I'm really enjoying all this classical music going for free. It helps me broaden my musical taste without having to do much.

      I read,

helps me Broden my musical taste

    • Exactly. Much better than mainstream radio.

    Thank you. Good music!

Free, but still asks for credit card number, but bills $0. Not sure why, probably a way for Google to know more even about you…

    • I think for anything other than apps which are free, Google will ask for credit card details even if the cost is $0.

    • +3

Rubbish. The app is 100% free. Subscription is optional.

    • Not a con at all. As deathjr's said - the album is free and the app is free. Your "$11.99 per month" happens to be the cost of subscribing to Google's All Access streaming music service. You're clearly confused.

    • Are you jillbob or Joe Bob?

  • Thanks a bunch. I was having trouble signing up with my debit card, then I noticed it was in negative balance.

  • Any way of purchasing without having to enter a payment method for something with no cost.

    • +1

Depends on if they actually verify the funds or just the CC number…

If the latter something like this could work… http://www.getcreditcardnumbers.com

      Give it a shot :)

      • Google usually puts a $2 authorisation against the card. They know their game and their opponents :-P

    • Not that I know of. And well, Google is clever, nothing is free, everything is paid by data.

Not that I mind in this case. A low value debit card does the trick.

      • Your data may be worth something if you're average and fit all the trends.

      • "Invalid card shown" using Australia Post Load and Go Visa in my case.

        • I use a Citibank Prepaid Visa Giftcard (the best use of their rewards points). Works a treat.

Is your balance >= $2? They get an authorisation for that amount. That amount is not actually charged to your account but blocked for around 1 week.

        • I haven't been able to successfully sign up using any of my debit cards, although they're all fine. I always get the 'invalid credit card' message. Even tried Google Play help, and some CSR said they only accepted cards issued in the US. Clearly that's wrong! Very frustrating! Missed out on the Domingo selection and now this. Is it because I have a Mac?

        • Is it because I have a Mac?

Not at all – Google Play Music is virtually platform independent, much like their other services. Also, I have a Mac and it works fine on it.

Google, microsoft, apple, and the NSA already know everything you have ever done so giving them your credit card number shouldn't be a problem!

Well there was that one time in Vegas. But what happens in Vegas ……

This is a good deal as its free, but if you had to pay for it its very expensive for what it is.
Also, music is lossy mp3, albeit 320k which is ok but not great if you have decent listening gear.
Why dont the stores offer lossless audio, i.e. Flac or apple alac.

Anyway, for those new-ish to Classical. Please try to listen to the same "song" from different orchestras. I particularly like the San Francisco Symphony's version of Hall of Mountain King - Peer Gynt.

    • Sounds Great!

+1 for the second comment about listening to different recordings. They can be vastly different - some are lifeless and dull and others are dynamic and absorbing.

I also agree with the first point in general but would be very surprised if anyone can tell the difference between FLAC and 320kbps mp3.

Getting on my engineering soapbox for a minute, all recorded audio is lossy. No exceptions. Especially digital audio :) FLAC/WAV just have no losses imposed in software. There are plenty of losses, distortion, and noise added in the ADC (recording), DAC (playback), amplification and transduction (i.e., a speaker turning electrical signals into air movement). That means any additional losses imposed by encoding to a high bitrate MP3 vs FLAC are likely to be at a level undetectable by your ear/brain.
This is especially true if you're using low-mid end audio gear (including phones and PC).

Personally I can tell 128 kbps CBR MP3 from CD, but only if I think about it (i.e. the audio quality doesn't draw attention to itself). I do most of my encoding in 192 kbps VBR and doubt I could tell the difference unless I focused really hard, and maybe not even then. An audio engineer would undoubtedly do better :)

However, if it makes you feel good to encode in FLAC, or you genuinely hear a difference, good for you!

EDIT: Not picking on you here kzrocky. I do agree that 'lossless' should be available to those who want it, if you pay for it.

    Thanks.
    Downloaded to PC: 12 tracks @ 320 Kbps MP3 = 138 MB zip file.

  • Take me a while to sort out. Use GoMusic free app to download into Surface RT tablet for offline use.

  • Does anyone listen to these music successfully through iPad? I keep getting the security error message!

  • Thanks OP.

  • Awesome share, thanks!

  • 200+ +ve votes but only 1 page of comments?

Forgive my ignorance (because smartphones and Google are tools of the Devil as far as I'm concerned), but if I fork out my Credit Card No. and CCV and whatnot does Google actually let you download the album as a set of .MP3's or does it just simply allow you streaming access to the album, via your Google account, and that's it?

    • +2

You have the option to download the album (138 MB on PC).
As soon as you get the album, click on "Listen", then options (3 vertical dots), then select "Download album".

"Are you sure that you want to download the selected song to your computer?
Each song can be downloaded 2 times on the web. This limit does not apply when you use the Music Manager desktop application to download files to your computer. Get Music Manager"

        Interesting..

  • Love every minute of it
