  • Pretty good price, they are currently $89 (w/ mic) incl. shipping at headphones.com.au

A bit cheaper here :P + free "delta" headphones whatever they are + also "fb2012fiver" still works for 5% off mp4nation! Not that it matters because it's currently cheaper from Amazon.
But you do get the free returns thing at headphones.com.au (Not sure if you get it with IEMs.. hygiene issues an all)

just a quick review of the M4's:

TL:DR Pretty good all round sound quality (slightly poor bass response in some areas but excellent separation), excellent build quality and you wont find anything better for under $50 (hell, if you're in retail stores, maybe even $100). Would Recommend for: Poor/cheap people after good sound quality in a portable size.

I bought a pair because I was strapped for cash and my sennheiser cx-300II's just died. I went for these over the similarly priced M5's because mp4nation was have a promotion at the time (came with another set of delta earphones). I paid just under $40 AUD incl. shipping. I am by no means an audiophile or have a wide experience with earphones and as such most of my review will be in comparison to the cx-300II's.

Build Quality is about 12341 times better than the sennheisers. They feel well made, with solid ear pieces and the tangle free cord is actually really quite good. The plug is at 90 degrees and again feels quite strong and stable. They came with like, 5 different sets of ear cup things (the rubber tips) and 1 set of foam ones. haven't tried any other than the ones that fit me. The case they come with is also really solid and protective. They also isolate much better than the sennheisers, but on the flip side have a bit more noise generated from it rubbing on clothing.

Sound Quality: Extremely subjective, but I'll give it a go. They are good. not amazing but very good. These are balanced and so I think the sound is meant to be as the artist meant for it to sound (vs the cx300's which I think emphasise bass). As a result, the bass doesn't sound as full or warm, but more… clinical I think would be the best term to use. Again, the balanced-ness also makes the mids and treble sound more clinical, which is actually quite nice for some genres.

I listen to rap like Jayz and Drake, to Pop EDM like avicii and Alesso, to electronic slow stuff like the XX, Lorde and Purity ring, and finally to alt rock like The strokes and Arctic monkeys. For tracks like Pour it up - Rihanna and Clique - Jayz, Kanye and Big Sean, there is nice clean separation between the tracks (vocals to bass tune and rhythm/melody). Bass can be a touch muddy, but the mids shine. Under control - Alesso/Calvin and Dear Boy - Avicii the bass is much smoother, and seriously, those mid tones are kick ass - vocals are clean and sharp. Crawlersout - Purity ring and Nightswim - Owl eyes are also good examples where the separation is evident. I really like that sound so I love it. Especially in the former there's a few times when the treble hurts a little bit but not really a complaint. Undercover of darkness - The Strokes and Snap out of it - Arctic monkeys the bass can be again, a little intense, muddling the distorted vocals at times. However, the guitars sound awesome - really crisp.

Oh and one thing I noticed… they require more power to drive than the sennheisers, so you need to turn it up a bit more to get the same volume… either that or I'm going deaf. (Actually, it's probably a combination of both)

Negative on build quality for me.
The first M4s I got were faulty (for sure), because the second pair that was sent to me (after a month, once MP4nation restocked, I reminded them.. and then they sent it to me, MP4Nation's customer service is pretty good) sounded a LOT better, oh and the first pair that was defective, when I was trying to pull off the eartips.. the housing fell apart, so YMMV. Personally I prefer the Meelec M6s over the Brainwavz M4, they were cheaper too! But.. everyone is different, so it's up to you.

They also isolate much better than the sennheisers, but on the flip side have a bit more noise generated from it rubbing on clothing.

For your information, they call it "microphonics", easy solution is to attach a clip with the cord to your shirt :)
Your thoughts on SQ are pretty much what I heard with the 2nd pair of M4s sent to me, not sure what you meant by clinical, but they sounded a bit radio-ey for me.

P.s. I know I'm not the only one with this problem but the box with the mic + 1 button control, is useless, it's stuck or something, voice-control automatically activates whenever I plug my M4s in my iPhone, or it randomly changes songs :|

Another negative review from me. A friend and I bought these last year from MP4nation. My pair came apart at the seams immediately (the grey line on the picture, right earphone) like the person above me. This has never happened to me before - I'm not exactly the strongest lass.
Her pair died within the first two months of owning them.
The sound isn't great. I now own Soundmagic E10Ms, which outperform by a mile, and have a much better build quality.

      • yeah YMMV haha.
I got the pair without the microphone so I skipped some issues there.
I guess build quality vs quality control is the issue more than anything. IF you get a good pair they are made well :D

By clinical I just mean they sound very even and maybe flat? like there's no real emphasise on any particular wavelength and the sound is very straight. Again, not really sure what the technical term is but yeah.

Oh and they also came with a shirt clip! I should probably use mine.
