  • Anyone know if these take a number of C cells?

    • -1

      3 X C Cell

      • +5

        err…no. This is a 3D torch…which means it take 3 D cells. Not quite the 6D "honest it's a torch not a baton" though.

        • whoops was meant to be a D

  • +1

thanks just got one and used a
    $10 store credit i had :)

    • i had $10 credit too, but from scoopon so bought it there

      • +1

How did you guys get the credit?

        • +1

i got mine from buying a camera from COTD

Question: Do I need a 6th LED torch?
    Answer: probably not…

  • +1

What a whooz. Only 6 LED torches

  • +2

According to my torch maths (judging by all the CREE deals we have on here), 131 lumen output from something sucking up three, D cell batteries (3 x 1.5v) seems pretty paltry.

And it even says "upto 131 lumens" because this torch apparently varies the output to extend battery life.

Oh well, still bought it. Lol.

    • +4

Varying output is pretty standard on led torches. The super bright Li Ion torches do so too, in some cases to prevent cooking the battery and ending in a bad situation, but also to improve run times. They step down from high, to mid. Or from turbo to high depending on model etc. They can do so after just 30 seconds, some might take 5 mins again depending on maker and model.

Secondly, the outputs given by many producers are overstated, or measured from different places. If it does .25lux at 340 odd metres, its on par with them in brightness, while exceeding the AA alkaline crees by 100 odd metres in throw. It will outlast them in runtimes too, on high. I dont think this has variable settings such low mid high, most of the AA variants do. The run time on these Mags is claimed to be 79hrs. Its not bad for alkalines or rechargeable nimh's even if it only gets close.

The downside of these torches is the odd number of batteries. You buy either packs of 2 or 4 D cells usually. So you will have 1 spare and would need to buy another pack of two to make a fresh set. But by the time most people will need them with long run times, the first one could be old, or lost. Even number cell bodies make more sense, but these might be nicer to carry than say a 4 or 6 cell.

Not that its a deal breaker, but I think Im going to give it a miss, but I am tempted at the price.

Something else you can do with C and D cell torches is use those battery adapters/converters which use just one or two AA batteries instead of a C or D cell. Obviously you won't get as long a run time, but if you get tired of trying to keep a stock of every sized battery on the planet, it's handy to be able to throw a few AAs into the torch instead. This listing shows a range of the adapters, but there's lots cheaper ones out there. (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/10sets-Lot-4pcs-set-AA-to-D-A…)

  • Good deal. Not sure why this substantial unit which is the best priced of all the models on todays "sale" is designated free shipping, whilst all the other torches still have postage on top, but happy to take advantage. Been watching this model on Amazon for months and it rarely dips below $22 US before shipping. Whilst it's not as bright as some, 80 hours from 3 x D's provides a good combination of visibility and er… security.

    Thanks OP!

  • Can you get an LED Dolphin torch as well?
Similar vintage and also stupidly heavy.

    • +1

Depending on needs that can be a godsend. The everyday carry LED torches are great, they often have bezels that make weapons against people, strobes etc, but the physical attributes are not much good against say a dog. I have no idea if strobing a dog would be effective. If youre out walking your dog and satans helper comes along, you have a baton with one of these or the longer ones.

For most of us it depends on your purpose …and particular paranoia.

There are professionals though who need to take this stuff seriously as 'attacks' of one kind or another are part of the job.

And yes, you can buy Dolphin LEDs. I believe they make decent floody lights, not much throw. But Ive not seen them myself in action. Being 6 volt I would assume they could run a very long time, or drive an LED hard to make it bright.

        Dafuq?

I'm fairly certain he wasn't asking about the possibility of an LED Dolphin Torch because he needed to temporarily blind post-apocalyptic Cujos roaming his neighourhood.

        • +1

No, but he did make reference to in his words 'stupidly heavy'. Heavy has its function. I simply stated why a heavy baton is helpful and preferable to some.

      • 100 lumens from the LED Dolphin. How terrily sad.

        • +3

I rekon. Can't be as good as my $3 7000 lumen pocket size torch that runs on a single AA battery!

Or maybe Dolphin are just honest about their torch outputs.

        • +1

On the flip side, it probably has a pretty good run time.

        • But you can get 100 lumens from a single AA.
Even the halogen Dolphin is rated at 210 lumens from 10W. Replace with twin Cree XM-L and get 1000 lumens.
Yes, the Chinese shops would call it 1800 lumens (based on the theoretical max of the emitters).

  • are these just retrofitted old school truck can drive over it maglites?

  • +1

I got one a while back, $39.95 from Coles as a Father Day special. It's still running the original Duracells, though not bright by todays standards, its bright enough for a late night breakdown + it's good for some in-car security…..At $20 I've just bought a spare.

  • that guy in the photo, does he think he's gandalf or something..

    • +1

Rolled up Rupert the Bear pants are "cool". Poms on holiday are sooo "cool"…Lol Poms.

  • Got one the last time a few months ago when they had the same offer and put it in the car under the seat …

  • Thanks OP, just ordered one. Good deal.

  • Thanks mate, good deal. My last one went walkabout. They seem to have a habit of doing that. :p

  • Thanks OP also got one

  • Yep got some for my cars for in car security

  • I have $20 Store Credit in my Scoopon account but there is no option in checkout to use this credit. Anyone know how to use it?

    • Log into your account, add item to cart and your the credit is automatically used to pay for items in cart.

The review of this Mag lite by Seth Rogan is what sold it to me

      • so true!

  • Thanks, bought 1.

Serious question, would this double as a good window smasher if I kept it in the car / glovebox incase I drive into a lake and need to escape or something?

    • +6

Your handle suggests male, yet the comment suggest female.

    • it's big and tough, so probably yes, if u have enough room to swing back far enough

      • I could be wrong here but the escape hammers made for the purpose are small and pointy heads. If fully submerged a proper hammer might not work.

I have no idea on depths etc. I assume there are some mythbusters who will elaborate.

    • +2

Search for "Bust A Cap" on Ebay. I have one on mine for "extra security".

    • probably better to get a specialised window breaker that's more compact and effective if you have a tendency to drive into lakes ;)

  • +1

Coles currently has 4 packs of D cell batteries
    - Energizers $7 http://tinypic.com/r/jukbao/5
    - Duracells $8 http://tinypic.com/r/23j0mwx/5

And for the Dolphin lads, the Energizer 6v is around $7 at Coles.

I bought 2 sets of batts today, and ended up buying the Mag yesterday.

  • +1

Great post, but the marketing of these and other torches that take 3x D size batteries as '3D' in big letters makes me cringe. Lamest marketing trickery attempt ever.

  • Does this include the batteries? I bought one anyway though.

  • how solid are these when used as batons ? without damaging the actual torch.

    • these are about 650g with batteries. if i had to defend myself with this torch, i'd be more concerned about damaging the offender with it than the torch. just buy another one!

    • Decades of law enforcement usage where the larger D/C-cell Maglites were standard issue in the US suggests these bigger torches made of 6061 aluminium can crack a few skulls if you're ever caught short:
      http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&obje…

More than 50 incidents involving Los Angeles police using flashlights as weapons have been reported since 2002.

Bratton proposed a change after June 2004 when fleeing motorist Stanley Miller was struck 11 times by an officer using his metal flashlight in an incident caught by a TV news crew and broadcast around the nation.

The LAPD phased out Maglites in favour of smaller, LED flashlights partly because officers were prone to using their Maglites as weapons, lol.

      • run from the police and you're gonna have a bad time :D
