I don't have a large dog but I have a small dog and I like your site, will be using it next time!

    • I have a medium dog.

    • If you don't mind the short dating (and there seem to be differing opinions about whether Frontline expires or not – apparently an expiry date is an AU labelling requirement, but in the US it seems it's commonly sold with no expiration date), you can ration it out for a smaller dog: http://www.ehow.com/how_6865001_use-large-dogs-small-dog.htm…

The advise given there is really not all that good, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, because the little vials hold such a small amount of liquid, guessing the amount in the way they suggest could lead to problems - either underdosing, so ineffective, or overdosing, which could be harmful to your pet's health.

Secondly, an opened vial shouldn't be stored unsealed in the cupboard, or anywhere for that matter. The liquid evaporates, thus concentrating the dosage of what is left in the vial. Again, there's the risk of harmful overdosing next time around.

We tried frontline and all the other flea spot treatments and found that within 2 to 3 weeks we had scratching dogs again. We started using Revolution about 5 years ago and haven't seen a flea since. It's probably about the same price as Frontline, but also does heartworm and ear mites as well, so for those in places where heartworm treatment is necessary it works out far cheaper than dosing for fleas and heartworm separately …. and for those with dogs that incessantly scratch their ears, no more ear mite.

We DO split doses: it was suggested to us by local RSPCA. There is a figure readily available on the net about a set amount per kg of dog (I don't recall what it is at the moment) which we originally used, but weren't all that sure at times that it was enough, so simply went to dosing with the amount that is in the vials for the appropriately sized dog, ie, if the dog is 6 kg, giving the dose that is in the vial for 5-10kg, rather than the set amount that should be appropriate for 6 kg, if that makes sense without being too long-winded. It's easy enough to go to the Revolution site (or anyone else who sells it) to get the correct dosage for your dogs' weights by simply checking the various packs.

We went to the chemist and bought a 1ml syringe (with needle.) Once the vial is open, simply insert the needle into the tiny hole and draw up the appropriate amound of liquid.

You need to be aware that these are designed for single use only, so the first time you push it right down it will lock into position and be unusable. The way around this is, once you've drawn up the liquid, remove the needle from the end of the syringe. It will simply slide off the end. When finished, carefully rinse and cover the and place in the box (along with the rest of the syringe) so that you'll be able to locate it next time.

Anyway, once the liquid has been drawn up into the syringe and the needle removed, simply part the dog's hair between shoulder blades and apply as per normal, only using the syringe instead of the regular applicator. If there is any liquid remaining in the vial once you're done, simply wrap the end in foil to prevent evaporation, then store upright in the fridge until the following month. Just be sure to bring it to room temperature before using again the following month.

Particularly if you're going to be storing it from month to month, I wouldn't be buying something that was short-dated before you start. You've saved enough money by splitting doses that it's worthwhile spending a few extra $ to not buy something that is short-dated, and you know that the product will still be effective when you're still using it 12 to 18 months later.

  • Just checked through your site for Advantix 6pk over 25kg and you have Jumbo pets being the cheapest + postage. Cheaper at BudgetpetProducts by a whole 6 cents including postage. Is there a way to sort including postage as that is what usually tips the scales? Actually just checked and you have BudgetPets listed as 70.45 +postage when they include postage in prices

      Hi SirNed,

Unfortunately there is no sort to include postage at the moment. It's on my to-do list though.

      Cheers!
