I'm guessing that Sony won't insist on their own memory format in any Vita successor in future (memory that sells for 4x the price of standard MicroSD/ SD). Let the price-slashings & competition from phones continue.

    • +2

No what will happen is they will go the Apple route. Have built in memory in the base model but it won't be enough. Then if you want more memory you pay out of your nose.

e.g. iPad Mini 16GB, upgrading to 32GB will cost you $120 ($7.50 per GB), and every doubling thereafter will cost a further $100.

So going from 16 to 128 will cost $320. $320 for 112 GB, or $2.86 per GB. Puts to shame even the most expensive SSD, which far outperforms any internal memory in speed tests. But people will be happy to buy it.

Vita memory cards are a hidden cost to offset the loss they take on each unit. You aren't going to get comparable specs on a phone for $200.

      • Yeah sounds right for Sony goes Apple way instead of its Xperia z tablet way unless you are kidding and I couldn't pick it up.
Wonder when the smart Chinese going to come up with an adaptor for micro sd to vita.

        • Wonder when the smart Chinese going to come up with an adaptor for micro sd to vita.

Never. Sony learnt from the PSP and designed the Vita memory card so that a micro sd physically won't fit.

      • No what will happen is they will go the Apple route.

+1. Already there. They still want to sell hideously overpriced memory.

New Vita. On the one hand Sony don't want to stop selling overpriced memory and on the other hand they want to make the console more appealing. 1GB was their in-built limit, apparently :)

What's worse is many companies copy Apple's pricing strategy already, with their phones. No removable battery and fixed storage.

We can buy MicroSD in ones and twos far cheaper than the additional cost between Apple's (fixed) storage devices (and other manufacturers). They buy in the millions for massive discounts and yet we buy in ones and twos. You can begin to see where some of that 130 billion Apple cash comes from.

Vita has an embedded battery too (for more future e-waste potential) just like our friends at the fruity company who don't seem to want to make tool-less removal and replacement of an aged battery a priority. Yes, it can still be done, but with hassle. Many will toss out the device when it no longer holds much charge rather than do the surgery or chase up a new battery and find someone to install it (which will likely be expensive), I bet.

        It's all about the money…
I wonder how long the proprietary memory card thing can go on in the future. The practice is dead on consoles except in the Vita. It pleases me that Sony's projections for Vita sales were far too optimistic and they are finding it tough to move inventory.

Yes but even if you buy these hideously expensive memory cards, they're still cheaper than what Apple charges for extra memory is what I'm saying.

But at least after you bought the handheld, if you find there's not enough memory you can buy more. When you buy a base model iPhone or iPad and you realize you want more memory, you can't upgrade it. You have to buy a new unit.

I got a 64GB Vita memory card for $93 USD. For $120 I can buy an extra 16GB internet memory on an ipad Mini Retina. You decide what's worse.

This was by design. Apple were smart. Not pro-consumer, but smart. They want to make you pay an overpriced fee to have an Apple rep replace the battery for you. If they made it so you could buy the battery and replace it yourself, they'd make a lot less money from you. But as you said, you'll weigh up the cost of replacing the battery against buying a new device and opt for the new advice and throw out the old one, so Apple wins either way.

I wonder how long the proprietary memory card thing can go on in the future. The practice is dead on consoles except in the Vita.

Well if you released a console in 2013 with no internal storage, you're going to get destroyed. With HDDs, there is no need to buy memory cards anymore. They stopped that practice last gen, except with the Wii.

In the Vita's case, building in internal memory would have added to the cost, and made them uncompetitive against the 3DS on price. It would have been DOA. By shifting some of the cost to a memory card instead, at least people will consider buying the Vita.

I find it more justifiable that Sony is trying to rip you off on accessories than I do Apple, because unlike Apple, Sony makes a loss selling hardware. Apple already makes healthy profits, so charging extortionate amounts extra for more storage is unsavoury. Whereas Sony is just trying to offset losses. Is it good? No, but it's understandable.

        • Yes but even if you buy these hideously expensive memory cards, they're still cheaper than what Apple charges for extra memory is what I'm saying.

