them today but they were not big. On the smaller size but beautiful red yellow color no black marks or green and that was good value for a box.

Half the boxes had been robbed so people were obviously helping themselves to a few more than they were supposed too.

  • +3

Nice to see people enjoying some Aussie mangoes!

    • +4

Yep Aussie grown fruits are great. I love going to qld and all the fellas selling fruit on the side of the road. Mango lychee cherry nectarines kiwi banana pineapples. Yum yum

  • +1

Who doesn't like hUge mangoes, so juicy and tender :)

  • +2

There's innuendo in there somewhere… I just can't seem to put my finger on it… ;)

  • Typical, Qld mangoes are cheaper in every other state than Qld. No mango deals when I was at Woolies this morning - approx $2.50 each

  • +7

Ok. 4 mangos in one night. Could quite easily go another 4. Goodnight all.

  • Joy of North QLD free mangoes. we pay for it in aircon power

  • You people down south are getting ripped off with mango prices. They're cheaper up here in Queensland.

    • +4

      Ok. I'll move tomorrow.

      • Not cheap at the supermarkets though. Try the local fruit shops. Supermarkets rip people off any where. I live in central QLD.

        • Yep, I got a tray of 20 for $6 a few weeks ago from local fruit shop (not quite that price when I went yesterday though unfortunately..)

  • i love MANGO

  • voluptuous mangos.

  • Mmmmm…. Mango.

  • +4

Guys, sorry. R2E2 and Calypso just doesn't slice it when it comes to Mango flavour.
Don't be fooled by size (R2E2) or colour (Calypso).

Kensington is the way to go.

    • I guess everyone has a different taste…I prefer calyspo by miles as it tastes nicest and is not tooo sweet.

    • R2e2 have no flavor, but I can tell from the photos just by looking they are not r2e2. R2e2 have a lot of red on the skin, making it really pretty, ot these, these have the yellowness of a kensington, I dunno about calypso thou.

  • +1

The tip is, as you walk past and you can't smell it keep walking. Simple as that. Even my young toddlers can work out which one to buy.

It's a treat for yourself and your family, so why settle for 2nd or 3rd best?

    Go Kensington.

    • Yep, ignore size and colour, it's all about the smell. Pick one up, have a sniff and if it smells like a mango, buy it!

      • Pick one up, have a sniff

        My dog loves mango…

        • My dog loves mango too.

  • Infact the scanned price is $14.98 and by using ing card the price comes to $14.23!! Yipee !!

    • Is the special limited to this brand of mango? The local Woolies don't seem to have their mangoes on sale…

  • +1

Just got $15 box for 16 Calypsos at Woden.

  • +2

    Confirmed at Balgowlah, NSW

  • +2

If they get a bit overripe make your own mango weiss ice-cream. I found a recipe online somewhere years ago. Tastes awesome.

  • +1

Country Growers at warringah mall brookvale have kensington pride mangos at $15 per box of 18 mid to large size mangoes. But I think it is only whilst stock lasted.I got mine on Friday

  • arggg.. no deal in Hornsby.. calypsos are 3 for $4.50, still not too bad, but I want my mango trays!!!

  • At this rate, its safe to assume theres a lot of mangos in the woolies dumpsters nightly at the moment if keen haha

  • Australian mangoes sold in Woolies and Coles are all sprayed with nasty chemicals. You think it's a great deal but the risk to ones health might not be worth it overall. Organic mangoes dipped in just hot water would be far safer according to this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy30oh8malM

    • Yeah i once worked on a mango farm here in Queensland for a few days during mango picking time where the mangos were destined for a supermarket in Sydney (was probably Coles or Woolies). They spray the mangos with chemicals on a conveyer belt before boxing them. And that's just on the packing stage who knows what kind of crap they spray on the mango trees. It's all true about the chemicals. Though this was a number of years ago but i doubt it's changed.

Personally i would never eat a mango from a supermarket.

      • Mate, this doesn't just apply to mangoes, it is pretty much all fruit and vegs. Unless you go full organic it won't make much difference. Organic doesn't mean there's no pesticides either, only different types of pesticides. Also, that is why you're suppose to wash your fruit and vegs before eating them.

    • Not saying it's not true but this guy on YouTube is on the fanatical side….

      • Fanatical for health maybe but not so fanatical in eating junk food with more than enough data and graphs showing how obesity and death caused by these very foods is at an all time high!

  • +1

I bought one box with 14 mangos in it for $15. Weighed the biggest one, 500g! Not from WWS, from a fruit and veggie shop.

  • +1

Got a box of 18 mangoes for just 5$ from Sydney Market today.. they are quite big too.. I guess each one are around 400 gms.. and quite tasty as well.. compared to that woolies deal is quite expensive :)

    • Yeah the best deals are from the local fruit shops or markets and they're also more likely to be organic mangos (where they're sprayed in hot water instead of chemicals). Supermarkets are a rip off and a much higher chance of getting chemical sprayed mangos.

  • +1

Agree R2E2 are rubbish.. Big and tasteless.. I get calypso brand which I think are KP mangoes from Aldi at $2 each

    • +1

I wonder if theres C3QO Mangos :) (Star Wars reference :D ) If there were theyd be really gold nice occasionally but kinda up themselves haha

  • Morley (WA) Woolworths didn't have this but Morley Fresh (Fruit and Veg shop) just near it had KP mango tray for $10. They aren't huge but that are a good size, few blemishes here and there but nothing major for the most part.

  • Thomas Dux doing trays of Calypso for $13.

  • i got ripped off. 2 for $4.50 at my local woolies today…

  • I love an Aussie man with huge mangos…

    • I love huge man with Aussie mango…

  • No cheap mangos at Marden SA.

  • That's really good value. Are they sweet? I normally buy the two for $5 every few days or so.

    Thanks.

  • really good price.
    the mango looks so good.

    We bought a box.

  • Live in Cairns and this is just above the average price for mangoes (from the farmer). If you have too many and worry about them spoiling try cutting off the flesh, blending to a puree and freezing in small serves. AMAZING frozensnacks :D

  • +1

Costco ringwood has 16 mangos for 14$(*obviously need membership). Calypso brand and sweet n yummy!!
