I took 10 flights with them this year (incl twice between KL and Sydney) and never had any problems! They're cheap but for a budget airline pretty good.

Lots of people have complained about flight cancellations but I never experienced it. I would def fly with them again.

    • +41

Sounds like typical Flight Centre BS to me. Its only because they don't sell their flights that they sprout such rubbish

    • +13

IV done many flights in se Asian and Sydney to KL and did not have any issues. Seats are slightly smaller than normal but for the price, can't complain.

    • +26

      Air Asia cheap -yes
      Flight Centre cheap - no
      Problems with Air Asia -no
Problems with Flight Centre - yes

From experience ! Over 30 flights with Air Asia 2 dealings with Flight Centre

    • +5

I have flown with AirAsia for more than 4 years.
      No delay. No any issues.

    • +10

Fair enough :) Like I said, not from my experience, just what I've been told. Please ignore my post! :)

      • +2

Well problems are something of the past for air asia. As a malaysian I can say that air asia used to be notorious with their delays, but that was 5-10 years back. Also stewardess use to be rude and charge exorbitant exchange rates when purchasing items when not paid in malaysian ringgit, but there is now a fix prices at foreign currencies.

        • Thanks for the heads up. My first flight with Air Asia was awful. They left me in a seat where the number of seats went from two to one. After hitting me with the trolley 3 times (ie. the trolley had to go around a bend), I asked if they could move me. The said "sorry, against policy". Yet, 5 minutes later, they moved a Malaysian customer who wanted to see the TV a little better.

That was my one and only bad experience with Air Asia. Since then, they've always been very good.

    • My experience so far:

      ~ 20 flights with AirAsia
      - Only one cancellation, which resulted in staying overnight in KL. Travel insurance paid for the hotel and AirAsia insurance gave me back most of the money I paid for the ticket.
      - The rest - no problems at all

Considering the price difference between "normal" and budget airlines I would definitely prefer AirAsia again over Qantas for example. For me (so far) the savings are thousands of $$$.

The deals are good, if you can plan in advance $200 for those destinations is almost as good as it gets.

    • i think scoot is better to be honest for budget airline, but yeah never had an issue with air asia before (not even delays) and i used to fly with them before scoot came along

      • +2

Food is much better on Airasia than Scoot.

        • yeah that i agree, but i found seat comfort is more important than food.

    • +2

how the hell would she know? she dosnt get paid a commission from them so wouldnt have a clue what shes talking about.

    • If you have the money, sure go for a premium airline but otherwise budget airlines are perfect for students and young travelers.

    • I don't mind Air Asia as a budget international airline. The meals are also a lot cheaper compared to say Jetstar which makes the flight even more cost effective.

    • I've also never had any problems either. Yes, the seats are alot smaller than a 'normal' airlines, which is waht everyone seems to complain about. But hey, for the price you pay I aint complaining, and I'm a tall 6 footer, so I know best. i can still 'sit' , jsut not stretch out/relax fully, but hey, for constant perth-> kl trips etc, what's 5 hours for $100-400 less (depending what time of yr etc). Discounts used to be alot better before they were popular, back 4-6 years ago.

      • One budget I hate and always hear/had issues is tiger though. THAT, you should avoid. Virgin blue on the other handis pleasant for a budget. always used it for interestate per-> melb —> syd etc flights.

excellent sale, you can get return SYD-KL for $280

damn nice … I've already booked a few trips for next year :)

  • +1

Just returned from Thailand. Flew airasia syd-K/L then K/L-Bangkok same on the return leg. They were fantastic my daughter got sick K/L-Bangkok and I couldn't speak more highly of the staff. 4 flights in 2wks and not 1 delay so I would def fly with them again

  • +2

Flew with Air Asia to Osaka return in Oct this year, no problems at all.
I opted for no food (you can buy onboard if you change your mind) and although it was my first time with them, I have no regrets at all.
It costed me $700 all up. I arrived half a day later than my friend.
He flew with Cathay Pacific for $1500 return including meals. Paid twice the price but shorter transfer time in between.
IMO, if you have half a day(7 hours to be precise) to burn in KL, you can really save yourself some money.