Ah. For me I think it's more of the same garbage from both companies. High-priced memory. Little regard for longevity of hardware (embedded battery), though I think of course removable storage is better in the Vita approach to extortion.

I find it more justifiable that Sony is trying to rip you off on accessories than I do Apple, because unlike Apple, Sony makes a loss selling hardware

I doubt they are making losses on hardware. That may have been true in the early days of PS3, but I doubt it's true now. They are making far less money than they hoped because of the Vita discounts though, which I think is great. The market is reacting to them negatively.

Well if you released a console in 2013 with no internal storage, you're going to get destroyed.

Well yeah, but my point was simply that overpriced proprietary memory cards are no longer being pursued, and given the reaction to the Vita (and overpriced memory in the PSP before it, albeit memory that was used on other Sony devices…), I have my doubts Sony will try the trick again in a Vita successor. It's a very old & tired game. People want to buy a device and use it to the full potential, not have these hidden extortionate costs added. In this age of cheap flash memory (and cheap quad-core phones with MicroSD slots) it's even more ridiculous for Sony to try this.

By shifting some of the cost to a memory card instead, at least people will consider buying the Vita.

These days it must cost less than a dollar to add several GB of flash storage when buying in the volumes Sony and Nintendo do. Sony could bundle the card like Nintendo if they wanted. Cost to the customer has little to do with it, I think. Shaving every cent off a unit they make in the millions is the main objective.

Removable storage of the Sony is far better than what Apple is doing of course, but the name of the game is the same.

        • I doubt they are making losses on hardware. That may have been true in the early days of PS3, but I doubt it's true now.

If that's the case, we should expect to see 5" OLED smartphones with hardware like the Vita for $200, but clearly they are priced nowhere near that.

Console model is different to your usual gadgets. They make their money on software not hardware. They make royalties on each piece of software sold, so to them it's worth losing money selling more hardware if it means they can sell more software as a result.

Nintendo made a small loss on every Wii U, even though it was underpowered and Nintendo is not used to losing money on hardware (they break even after one game sold though). The 3DS lost money after the price cut. These are all claims by Nintendo, not speculation.

Sony said they were making a loss on PS4 as well.

        • If that's the case, we should expect to see 5" OLED smartphones with hardware like the Vita for $200, but clearly they are priced nowhere near that.

Well you can get quad-core 5-inch IPS LCD phones with MicroSD card slots for ~$200, delivered. Of course these include 3G hardware, dual SIM slots, double the ram and practically the same resolution as the Vita.
          http://dx.com/p/lenovo-a830-mtk6589-quad-core-android-4-2-1-…

Or you can get 4.5 inch quad-core phones for around $150 AUD with similar specs:
          http://aud.dx.com/product/lenovo-a820-android-4-1-wcdma-bar-…

Keep in mind that includes delivery to your door, from the other side of the world, bought in ones and twos. I think it's easily achievable with OLED without delivery these days, especially if you halve the RAM, reduce flash & do other things to match the PS Vita. Of course we aren't comparing exactly the same devices here. Nor the tactile controls. But general ballpark.

Sony know the price has gone down and so they cheapened the display on the new model. That model will roll around worldwide as soon as inventory drops on the current one (just wait). Current OLED model was initially priced far higher and wasn't really meant to be selling this cheaply, but I still doubt they are making losses. Of course I have no way to prove it. Anyway, they can recoup easily on the games (and memory cards…).

        • Never heard of these phones. Can you come up with some recognized brands (yes Lenovo is recognized, but not in the phone world) at that price? This phone smacks of "China dual sim cheapo phone".

And they don't have OLED. The only one I know who makes them this size is Samsung, and you're not going to find one of theirs for $200.

Keep in mind that includes delivery to your door, from the other side of the world, bought in ones and twos.

When you buy stuff from the other side of the world, it's usually cheaper, not more expensive.

I think it's easily achievable with OLED

          Well no one's doing it.

Of course I have no way to prove it.

As long as you can admit as much. Do you doubt Google loses money on Nexus 7s?

Sony know the price has gone down and so they cheapened the display on the new model.

Only in Japan, nowhere else. They're still making OLED everywhere else.

