These are HORRIBLE, avoid them like the plague! Constant paper jams. The print output looks great, but after two weeks started getting daily paper jams which are extremely difficult to clear. After clearing paper jams three or four times a day, the thing packed up with a permament paper jam I can't clear. I'd been given it as a gift and had no receipt so couldn't return it or have it serviced under warranty, but I read many reviews saying other people had them serviced only to have them jam again within days.

I took it apart once to clear a particularly bad jam, the thing takes about an hour to disassemble and reassemble, and is very tedious. It's not designed to be easily serviceable. Blew it out with compressed air, cleaned every surface, did everything possible to make sure it wouldn't jam again. It lasted three days and jammed again.

DON'T BUY! On paper it sounds like a great machine. Magazine reviews will give it a good review because they only test things for a week or so. But user reviews are what counts, and for most it's a failure.

EDIT: Forgot to add that the photocopier/scanner is also hopeless, it cuts off the edges of pages to about 5mm-7mm depending on the side. Also after a few months oil starts to accumulate on the scanner glass at one side, so scanning becomes gradually more and more blurry over time. VERY difficult to take apart and clean. Another reason to avoid it.

    • You should be a professional printer reviewer!! Sounds like a lot of work to maintain.
I just thought it was a good deal for the price, so i posted it up

I suppose everyone has their own opinion - and it is always those with a bad experience with the loudest voice. But to balance yours, mine has been working well for 3/4 (I think) years or so. Supported 3 uni students, so it got a fair use. If I recall correctly (been a while) you can reduce the scan margin to 2mm on all sides, so might be worth giving that a go.

Only issue was no wireless or ADF.
It was the cheapest colour multifunction laser at the time…

I do not believe that this is correct.

You can call Fuji/Xerox support and supply them with the printer's serial number. If in warranty they will send you a replacement printer, and arrange for a carrier to pick your original printer at a convenient time/date.

      • How will they know if it's in warranty if the purchase wasn't registered with Fuji/Xerox and there's no receipt available?

        • They know when it was sold wholesale.
Computer gear has a fast turnover, and a lot of suppliers work that way.

        • They could give some leeway. I never need proof of purchase when I send hard disks in for a warranty replacement.

As I wrote in my comment - "supply them with the printer's serial number". This is what I did with my mono Fuji/Xerox.

      • I can try that next time, if I ever encounter another faulty Fuji Xerox printer. The printer was already nearly two years old when first opened, as it was purchased by somebody who suddenly had to move interstate, so they just left it in storage. They found out I needed a printer so arranged for me to collect it. It was fine for three weeks then started playing up, and had its first 'permanent' (requiring taking apart) jam after about six months. Standard warranty is one year. I know I could have argued with them about statutory warranties etc but without a receipt, and after reading about so many people who had the printer serviced or replaced two or three times only to have it jam up again, I didn't bother with all the hassle.

I got one last time for $159 from MSY.

      good print quality yes.

      paper jams. frequent.
I pop up the top, and it seems to resolve the problem. just a hassle everytime.

I use it for uni work. so the cheaper the better. and this printer is good in that sense.

I totally agree I hate mine. It's currently disconnected sitting gathering dust.

Had mine for 2 years. No problems so far. I think people who have problems use it for business. For personal use it's great been scanning and printing quite a bit for my students.

    • Had mine for 2 years. No problems so far.

I understand that some do not set the paper size correctly, and that this can lead to paper jamming.

      • @A3Australia If paper size is incorrect (ie trying to print Letter to A4) it simply will not print and the job needs to be cancelled. It won't lead to a jam.

There are many reports of this being a problem - at least for the 105b.

        • The CP105B and M105B printers are totally different to the CM105B. The way different printer models jam affects the way the paper can (or cannot) be removed. Sometimes the printer and multi-function versions of something with the same number are quite different in internal operation, despite looking very similar. If a paper jam happens in a basic printer, often the top cover can be removed to easily retrieve the jammed paper. In a multifunction unit, the scanner sits on top and can't be lifted high enough to afford easy access.

When there's a jam inside the CM205B the jam happens deep inside the unit, where the jammed paper can't be reached. You need to very slowly and gently pull the paper out, as it curls up on itself. If you're lucky there will be a few centimetres of paper poking out that you can grasp and pull through. If unlucky, it tears as you're pulling it, jamming up inside the machine. Or it never comes out at all, then you need to use tweezers to try to grab it. If it's particularly bad, the paper is so jammed up it's completely inaccessible, and the entire unit needs to be taken apart.

The CM205B also gets 'phantom' jams all the time, that might be what you're referring to. Quite often the printer stops printing if you try to do more than five pages at a time and says 'paper jam' but simply opening then closing the lid makes it start printing again. Sometimes it prints the page again, thinking it jammed the first time when if fact it didn't so you have to check everything that comes out for duplicates or triplicates. When you've been up all night finishing an assignment then the damn printer keeps jamming and you have to babysit it for an hour opening and closing the lid just to print the last twenty pages, when you should be sleeping, then on the second-to-last page need to try to retrieve a crumpled page that really did properly jam with tweezers, you'll really wish you spent an extra $20 or $50 on a different brand.

I should mention jams all happened with Fuji Xerox paper bought from OfficeWorks. It's their own brand of paper, so it should work.

This is my current printer (for last 18 months or so). It works great - very reliable. Note that I very rarely use the colour feature - my experience is almost exclusively with its black and white printing function.

I use these guys for toner refills.

  • anyone know any good options for what to get instead of this?

    • Not a laser, but Epson Workforce Pro 4530 claims to be a similar (or less) per page cost?? Moved house and bought the Epson (used to own the CM205B, which I left for the parents) for around $170 with cash back. Aimed at small business, I barely use it but its a champ so far. Scanning and printing wirelessly. No jams so far (just under a year)

I have this unit. Used it couple of time. Never had problem with it. Easy to setup, easy to config.
Also brought it from Officeworks in Oct for much more.
If you are not a heavy user and often leave printer untouched for days. Then this will be a good option.

  • Anyone know of cheap laser printer with cheap running costs?

    • Cheap running costs usually depend on whether you use the original toner cartridges or the refills - makes a huge difference in cost.

      • Non original trustworthy ?

        • Been using non original on this machine for about 1 year so far so good.

  • I have the wireless version of this printer and it is great. Not ideal for a busy business because the toner (if you get original) is expensive but for around the home it is great. Only had one jam in the year I have had it. And that was due to a piece of paper which was creased.
