Battlefield 4 PC

Hey All,

Been out of the PC gaming arena for awhile. Looking at building a cheapish PC to run battlefield 4. (Sub $1k) Any help? I got a 1920x1200 resolution monitor, so looking at something that would run well at that. Oh and i'm in Perth so something MSY based would be epic! :)

Thanks for the help!

    CPU: Intel Core i5 4570 $225
    Mobo: Asrock B85M-PRO4 $92
    RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1833 $99
    SSD: Samsung 840 EVO Series 120GB $109
    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB $99
    GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD7950 3GB OC Edition V3 $269
    Case: CoolerMaster Storm Enforcer $99
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 520W $89
    ODD: DVD burner $20

    Approx $1k.

No Windows there, but I'm sure you can salvage some of your old stuff to be re-used in the new build so you won't have to buy everything new.

    • You can probably salvage your old HDD and old ODD, so that'll save around $120 off this build. If you already have a powerful PSU (i.e. 550W-ish +), you can probably skip that as well. Same goes with the case.

If you do manage to spare up some cash, you can probably put it towards the GPU. MSY had a 7970 for $299 over the weekend which you missed, so that's unfortunate. GTX680s were going out the window for like $300 over the past couple of days too and with recent price drops, GTX770s can probably be found for around $380 or so in about a week or two once the prices equilibriate to Australia. EVGA GTX770s (which is usually an expensive brand) is already $399 at PCCG. Shouldn't take too long for Gigabyte/ASUS cards to reach the same price and MSI/Galaxy and the others to reach $370-ish.

  • Thanks mate. perfect response.

Get an i7 and 16GB RAM. Next gen games want more grunt. Well worth the extra $200 now.

    • going form i5 to i7 will have absolutely no effect on gaming. i7's only help if video editing and other hyper-threading applications are used.

Plenty of games coming out have recommended specs as at least an i7 3770… as ethereal88 has obviously noted…

Plenty of games coming out have recommended specs as at least an i7 3770

          Name one.

        • Watch Dogs - Recommended
          Processor: Core i7 3770 @ 3.5Ghz or AMD FX-8350 @ 4.0Ghz
          RAM: 8 GB

          X Rebirth - Recommended:
          OS: Windows 7 SP1 (64-bit)
Processor: Intel i5 (Quad) / i7 with 2.5GHz or equivalent AMD product
          Memory: 8 GB RAM

        • I don't quite buy this. Logical cores don't count for anything in gaming — realize that the next gen consoles run true 8 core CPU's but the Intel Core i7 series are all quad cores with Hyperthreading enabled. And we know HT kind of sucks arse for games — it doesn't justify the $100 increase to go from 4 cores, 4 threads to 4 cores with 8 threads.

Another thing to note is that we don't actually know if the Core i7 benefits these games which are optimised to run on console based hardware. It hasn't been released and won't be out till next year.

I would take it with a very fine grain of salt and wait for actual benchmarks to come out.

        • Watch Dogs - Recommended

The same recommended specs include a GPU starting at a HD5850 - what will be a 5 year graphics card on release. With that in mind, I think I'll be waiting for the actual performance reviews instead of trusting this, myself.

        • First Your "X Rebirth" spec is just wrong it is actually this:

Processor: Intel i5 (Quad) or i7 at 2.5GHz or AMD equivalent

Second for "Watch Dogs" there are three possibilities:

1: Ubisoft just made a random claim because they have no idea and don't want to get bad press when the game comes out for running badly (very likely)

2: Ubisoft got cash from Intel to list that for no good reason (possible I guess).

3: The game actually benefits from an i7 (extremely unlikely)

        • my X Rebirth spec is wrong?
ummm, its exactly the same as what you posted with the / changed to the word or…

        • You're right, I misread your comment because I didn't think you'd be stupid enough to think that a requirement of i5 is the same as requiring 'at least an i7 3770'.

    • Assuming hyperthreading actually benefits the game at all, which is doubtful to begin with, the performance increase is only 10 - 15%. Doesn't sound worth $100 to me.

Also: the OP clearly said sub $1000. It's not up to you to play with his money when the criteria have already been stated - how about actually curbing your recommendations to suit the circumstances, instead of spouting the same 'i7 and 16GB RAM' every time?

    Yap, yap, yap:

    http://www.bf4blog.com/battlefield-4-retail-gpu-cpu-benchmar…

    BF4 i5 4670 - 72/95

    i7 4770 - 92/115

Now multiplayer obviously needs more grunt, so you were all saying? Next gen games will take advantage of i7's easily; i5's are pointless if you can afford a measly $100 extra for an i7.