That model will roll around worldwide as soon as inventory drops on the current one (just wait)

It's possible. But if this were the case, you'd think they'd announce it wouldn't they? They did for Japan. And what better way to clear out remaining stock than to tell people, if you don't buy it now you're going to get a cheaper screen?

Anyway, they can recoup easily on the games (and memory cards…).

Assuming people buy them, which according to charts isn't the case. Don't forget that R&D costs are not included in the price. When you sell a lot of units, and you consider the R&D per unit sold, it's not a lot, but when you don't sell many units, that's a lot of money you didn't recoup.

        • Never heard of these phones. Can you come up with some recognized brands (yes Lenovo is recognized, but not in the phone world) at that price? This phone smacks of "China dual sim cheapo phone".

Doesn't matter whether Lenovo is recognised in the phone world or not. That is besides the point. These sort of specs can be done relatively cheaply. It's cheap, but not in quality. Just showing you that more ram and flash memory and basically the same resolution and IPS display doesn't cost much, and that's delivered to you as well. Not ordered in the thousands like the typical Vita shipment which would make cost per unit cheaper when you count transport.

          And they don't have OLED.

          As I already mentioned.

But it can be done if any manufactuer is stupid enough to want to sell a lower-margin device. Sony don't want to sell a lower-margin device, hence the replacement of OLED with LCD in the new model. The point behind all this is I doubt they are losing money. They are now selling a low-profit devuce but I doubt they are losing anything, especially given the volumes they do, and especially on the wi-fi only devices (most models selling worldwide are wi-fi-only). Plus they make far more profit on memory cards & game manufacture / licensing.

When you buy stuff from the other side of the world, it's usually cheaper, not more expensive.

When you ship a unit from overseas in ones and twos, it's normally several times more expensive (per unit) than shipping thousands. Not even talking about slave manufacturing here.

As long as you can admit as much. Do you doubt Google loses money on Nexus 7s?

You have no proof either, remember.

It's great to hear that Sony is making no money on consoles and whatever, because it makes fans more likely to spend because they feel they are getting a deal. Marketing shysters will do anything they can to separate you from your cash. These same marketing shysters sold the third-generation PSP LCD as an improvement in their 'leaked' shot.

Anyway, these 'we-are-making-a-loss' stories are a recurring theme. I know very little about Google Nexus 7, but I know Google pay virtually no taxes because they do everything in their power to pay the minimum possible by hiding profits in tax havens. If they do make hardware at a loss (which I very seriously doubt they do) then they can afford to, and it's a necessary cost of doing business in order to recoup on the other side. Otherwise they wouldn't do it. They make money on every device through profiling (spying) on their users and charging more for advertising through the detailed profiling of its users. Just keep in mind it's far less favourable to the average buyer to hear that a corporation is making mad profit on a device. Selling the device like they are getting a deal makes far more business sense instead.

          Well no one's doing it.

My contention is OLED is more expensive tech that results in less profit at this price and it is not making anyone a loss. Is it more expensive tech than IPS LCDs? It appears to be, otherwise Sony wouldn't replace the screen in their newer PSP (which will be released worldwide, you can count on that). But is it making a loss? I don't think so at all.

Mobile phones are segmented in such a way that the OLED stuff appears in the more expensive devices. There is no compelling case to release a cheap OLED device to compete with anyone else's cheap OLED device in the entry-level or mainstream. Premium devices, yes. That's not to say it isn't possible to sell a device at this pricepoint and make a profit. Phone companies don't make money on overpriced memory or licensing of games or the manufacture of games (all done at profit). They get nothing on this side. So the marketing is totally different. No phone hardware manufacturer wants to make less profit on entry-level or mainstream devices, which is in the position Sony finds itself now (making far less on the hardware than the initial pricing they had on the PS Vita, purely in order to move inventory of unsold stock).

