Mechanical keyboards: Which one to get?

Hi all, I've never tried a mechanical keyboard, but I keep hearing that they're easier and faster to type on. I just want something minimalistic and cheap.

What can people recommend I buy?

Thanks!

  • Go to a comp store and test out the key switches that you like, as each person is different

  • Assuming you want a mechanical keyboard for gaming, you can try and have a look at some of the insight on this thread

  • Not sure mechanical keyboards come in cheap.

I have the Das Keyboard Model S Ultimate, which I love. Very solid piece of equipment that is great to type on. I'm not sure it has made my typing any faster.. It has ruined me for non-mechanical keyboards though.

It uses the MX Brown switches, which I'll admit don't feel as nice as the MX Blue's I've used on the Blackwidow. But the decreased noise won it over for me and I don't regret it. The blank keys are kinda cool too..

  • Perhaps reading and replying to your previous keyboard thread would be a start, rather than spamming…

  • if you are serious corsair k90, reviews seem good.

Depends what switches you want (blue, black, etc) and then whether you want a fullsize or tenkeyless design.

After that, they're all more-or-less the same between brands. I generally avoid the wigged out 'gamer' keyboards like Razer since they look rather tacky. Leopold, Das, Zowie and Ducky are quite well regarded.

Recently bought a Filco Majestouch. I choose brown mainly because its a bit quieter. Feels much better typing than my old rubber domed keyboard.

Some Ducky Keyboards also have volume control keys and a switch to disable the Windows Key. Makes it easier if you game without going over the top like the razer.

If used in a office environment: Mechanical keyboards can also be modified with rubber o-rings if you are concerned about the noise. Das also make a keyboard, I think the model s silent.

There are a few cheaper ones for round about 60 or 80 dollars (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/105071) but they don't review as well. They probably are a improvement over rubber domes anyway.

As you're looking at more premium keyboards you could also look at:-

    • Had a Unicomp before (model M design). Those are loud, and definitely not unbreakable. My spacekey is borked and I'm also looking at a good new keyboard mainly for typing.

  • Oh, no I don't want a gaming mechanical keyboard. Just a simple mechanical keyboard would be great!

  • Ihfree where did you pick your filco up from? Mind me asking how much too?

    • About $180 delivered iirc from Auspcmarket. Mainly choose that over the Das Keyboard as I don't like the glossy finish.

  • $180 is way too much for me to pay.

A basic one for less than $100 would be great!
