Dick Smith 18.5" (47cm) HD LED LCD TV with DVD Player $98 - Click & Collect or Free Delivery

370

Was looking around for a smallish TV for the bedroom 15" PLUS. Found this comes with a DVD player built in.

I am not sure about the quality for DSE branded stuff but the size was good for me and could be good for others.

Was $158, now $98.

Click and Collect or Free Postage.

Great way to keep the wife in the kitchen :p

  • Looks good, I might pick one up.

  • Nice price OP. Anyone know any deals like this with NO DVD player inbuilt?

  • I bought a 31.5" version for the mum in law. The colours are slightly washed out, sound is rather tinny, but it's otherwise a solid, capable unit. Only weird thing for me is the on/ off indicator light. It's on when the unit's on - distracting and a tad irrelevant.

    • I think I may of got the same one as your mum in law, mine has quite a bit of screen bleeding which is quite annoying.

      • Can't say I've noticed that. If it's the same from different sources, I'd say it's worth taking it back to DSE.

I had this problem with a different TV.

A small piece of Black adhesive tape fixed the problem.

    • Not mine, so not too worried. Poor design choice. Must be a way to reverse the polarity. Now where did I put that sonic screwdriver?

A bit small for the bedroom perhaps, unless it is a tiny room and this screen will be mounted to your pillow/ headrest?

Could be useful for a small server monitor.

Seems like same DS deal from 9 months ago, & has been cheaper https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/96168
Same poor Screen Resolution 1366 x 768!! Not as if you would really notice on a screen this small. (That comment earned 9 negs last time!)

    • Same poor Screen Resolution 1366 x 768!!

Considering it has a higher ppi than a 55" 4k TV I think those 9 negs you got were pretty well justified.

      • Wasn't my post ;-)
Just commenting that resolution has not improved on this deal in 9 months for same price - so not a good deal.

As I said at this tiny size (& price) this resolution doesn't much matter.

Comparing viewing of this bargain basement unit with a top of the line 55" 4K … a brave move ;-)

        • If you're gonna use it as a computer monitor, it'll matter.
Using it as a tv shouldn't.

        • As I said about its use as a tv - it won't matter much!

Update: This unit was selling for $58 nearly 2 years back!! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/69227

At that price it only received 3+ & 1-.
Why all the interest nearly 2 years later?

Then there were bad DS reviews (poor tuner, poor viewing angles). My local DS manager said not to buy. I reviewed it back then as rubbish even for that low price.

DS changed stock numbers a while back, so no old reviews.
Of course they hopefully have improved the quality in that time.

  • 15"+ for the bedroom? Whoa, slow down cowboy.

  • Too small to be used as a monitor. Would like at least 20.5".

  • Bing lee have a 32 inch lcd for 199 dollars (Hitachi)

Checked this TV in store nearly 2 years ago - Old unit even then with very poor viewing angles - need to be pretty straight on & almost black screen when viewed from slightly below. So probably not good as kitchen TV when it is mounted above eye-line or you move off central axis.

DS manager said not to buy as unit was one of most returned. A problem is that DVDs sometimes can't be removed.

Probably screen was originally for low quality monitor. But at this size I would not even want it for that use, viewed from a very short distance straight on.

[For a small cheap TV, I opted for a Ozbargain 24" Samsung FHD monitor with HDMI for $38 more, & added a STBox I had. A good computer monitor + 3 year warranty was a nice bonus.
Everything operates by STB remote. Sammy goes into standby when STB is turned off. Could add DVD Player, but only 1 HDMI input at that price. Much better quality unit, but not everyone's choice.]

    • Of course they hopefully have improved the quality in that time.

Purchased a cheap AWA FHD 32" (Actually it is a 31.5") for $223 from BigW, to fit inside a cabinet for Mum. Actually it is quite good, very clear, clean and much better than expected and worth the money. There were 6 left at Karingal when I purchased 2 days ago. Four different sound/picture modes to select from. Only negative thing I could say is the EPG (program guide) only shows what is on at the time, not a week ahead like my Panasonic (different price range altogether). Has 2 HDMI and 2 analogue ins so no dramas; quite sufficient for most people's requirements. I personally don't like the inbuilt dvd players and would rather purchase these separately; dvd players are quite cheap to replace as needed, especially as the tech savvy are replacing them with blurays these days (although I am not one of them …)

  • Any 12V connector? ie: for use in a caravan? Would be a good deal for that sort of thing?

Thanks, turbo77. Looking for this for a period of time to replace my 2nd laptop to be a TV and DVD player on my home business desk.

Somewhat color wash out if you are not watch it straight from the front. But not too much. Viewable without problem even from the side of it. Right size for watching on your desk top and oddly used as the 2nd display when needed. Better bright/contrast and dynamic than the laptop monitor. Much more convenient than laptop + TV card solution or monitor + set top box + dvd player solutions.