Sony are in the profit on the device before the overpriced memory, games manufacture & licensing are added up, in my opinion. It just doesn't sell the console as much when hearing this. Average Joe: "I'll wait until it gets cheaper." versus "OMG! Selling at a loss! What a deal! I'm gonna go get me summodat…"

It's possible to make an OLED PS Vita at profit at this pricepoint, in my opinion. No hardware manufacturer will want to do this if they don't have to, and they don't have to (especially a lowly phone company making money purely on hardware). No overpriced memory to sell that everyone must buy. No licensing & manufacturing the games. Sony have admitted they are feeling the pinch due to Vita discounting. Hence new lower-cost model, which won't be Japan-only; it makes absolutely no financial sense for the console to be Japan-only. More than likely Japan doesn't have as much unsold inventory to get rid of, while the rest of the world does.

Only in Japan, nowhere else. They're still making OLED everywhere else.

Just a guess here. I think they aren't manufacturing it anymore and have moved over to the newer cheaper device. Seems the normal thing to do when the console is not moving in great numbers. Come back in a year and you'll see this new model selling worldwide (or at least see an announcement that it will be). I guarantee it. Absolutely no reason to redesign & retool to make this a Japan-only thing when your whole contention is OLED is more expensive (and Sony will want to reduce costs worldwide given their discounting of the Vita worldwide).

It's possible. But if this were the case, you'd think they'd announce it wouldn't they? They did for Japan. And what better way to clear out remaining stock than to tell people, if you don't buy it now you're going to get a cheaper screen?

They announced it for Japan because Japan doesn't have a huge backlog of inventory of the old model, more than likely. And for Japanese manufacturers the local market is used to catch any problems before going worldwide and sometimes it also takes time to ramp up production after retooling.

As for stocks…you clear current stocks by not making any announcement to people that a new thinner, lighter & longer-running and more colourful model will be released in their neck of the woods. To most casual observers, these things are a definite upgrade and would have a negative effect on the currently-selling model. I doubt most casual observers will be up-in-arms about the OLED versus LCD downgrade, since an IPS LCD is probably what they're used to. Some enthusiasts may. But they are still getting more in other areas, so it's a bit of a mixed bag and the hardcore gamers will buy the new one anyway.

Assuming people buy them, which according to charts isn't the case.

Vita memory card is pretty much essential to any new Vita owner. So is at least one game. So they are making money on this side. I don't see how this can be denied. Whether they are selling enough games per unit is besides the point (and I don't have that information). They are making money on this side, where any phone manufacturer or whatever can't really, unless they have gaming interests. Sony itself could never get anyone to pay for overpriced memory if they didn't have something unique to offer (ie. their games on their platform). As I mentioned earlier, it's great they're struggling. It probably means a more realistic deal in future without the overpriced garbage.

Don't forget that R&D costs are not included in the price. When you sell a lot of units, and you consider the R&D per unit sold, it's not a lot, but when you don't sell many units, that's a lot of money you didn't recoup.

Same with any product. Quite a different business model Sony have to recoup their costs in comparison to any typical phone company cranking out cookie-cutter Android handsets that don't have the luxury of their own games & cards (and with no opportunity to charge third-parties to publish on their system)…so I'm sure they do fine not worrying about the little profit they likely make on the currently-discounted OLED PS Vita (which will be phased out and replaced with the new model worldwide as soon as they can).

          Again, my opinion only.

  • Sounds good - when is the deal valid? Is it on now? And until when?

    Thanks

    Pro tip/ Get Soul Sacrifice!

    • +1

honestly you are better off getting killzone, soul sacrifice delta is coming out early next year which will be improving upon the game.

      • Yeah Killzone Merc 2 will be out one day as well.

    • It's free on US PS+, if you're going that route.

  • I like this deal quite a bit, Soul Sacrifice has been on my 'to play' list for awhile now.

The other common bundle (KZ:M, 3G/wifi Vita) is available now for online purchase for $199, if you can't wait for the upcoming EB deal.

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/game/ps-vita/playstation-vita…

  • Well. It was good trying to resist for a while, but the time has come to get one! Soul Sacrifice looks sweeet!

  • +3

just extra note, Soul Sacrifice is free for US PS+ subscribers next month. EU/PAL PS+ might get the same deal in the future.

    • Really? How could? Dmmit, just brought SS 2mth ago and haven't started to play yet. T.T

    • Thanks for the heads up. I picked up Killzone instead.

