Best keyboard for Gamer.

Any advice appreciated on a suitable keyboard for teenage PC gamers.
We have been through several in the last 12 months, some better than others, Logitech generally good, Microsoft not so good? thanks.

  • On what sort of budget? Mechanical is the way to go, especially if they are breaking at an appreciable rate.

  • Get the razer black widow ultimate or logitech g710 plus. Both are amazing keyboards abliet a little pricey.

  • Like the above, beyond the fact that they're more durable, mechanical keyboards are more responsive and receptive to when each button is pressed. That's what makes them theoretically better than your conventional office keyboard.

It's also quite loud when you type on it, so be wary of that… or maybe that's why you'd want it - so your son's keeping in line and not staying up too late to game :P

    • "It's also quite loud when you type on it, so be wary of that…"

Only if you buy loud mechanical keyboard switches like Cherry Blue. Linkstate read up on Cherry switches here:

You'll most likely want Cherry Red switches in your gaming keyboard. I've got a few friends with Ducky Cherry Red keyboard and they love them, though any decent branded keyboard carrying Cherry Red will do you justice.

  • microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse 5000 …had it for a year , cost me like $8 from microsofts cash back offer from matching another store. RRP atm is $99~ its so goood

You could try the Mwave mechanical keyboard for $49. It uses cherry black switches.

    This keyboard is a re-branded IROCKS KR-6251.

  • After having had the same sort of trouble, and after much research… look at the "Steelseries" keyboards, around $180.00 posted on line, but these will outlast the others.
I am more than happy with my model for gaming

I got the cheapest Microsoft. Works well and feels better made then the cheapest Logitech.

If I need a new keyboard it will be Microsoft.

  • Another Mechanical keyboard fan here, I picked up a Ducky Shine 2 earlier this year and unfortunately every other keyboard I use I compare to this.

Personally I love the simplistic design of the Ducky keyboard as well as the choices in switch colours and backlight colours. Also if somebody broke into your house this could double as a club as it weighs a ton!

  • thanks for the feedback, will do some research on suggestions made.

  • I highly recommend Logitech over Razer from personal experience.
I've had 2 razer headsets, 1 mouse, 1 keyboard. They all died within 1 year.

Aivia osmium backlit mechanical keyboard with USB 3.

    • Im using one of these and loving mine

  • What abou the newest edition of the G19 from logitech? It's not that big improvement but its one of the most durable out there because I still rock with the old one ;).
You can have an idea of how big the improvements are below.

  • I'm loving how everyone is naming a whole bunch of brands and ignoring the one most important fact when anyone buys a keyboard or mouse - Personal preference and comfort.

To the OP: aside from a bunch of people here giving you a few keyboard names to research, it's more or less useless to consider people's opinions when it comes to keyboards or mice since the opinion is mostly "its durable and feels great!". You'll find this is the case written about every single mouse and keyboard out there, so, not very helpful.

Please go to a site like arc.com.au , itestate.com.au , pccasegear.com (most recommended). Set a price range for how much you'd be willing to pay, then look at what's in your price range. Do a bunch of research on the keyboards around and take a look at the different features each one offers, different types of keyboards will appeal to different types of people. Don't think less of any brand just due to a name, for example microsoft, just because they're microsoft.

Also keep in mind, companies love to label keyboards as "gamer" keyboards for no particular reason. There is no real advantage any keyboard will give you in a game against anyone else, it's a stupid title added to the product so they can make it seem prestigious. Simply find a keyboard that you like the look of, you think would feel comfortable, and has any additional features you're looking for.

Features to keep in mind are things like whether the keys are backlit or not, also mechanical keyboard or not (completely preference). Some keyboards have mini-lcd's inbuilt to display random things like current songs playing, and also display ingame stats, which can be useful to some gamers. Other people love customizable lighting on their keyboards, so the ability to make the backlights blue.. or red.. or green.. or pink etc.

You're the only one that knows what kind of preference you're after. Be free. Run off into the wild, last unicorn.

Bit late on the reply but this is wrong.

Gamer keyboards are generally keyboards that can press certain buttons simultaneously without locking up.

For example running diagonally forward and right while crouching in Battlefield 3.

Many keyboards can't do certain commands, thats what gamer keyboards are for, some gamer keyboards are better then others.

      • Sorry but my random 4-5 yr old dell 5$ keyboard that i have sitting around that i use for plugging in to test machines and servers was recently used for about 2-3 weeks on a gaming computer playing a variety of games.

Never did my keyboard lock up.

Anti-ghosting (the term you're looking for) is extremely old and is used in so many keyboards by default these days.

You probably just didn't use anything that required it…

Its quite well known that basic logitech/microsoft keyboards have this problem.

        • you usually won't notice it unless you come across the combination that causes a lock up. Older PS2 keyboards don't seem to suffer as much as they are N-Key Roll Over (NKRO). If your 5yr old Dell PS2 or USB? I'm guessing PS2

So go ahead neg this comment.

Gamer keyboards generally have anti-ghosting and higher KRO rates (USB boards don't really have NKRO) and they tend to have programmable macro keys…along with the cosmetics. In terms of value, most of them are not great value.

Sadly though, most mechanical boards are labelled "gamer" and I will always pick up a mechanical over a rubber dome if they are at the same price, just the feel of a mechanical is so much nicer (personal preference)
