Fuel Watch Posts

A few of the moderators discussed what should be done with deal posts that consist of the latest fuel prices.

Whilst we can see the usefulness of knowing the current best petrol prices, we didn't think that they were suitable as deals. We decided to start state-specific fuel watch threads in the Automotive forum.

So when is a fuel deal a deal?

If there is a special promotion, such as a bigger-than-usual supermarket discount, or a one-off promotion from a specific petrol station like this, then is qualifies as a deal. Such promotions usually have a specific discount, or a specific time frame for which the advertised price is valid, as opposed to just stating a price which can fluctuate at any time without warning.

If it's just the latest best fuel prices in an area, post in the state-specific fuel watch thread in the Automotive forum.

We now have one for WA

I think is a good idea, but would have been more useful before big discounts were banned.

  • While it might have some use for others, WA is perhaps the worst possible state for this type of thing. The State Government requires all fuel retailers to post their prices and they are displayed on a website (or app) every day, including tomorrow's prices after 2:30pm.
So, I guess I just don't see the point.

    • The WA post was originally posted as a deal that got over 10 votes, so it seems that some still find it useful?

  • I would imagine a lot of people wouldn't know where to find the fuel watch post and only check the main page. Seems a waste to keep a good deal hidden away.

    • The guideline came about because fuel prices tend to fluctuate without warning and may not stay valid for long after being posted.

We do allow fuel deals when there is a special promotion that is defined with either a specific discount or a defined time frame for which the special price is valid.

Will see what we can do to make users more aware of the fuel watch threads.