  • -1

    any 3ds xl deal?

  • PS Vita 3G alone it's a bargain, but EBgames said that they are going to sell PS vita 3g for $188?

  • Jesus these things are so cheap now. I remember buying mine at release wifi only for like 350

  • That looks like its the PS Vita 1000 not the new slim 2000, can anyone confirm?

    • +1

pretty sure second version with the LCD screen is only available in japan so far, you can pick it up from importers, playasia (?)

    • +1

Just picked one up finally caved in, it is the original PCH-1000 not the PCH-2000 series model (believe new one only released in Japan currently)

      • +1

I am extremely tempted too, already have PS+. Looking forward to second screen and remote play with PS4

        • Have PS+ too and claimed all the VITA games so have a nice collection to access.

  • poops all over 3ds prices.

    • Not when you factor in the memory card that is required for all games.

      • Anyone know if 16Gb of MC is enough for like 5 to 8 games? I saw that the 16Gb was $45 at EB… might just go to JB for price match if i buy this…

        • Most games are less than 2GB. Uncharted: GA which is one of the larger games is ~3.5GB.

  • Man, this particular deal, is it in-store only? Only the bundle I posted above is on their webpage. No JB's near me (120km to the nearest one).

  • Picked one up at Woden, ACT. They had maybe 3 or 4 out the back when I called before going in. I was going to pick up wi-fi last week at Big W's but they were out or staff had no idea what they were doing. The time finally came to get one. Still need the memory card though.

  • +3

I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but the Vita really is very underrated.

I bought one on release and don't regret it at all. It had a slow start with not too many good games out, but now it is absolutely flourishing with good titles. For $199 with Killzone or Soul Sacrifice, it's a bargain.

PS+ pretty much pays for itself on the Vita alone, let alone the PS3. This month, Uncharted:GA, Gravity Rush (AMAZING GAME), Jax and Daxter Trilogy and Oddworld HD are all free.

Anyway, if you are thinking of getting one, here's a list of games you should definitely pick up:

-Uncharted Golden Abyss (Free on PS+)
    -Gravity Rush (Free on PS+)
    -Persona 4 Golden
-Killzone Mercenary (It's the only good FPS on Vita)
    -Soul Sacrifice
-Unit 13 (good third person shooter on the go - plus its real cheap)

-Silent Hill Book of Memories (lol just kidding, its f****ng awful)

Anyway I hope this post has helped: I am by no means a fanboy; I own a 3DS as well and play both pretty much equally. This a really powerful piece of kit and now is the perfect time to capitalise on a good price: keep in mind, release price was $449 for the 3G model so you are definitely getting your money's worth!

  • Selling soul sacrifice in Perth? Pm me.

  • This is selling very fast; It's sold out in World Square and there's few if any left at PItt St Mall in Sydney.

  • Just bought one from EB (Who priced match JB Hifi's deal)

    I got:

    PS VITA wifi/3G
    8GB card + 10 game mega pack
    Persona 4 Golden
    Killzone Mercenary
    Soul Sacrifice
    Assassin's Creed Liberation

    For $330

Plus I also get Oddworld, Uncharted Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush from my PS Plus. Very happy! Thanks OP!

    • You got all that for $330?

Not bad. Did you ask for a bundle deal, or is that just how much it all added up to?

I no longer see EB advertising their "Seen it cheaper? We'll match it" from years ago, so I never asked for a price match.

      • Yes EB price match but to what extend depends on your luck.

      • Sorry for the late reply, Soul Sacrifice and Assassin's Creed Liberation were pre owned, I got the bundled deal of Vita 3G + Killzone. She said they don't normally do it, but I had asked EB Games on twitter and I know the manager so I was able to get them to price match it. Posting receipt below.

  • Too bad theres no monster hunter… else i'd jump on this right away lol…

    Nice deal though

    EDIT
Nvm, found out you can get the older MH on this… probably go pick it up tonight with soul sacrifice since i have a $50 JB voucher

    • Also new Monster Hunter Frontier G coming out on Vita.

