  • What mobile device that is not a laptop takes ssds?

    • Surface's take mSATA, one of which is listed above.

      • Don't think you really want to attempt upgrading a Surface…

      • Quite alot of ultrabooks use mSATA, however you need to make sure the length fits your Ultrabook, as some use longer ones and some use shorter ones.

  • How does this compare to the 840 EVO? I guess you lose the migration software too.

    • The 840 Evo is Samsungs current model consumer SSD, which superceded the Samsung 840.

The Samsung PM841 is not normally available through retail channels. It is sold to OEM's and system builders. You will find it many brand name laptops and mobile devices.

    • I forgot to respond to your comment regarding migration tools.

There are loads of free and open source tools which are easy to use and often more powerful than the simple ones provided with retail SSD's

Parted Magic - my favourite - includes the very powerful Clonezilla and heaps of other handy utilities

Clonezilla Live - if you just want a good disk cloner

    Samsung 21 nm MLC NAND • 520 MB/sec Read, 120 MB/sec Write •

That's a pretty bad write rate, in fact my Seagate 3Tb mechanical drive writes at that rate. Looks like Evo's kill these things.

Reads and write speeds shouldn't be taken out of context. To be fair, your comment should also include the size of the SSD you are comparing to.

In the real world, any time you replace a mechanical drive with an SSD, even in the smaller size, there is a dramatic improvement in performance. That's because most of the time data is being read from the drive (opening applications, booting up).

In addition, SSD's in the smaller 128GB sizes always have comparably lower write speeds than the larger sizes (256GB, 512GB)

  • This is OEM package so do I have to buy adapter for disk to be sitting on 3.5" bay of desktop

    • Yes, but they are really cheap to buy - around $4-$5 from MSY depending whether you want a plastic or metal one

      • Don't buy the cheap one from MSY.

You'll get alignment issues with that. I had to drill bigger holes in it in order to be able to mount an SSD into the bracket and even then it's a bit loose.

Buy the OCZ one they sell for a few bucks more.

        • The Silverstone brackets are also very good. They are the exact same dimensions as a 3.5-inch drive, and also have room for 2 drives in the same bracket. Very nicely finished and painted.

Write speed and cost is not worth it when evo drives same cost

    • -1

Please quote your source if you find the Evo drives at the same cost. Share the bargains!

          LoL! (shakes hand)

Yes, the evo's crap on these for write speeds.

Sounds to me like the rep is unloading OEM unofficial channel gear, and probably breaching Samsung's OEM policy or distribution channel guidelines.

        • you guys are tough - a few more dollars has been squeezed out of the 128GB price, and the deal updated.

        • +4

Your comment has no basis in fact, and is damaging.

We obtain our OEM Samsung gear through the only official distribution channel in Australia, with authorisation for sale throughout the Asia Pacific.

  • any plans on a larger size msata

    • +1

Larger sized mSATA drives are here in the newer Samsung PM851 model, all the way up to 512GB:

      http://www.ramcity.com.au/upgrade/data-storage/internal-soli…

    • The Samsung Msata SSD's are great, I purchased a 512Gb model earlier this year when they were just released. The pricing has also reduced significantly since my purchase (around $80). If you need a larger Msata SSD the Samsung at Ram city is the only place in Australia (world?) that has been able to get stock.

  • Pricing is very nice, MSATA especially.

I have dealt with Ram City in the past, can highly recommend them!!

  • Something to think about is warranty. I had a little look around and came across post where a person contacted Samsung re warranty and was told that because it was not oem product that warranty isn't covered by Samsung.

Maybe the rep could comment on this subject.

    • +1

You are absolutely correct on that point. Samsung will not provide you with a warranty directly for OEM equipment - just as they would not warrant the Samsung drive in your Dell or Toshiba laptop.

RamCity provides the warranty in this case - 2 years. Stated in the deal description and on our website.

      • Cheers rep, must of missed that part.

        • +1

Thanks for asking though. I've bolded the warranty details in the deal description so it's much clearer now.

        • +2

You didn't miss it, it wasn't there - check the revisions.

The only mention of warranty was "Warranty: 2 Years", the additional "All drives come with a 2-year replacement warranty from RamCity" was only just added.

        • Fair comment - should have been clearer regarding that from the get-go.

  • Too bad Asus use a proprietary connector in their UX31 series Ultrabooks else I would have snapped up a 256GB mSata SSD…

  • Hi im a little confused, so is all the drive listed here msata or just the 128gb version?
Im interested in 256gb, however its not listed as Msata. If its not msata then it not really a bargain, consider other similar ssd deals around of late for 256gb drives.

  • Why only 2 years warranty? Most give 3 years.

    • Samsung drives are very good quality, and in our experience selling several different brands, they have the lowest return rate. The onus is on RamCity to provide the warranty for these PM841 drives, as they are a clearance item.

If you are looking for a longer warranty, then consider the Samsung 840 Pro (5 years), or the 840 Evo (3 years).

      • Seems like you don't have warranty with Samsung on these. So if the unit gets returned to you for RMA, what do you do? Repair it yourself? Refund?

        • In this instance we would replace the product out of our own stock, or if we no longer had any for sale, we would work out something with the customer: either an equivalent product or credit/refund.