    • +1

I opted for no food (you can buy onboard if you change your mind) and although it was my first time with them, I have no regrets at all.

Flew Syd - KL a few weeks ago with pre-ordered food (Nasi Lemak). Food turned up lukewarm at best with missing condiments. On the return leg, did not pre-order and bought a meal (lasagne) on board (AUD 1 dearer, and didn't come with bottle of water), and it was piping hot. I suspect they pre-heat the pre-ordered meals first and leave them lying around. Not sure if others have had this experience with pre-booked meals - mine seem to always turn up lukewarm.

(Have flown AirAsia internationally 6 times or so since they started flying to Sydney)

  • AirAsia seats are really small and I'm a larger dude and barely fit in there, that being said, they have always been good to me price wise and also on time (95% of the time)

last trip my partner however said she'd never fly AirAsia again,

    • yeah that's what i found. i always find the fare which are so cheap that getting the extra leg room seat (plus 30kg luggage) is still cheaper than other airlines

that's why i fly with scoot these days as i dont have to get those seats without getting squashed for 7-8 hours

  • Check your dates. I found cheap flights in January 2014. About $310 return to KUL.

    • +1

Cheapest you'll get, but the sale doesn't affect January 2014. It's also a peak flight season during January as well because of the Chinese New Year. Managed to score a flight for the same price, and a return flight a month later for $120 a week ago. Didn't know of any sales and I did a check just then, the price jumped back to $280.

      • +1

I even managed to get a flight from KL to Mel for $159 on 30/12! Peakest time it can be! and still at $159 bargain!

  • I assume it is only selected dates or/and selected airports, as Adelaide-KL return in July is AU$720.

  • +1

$390 return from GC to BKK. As the missus would say "very cheap"…

  • +1

Although not entirely relevant to this deal (departure dates different), I had booked for a return SYD-KUL in late Jan-mid Feb 2014 (Chinese New Year period) during the buy 2 for 1 promotion and paid about $450 per person.
Just checked the same dates and it's now $350 return without needing to buy two.

Remind me to be patient with Air Asia promotions. No need to jump in and buy so far in advance! They always have sales.

Another tip: Consider buying two one-ways.
    SYD-KUL - you'll be charged AUD
    KUL-SYD - you'll be charged MYR - pay with 28 degrees.
For the date I looked at, KUL-SYD it would've been $171 AUD.
If you bought them separately, it would have been 359MYR which is about $121AUD.
    $50 saving just like that.

  • None of the dates available for me in this sale seem to be very cheap at all. We want to fly to Indonesia next Christmas to visit family but it just seems normal price to me (~$550 return from Perth to Bali).

I used Air Asia's last sale to get Jetstar to pricematch the same route in May 2014. $233.20 per pax return with 20kg baggage on the way over and 40kg on the way back, also included is our chosen seats.

    That's what I call a bargain.

edit: aaaaaaaand, I just logged in to check my booking on the Jetstar site and they've turfed us off the 2:15pm flight back to Perth and given us the choice between 11:45am departure or 10:25pm departure. Doh! Can't have everything I suppose. First time that's happened to me too.

    • It's not a coincidence that prices are higher at the times when more people want to travel (xmas holidays). Same amount of seats available + more people wanting to purchase those seats = higher prices.

  • Just flew with then. Everything was great!

I'd be worried if I were Jetstar, Virgin or Scoot.

    • -2

I wouldn't worry if you were a 'Jetstar' or a 'Scoot', but a virgin… hmmmm

  • Really what are full service airlines offering over the cheapies these days? Frequent flyer points, a meal thrown in, better flight times? Nothing that's really worth the extra bucks - which can be double the price. I'd only pay more for a more comfortable, bigger seat.

  • Can't complain when they are just under 350 Return! KL-Mel.