      • In Japanese right? They havnt confirmed it for a western release yet, I didnt think?
Since capcom didnt bother with 3, I have doubts about them releasing this in the west/english on Vita, unless Vita sales pick up a lot with the ps4.

      • Yeah but i heard you need a subscribe to play that… TBH i hardly play handhelds anymore… i have a psp and ds XL which i dont use… Now that i think about it, this would be more of an impulse buy lol… after thinking it through and factoring in the memory card cost, i'm having second thoughts

    • -2

IMO, Monster Hunter is garbage that only the Japanese can like.

It's just a stripped down Diablo clone.

      • +1

Its nothing like Diablo at all. I feel your opinion is one born of frustration, MH can be too difficult for some to appreciate.

        • The PSP version I played was (the original). But it had only one town. I didn't bother with the series after that.

        • These games aren't played for their story telling mate. Its a monster fighting/teamwork thing.

        • 100% agree i love the game coz of the monster fighting

@lostn i don't see how it is a diablo clone… diablo was about getting the best gear, MH is about skill and teamwork… one wrong move = punishment by the AI.

        • These games aren't played for their story telling mate.

Neither was Diablo. It was fun for a short while, but I got bored of it quickly.

        • MH is about skill and teamwork… one wrong move = punishment by the AI.

That might have been the problem. I played it single player. Online gaming on the PSP was not a very big thing back then.

There is still skill and teamwork in Diablo btw, especially at higher difficulties.

        • I always thought items offset the need for skill in the Diablo… don't get me wrong i played D2 with crap item and godly item and still get thrashed but thats coz i usually fall asleep lol

        • In the highest difficulty you need both items AND skill. And a good team.

  • Ok, so I impulse bought this one at jb hifi Doncaster. Might come in handy when I pick up my ps4.

Anyway, stupid me didn't realise I needed a memory card as well, so what size should I get and where's the best price? Planning to sign up to ps+ once I receive my ps4 or when I get the vita memory card.

  • Never really considered buying a vita - that may soon change… ;)

  • Picked one up and am liking so far! Anyone know of any cheap, decent cases for the thing though? Don't feel safe just chucking it in my bag as is.

    • ebay.

    • Anyone receive their code from Sony yet? I linked my PSN account to my new Vita but haven't received an email yet with my code to redeem a month on PS+ yet…

  • Okay - done. Couldn't resist giving it a whirl at that price.

Got it with the killzone option. Will be good for streaming netflix too. Thanks OP.

  • Bought one at the BigW sale and I must say, I'm loving it… not sure why people are bashing it saying it lacks games… there are plenty of good ones and got lots of free ones with PS+…
Also make sure you get the PSP Patapon games, still my favourite games even now!

    • that is because 3ds Xl has much more games~ no offence

      • I have and love both handhelds but in my opinion the Vita has a better selection of games that interest me. For me the 3DS has Mario, Zelda, Starfox, Donkey Kong, Fire Emblem and Monster Hunter. That's a fine selection of games but Vita has more for me.

        • any suggestions? I onli got SS for my vita…….

        • kingdom worrior?

        • Not sure what that is. I forgot Guacamelee and Mutant Blob Attacks.

        • whoops, I mean Dynasty Warriors. I bought P4G. Gavity Rush and ninja sigma plus today

        • Dynasty is OK. I imported One Piece PW2 from Japan which is same kinda thing, love it, great game.

        • but its hard to read Japanese rite

        • Totally impossible tbh. But on the other hand its a DW game so if you've played on then you've played them all.

Should automagically happen when you sign in with your playstation account? I think once you sign in they send you an email with a redemption code for the store?

Buy a PS Vita system and link it to you Sony Entertainment Network account between now and 31st December 2013 and we’ll send you a voucher code for a whole month’s PlayStation Plus membership at no extra cost

I linked my account about 10 days ago - still no activation code received from Sony - seems everyone else is in the same boat - interesting that Sony didn't detail when they would actually be sending them out!

      • I'm in the same boat as well :(

  • So.. this doesn't come with a Vita memory card does it? We'd have to fork out another $84 for a 32GB card?

  • or 64GB from PlayAsia for $128 shipped. Seems a better deal..

    • or 64GB for $100 from yesasia seems best.
