Instapaper used to be brilliant, but now it's under new management, and they're currently "fixing" everything good about it. They've made the website slower and uglier, and the IOS client has gained some new bugs.

It's still worth grabbing for free, though.

    • Oh, I strongly disagree. The website was never updated for years until Betaworks took over. The iOS app has also been updated very regularly ever since they took over. Had it still been with Marco Arment, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been updated for iOS 7 yet by now.

  • why they still have the premium subscription if it was a paid apps?

      They were web subscription features.

In addition to the App of the Week, we’re giving away a free 2-month Instapaper subscription to all new users through the end of the year. That means new users get instant access to subscriber-only features like search, third-party API integrations, and better “Send to Kindle” functionality.

      • I see, thanks for the subscription info.

How does it compare to Pocket, which has been free since renamed from Read It Later?

    • I'd choose Pocket any day over Instapaper. Easy to use, cleaner UI and regularly updated. Plus the iCloud sync can be particularly useful if you want to view it on your desktop for later (the desktop version is free too https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/pocket/id568494494?mt=12)

    • I use Pocket which is better. We get carried away on seeing discounts. :)

    • Pocket is good for all kinds of web pages, including videos. Instapaper is very good at reading, but not very at videos. Instapaper has really nice typography, page turning, article sorting, dark mode, background download, etc.

I would try both if I were you. I've been an Instapaper user for 4 years.

      • I have never tried Instapaper because I couldn't stand Marco :) Now he's gone maybe I'll take a look.

        • Why's that?

        • There are Apple users. There are Apple fanboys. And then there is Marco Arment (and maybe John Gruber).

    • Pocket is better than Instapaper.

Instapaper suffers from Not Knowing What Exactly It Wants To Be.

When Marco (the creator of Instapaper) was running it it had a single purpose - save articles for later reading. It was a dead simple web site that ran on every platform because it was so simple. I was a subscriber to this service ($12/year, it was fantastic as it did one thing and one thing well).

Then Marco sold it to Betaworks who seem to think that it needs to be Pocket in order to attract a larger user base. So it's now a wannabe Pocket that isn't as good as Pocket.

I had a long conversation with the Betaworks "community manager" about what was wrong with Instapaper today and whilst she paid me much lip service the net result is they did exactly nothing with my feedback.

tl;dr, use Pocket if you want what Instapaper is trying to be.

If you want a save for later reading similar to what Instapaper used to be, consider pinboard.in.

  • Great that it's free and I downloaded but I much prefer Pocket. A much nicer interface and I find pocket renders pages better.

Still, free is free and who knows? Maybe a future update will make it awesome!