    Next best is around 700AUD.

Can use my $350 savings for the better hotels!

    • Where did you find <350 return for KL-Mel, I am unable to find the dates. What dates did you choose?

  • +1

For Adelaide peeps wanting to experience Chinese New Year :

    ADL-KUL $168 leaving 30 Jan … return KUL-ADL 14 Feb $140.

Too Good - especially for Chinese New Year.

  • +1

Just bought a return ticket GC-Kota Kinabalu for about AUD420, very good price.

  • To get the price down even further I book my outwards leg (In $A) using my credit card that has free travel insurance. Then I book separately the return leg using my Citibank plus debit card (Airasia skim on the exchange rate. Citibank plus debit card good exchange rate). I do not pay for seat or food or baggage until a couple of weeks before I fly because if I have to cancel, then this is more money to lose. Also by booking the trip in 2 separate bookings, if I have to cancel/change one leg the other leg is still alive. I just booked for Nov/December 2014 Sydney to Bangkok with great connections total $A358. Note as you get closer to a booking date, AirAsia only offers you bad connections for Sydney to Bangkok & back flythru Kuala Lumpur. And you certainly do not want to spend much time in the Kuala Lumpur Low cost carrier terminal sh1thole.

    • +1

Airasia is moving airport next year in May. they are moving to KLIA 2 which is next to KLIA. looks really good from the photos.

  • It's pretty booked out :(

  • I booked PER-KL a week ago - was wondering what tourist security is like over there? Apparently its a bit sketchy even in daylight? Anyone comment ?

    • It was pretty normal when I was waiting for my flight there.

    • +2

I've never felt unsafe - stayed in the main city area and went out once to a small town [with two locals]. As always, I wouldn't suggest walking down a deserted alley at midnight with a phone and wallet out, though!

    • KL is one of the safest cities in SE Asia, been there at least 10 times and never had one problem..

    • I had read up well on the place before I went, and I was paranoid too. But I found it to be quite safe. I did a lot of walking around during the daytime. Having said that, I still must say that I don't like the place. It lacks character, is not good value, and taxis are problematic. Because of how the taxis were, I forced myself to use the monorail, and that was actually very good once I got used to it.

  • +1

Good news for those travelling next year, Airasia will be moving airport to KLIA2 from May next year.. so no longer in that terrible factory-like place..

KLIA2 is next to KLIA and is connected by train

  • Never got any advertised specials despite many attempts . Ended up flying another airline because tickets are far easier to order for a family. I don't even bother looking any more. Flew aa once, can't complain.

  • booked.
2adults 22/12/2014 mel to bkk, return at 3/1/2015, total 30kg(one no check in luggage)

    3adults, 2kids, 23/12/2014 bkk to macau, return 30/12/2014, total 50kg(just 2 check in luggage)

    Total: au$1763.

Actually I want to fly from hkg to bkk, but it' too expensive.

Turn up it's a bargain for me, especially, high season in xmas.

    Thanks aa.

    • "Actually I want to fly from hkg to bkk, but it' too expensive."

I flew last year, try Cebu Pacific I went Manila to Hong Kong to Bangkok for really cheap!

  • Thanks Op! Just what I needed. Booked return leg from KUL -SYD. I had purchased SYD-KUL on the last AA deal and price was similar.

Cheapest holiday to Europe in a long time. Thanks AA and Qatar Air!

  • What a shit of an exercise booking these 'free seats' within Thailand…. website was getting smashed…

  • yea that wasn't fun. got flights booked in, prices went up $90 a ticket while I was booking. still cheap though.

unable to login to manage my booking still after an hour…

  • Thanks for this! I booked OOL > Kul > BKK return and combined with Norwegian Air Bangkok to Oslo return and got my first Europe trip for less than $1000 return since Airasia stopped flying to London.

  • more expensive than previous sales. gone are the $200 rtns. luckily i booked in their last sale abt a mth ago. gc to kl rtn for abt $250 during april school holiday.

