Finally, something sold by them that might actually do what they claim!

Although this is quite misleading; "Compatible with the following phones with no additional hardware:"

•Samsung Galaxy S3 (Charging card required)
•Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (Charging card required)
•Samsung Galaxy S4 (Charging card required)

If something else is required, then don't put them in the 'no additional hardware' list!

  • I have one of these for my S3 from eBay and they are very handy. S3 requires a charging card but the Nexus 5 will work with this.

Has anyone tried this with a Nexus 7?

These Nexus 4 reports are a bit worrying:

Yes, works fine on the 2013 Nexus 7. The main issue is positioning the tablet on the charger so the charging coil aligns with the coil on the Nexus 7. The red LED on the Kogan charger will light up when they're in position.

      • I have this sitting in front of me - works a treat, good little charger. I put my tablet horizontally across the charger so the length of the charger goes the width of the tablet; it is easier to place and you can see the charge light too.

  • Will this work with Nexus 4?

    • Yes it should,

My S3 gets pretty hot and as reported in the forum it is because the sticker sits on top of the battery so all the heat goes there before being moved to the battery. If that makes sense

      • +2

Qi charger nuked the battery on my nexus 4. Not the kogan one but a generic third party one. After using the charger for a while my battery got super hot. After that it no longer held charge and was pretty much dead. Managed to RMA my phone no problem but wont try qi chargers again.

Honestly they don't add much value….

  • Just after I posted I saw eug's post and link. Still a little undecided at this stage

  • Good price as this is probably one of the few items Kogan didn't increase the prices for the free shipping. Its price has in fact been decreased.

    • They incorporated the shipping cost to the phone adapter coil thingo's this afternoon, while I was deciding whether or not to go wireless. Guess they made the decision for me.

  • I recently ordered this after a friends recommendation with his N5: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=151158…

$5 cheaper from an Aussie eBay seller. No idea of the quality difference. (EDIT: Sorry $3.20 after shipping)

  • Plug the mat into a USB source or plug the phone into a USB source…….hmmm.

Sorry, I still can't see past the gimmick factor with these charging mats. And yes I do have devices supporting wireless charging.

    • +3

Not sure about you but I pick up my phone multiple times a day.

By having a mat I don't have to put additional wear and tear on the USB port of my phone, which on my N5 is a tight fit. The idea being is you essentially leave the mat plugged in.

Sorry, I still can't see past the gimmick factor with these charging mats.

You evidently don't use your phone a lot while sitting at a desk. Some people like having a full charge at the end of a work day so they can party hard and still be able to call a taxi at the end. Simply putting your phone down on a pad is much more convenient than plugging a usb cable in 20-30 times a day.

It also eliminates connector wear-and-tear as downforce mentioned.

      • Does the charging mat automatically power off when it's not charging any phone? Or do you have to manually pull the usb plug from power source after every charge?

        • It's just like a normal charger - you can leave it plugged in to the wall. If there's no phone on top of it, it can't charge anything, so it just sits there until it detects a phone, after which it turns up the juice.

  • I might have bought this in white to go with my Nokia 1520, also this one doesn't seem to have a charging status as often with other pads they can loose connection if the phone gets moved and once the phones screen turns off you won't know if its charging.

but charging with cable means you still can use it to make a phone call.
if you put on this pad you cant. unless you bring the phone and the pad close to your ear!
    - note: im talking when the battery really really flat and you need charge to keep the phone on.

    • +9

If you're THAT desperate to make a call right when your battery is flat, and you don't have a Bluetooth earpiece, just unplug the micro USB cable from the mat and plug it into your phone.

        This man deserves an award.

  • Awesome now I can have one at work!

    • got one with an s3 card (save $4 free ship) total $34

  • I hope they start getting these at public restaurants and outlets, eg McDonalds.

  • Will it work on nexus 5 and spigen ultra slim hard case.

    This case — http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=261320193995

    Thanks fellas.

    • I've got a Metrans Qi Charger and it works with that case.

Not sure about this Kogan charger but I hope it does too!

  • +3

Have been using this for about a month now with my Nexus 5 - works really well no problems at all

My N5 is in a thickish case FYI

    • Thanks for confirming mate. Just ordered 2, one for home and one for work.

  • thanks for replying. Ordered one.

  • I've been eyeing these off for weeks as a part Christmas present - the price drop means I can buy one for myself too :) here's hoping it arrives before Christmas.

    • Kogan takes a couple of weeks. You won't see them until January gizmo.

      • +1

Am I incorrect? Is Kogan now getting things to people in less than two weeks?

  • Thanks, at $19 delivered I just ordered one of these. Can't really go wrong.

Do these units beep or light up obtrusively?

    • +1

There is a single light on the front that indicates if it is charging (red) or charged (blue). It's pretty bright, but you're going to want to be able to see it otherwise you have to turn your phone screen on to see if it's charging.

  • Purchased one for my N5, thanks for the details tg786!

  • +1

Given the reports that people find their phone's battery almost fried, why are people still buying this, even at a cheap price?

I was tempted to get one but wouldn't want to kill my Nexus 4's internal battery.

Is the Kogan charger from a known OEM? Are the reviews generally terrible regarding the overly-hot nature of the charger?

The LG charger might be a better bet, at a higher price, if it keeps the phone cooler.

    • +2

If you have a Nexus 5 the official LG/Nexus charger is much better but more expensive. It'll position the phone in place with magnets, and it sticks to your desk. The Kogan charger works ok most of the time for my (on Nexus 4, 5 and 7) but occasionally won't charge overnight very well.

  • Ugh so I just purchased Nexus 5, at this price it is really tempting.
To buy or not, OzBargainers? Does it work with Nexus 5 without having to purchase the charging card?

    • yes it does

  • Nice, just received mine (perfect time for Xmas self-present hehe) and start charging my nexus 4

  • i received mine too yesterday. does a nifty job of charging both nexus 5 and nexus 7, both having plastic covers.

charging times are same as charging with cable.
