YMMV but the staff at DSE George St, Sydney are telling me that it is currently actually a $30 DSE gift-card, which makes this a pretty good deal imo. I purchased one in response to this news and received a $30 DSE gift card!

    price in title

    • indeed! corrected with thanks!

  • What is this magic device? Is it a gimmick or something actually worth getting? I usually push my snooze button 8 times before getting up so this interests me..

      • What is this wizardry? Data Transfer and charging through the audio jack. I didn't think that was possible :S

        • I saw someone do it over the weekend, and said 'NO WAY' - but it works! It doesn't charge that way, but you can't have everything.

          (it charges via mini-usb)

Nah. I have one. It charges through the audiojack (special connector to standard usb).

    • basically it tracks your movements so that it wakes you up at the end of a sleep cycle so you will feel more awake and refreshed. If a regular alarm goes off in the middle of a sleep cycle you can feel sluggish and tired still. I don't have a jawbone up but use sleepbot (free android app) and can vouch it is effective.

  • newest version up 24?

    • I can check on the one I bought. Can I tell without opening it? There's a bar-code on the bottom - model JBR52s-MD-AU. Does that help?

  • It's not wireless, so you need to keep plugging it in to upload your data - and the more effort you need to go to to use it, the less likely it is that you will use it. Also, the competitors (Fitbit's various models, maybe Withings) are wireless and cheaper.

This does have an "idle alarm", which will get you moving if you've been too still for too long - but it uses arm (not core) movement, so just scratching yourself will probably reset the timer.

    • It depends what you want it for. If you want the convenience of always-on real-time, then this isn't the device for you. From my research I found the FitBit to suit better, at $20 cheaper.

The big BUT though is the battery life. FitBit will last 1/3 as long at best.

The UP device has an easy sync by way of the 3.5mm jack built into it that goes into your iphone speaker socket - instant detect and sync done - takes 5 seconds. Unsure about Android support (anyone?).

I love the idea of the personal alarm and idle alarm - sounds great! I haven't opened it yet - Xmas present!

"easy sync by way of the 3.5mm jack built into it that goes into your iphone speaker socket"

Fitbit syncs with bluetooth = easier

Also Fitbit Force due out soon

        • Sure it's easier, but the battery runs out 3 times as fast if not more. Horses for courses I guess.

      • I get about six days battery life out of my Fitbit One. Maybe longer; I've never run it flat.

Plus, it has a silent (personal) alarm, and it's only about $100 - $90 on sale.

    • So what model would you suggest for me that has wireless syncing to smartphone, decent battery life, and monitors sleep cycles so can wake me up at the end of the sleep cycle so i don't feel like DEATH every morning?

      • I'm not sure any fit that bill entirely. One feature negates the other (decent battery life vs wireless sync)… Certainly the Jawbone wakes you up at end of sleep cycle (ie wake by 6:30am, you might wake up at 6:23, based on your own cycle).

Opening up to anyone with experience/suggestions on other devices, although that might be more suited to the forums.

Most reviews I have read about all fitness bands say they are at most a gimmick. Until they actually make something that works properly and is of some use I would save my money.

  • I've got one… only used it for 1 month - i couldnt get use to it when i went to bed with the band on :( so it's just sitting at home. Battery life is quite good with one full charge.

    • ebay it! They hold their value pretty well, from my limited searching there…

  • Get a pebble it wakes you up via vibration and search their apps website for the app to track your sleep patterns.

  • Looks like this is cheap as Jawbone have just released the Up24 - still a wristband, now (finally!) with Bluetooth.

    • US$150 RRP that UP24 definitely rocks. Battery life down from 10 to 7 days. Such is life for realtime sync. Can't wait to get one in AUS. :) Thanks jong for the heads-up. Today's purchase is for my wife's present ;)