  • Anyone know how to get the promo prices? I want to go from per>bali which says $105.
Since there's no link to click on the per>bali info section, I plug the info into the booking section but all the flights that return to me are at least $200+ or $179 the cheapest but only for a certain day.. this is starting to get frustrating, but for cheap tickets.. i guess gotta put up with it. Anyone got tips on how to find out when the $105 tickets are? I'm pretty flexible with my dates, being a uni student and all..

    • you basically need to book within the first 3 hrs of the sale for the cheapest promo…then it goes to next cheapest. actually within the first hour!! i hate air asia, always such a hassle. once malaysia is awake, can basically forget it. btw they're 2.5 hrs behind.

      • Thanks for the reply! Tbh I gave up, it was getting quite frustrating trying to go through 6 months of dates to try and find the promo price. Plus I saw that per>bali return during dec was under $200 so I think the stress of trying to book it a year in advance isn't really worth it.. Thanks though!

  • Just trial and error with the dates/prices/availability. and clicking on each of the days above the prices (shows 7 days) And then scroll sideways using the red arrows at either side of the days. Promo prices will display if available, after you do a normal search (Put in one way/return, origin, destination, and dates)

    • Got kicked out twice because the tickets I had picked were gone by the time I went through the booking process. $700 return turned into $880 after all their additions… $65 credit fee LOL

  • A tip to avoid the credit card fee is to pay using Paypal and fund the payment using your credit card.

  • Yes, use Paypal and fund by credit card to avoid fees.

Also, the luggage and sometimes the insurance gets added automagically.

You do get the chance to remove them and get back to the original fare; before payment.

I paid $412 for SYD-PNH return in NSW school holidays in Sept/Oct 2014, no luggage.

  • Have been flying Air Asia since they began - and never had an issue. In fact they allowed us on a flight (from Phuket to KL) which had been closed 20 minutes (due to our passports being left in the hotel and a friend having to race them out to the airport for us). Try that with a so called fully fledged airline! They don't have as many frills but if you would rather spend the money enjoying yourself when you get there then you can't go past them.

  • +2

I too have used them a lot. The biggest problem that I have noticed, and, I note from reading their facebook, so have others, is, like a lot of other Low Cost Carriers, they change the frequency of flights on certain routes (eg halve the number of flights, and sometimes cancel flying certain routes all together). A real bummer when you book, for example, maybe 8 - 12 months ahead to obtain their 'sale' fares. When they do cancel, it is a real hassle to get a refund. Also telephone customer service is very bad. They will make you wait up to 2 hours to get through. But I still recommend them 'at the price' if you can get them at a real good sale price. Make sure though, that hotel bookings are 'refundable'. I would never use them if flight connection times with other airlines are critical. As they have short turn around times, if one flight is delayed, the knock-on affect is very bad.

I fly with AirAsia a lot. I am currently on tourist visa in the Philippines and it is cheaper for me to take AirAsia Manila -> Kota Kinabalu -> Sandakan -> KK -> Manila then go to the bureau of immigration. I am also booked to fly KUL-MEL in an exit row in Feb '14.

Just booking my return flight now the sale is on, in May '14 MEL-KUL and happy to see that I won't have to use the LCCT budget terminal anymore.

Also of note, if you buy now for next year, you save about 30 MYR ($10) per ticket in taxes as they won't announce taxes for the new terminal for a few more weeks: At present, the PSC at the current LCCT is RM32 for international passengers, while the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) imposes PSC of RM63 for international passengers.

The only advice I can give is to NEVER book the exit row middle three seats, always pick the left or right side. This is because there are no kitchen galleys, so when rude people want to use the toilet they will walk across the legs of those three passengers. I literally had it happen 50+ times during the first KUL-MEL flight I took. Now I always choose seat 7K.

Edit: Oh and the fact that they now accept Paypal, and that I can pay with my CC through Paypal and not pay $8 for processing, is awesome.
