  • Does this come pre-installed with Android? /s

    No, really, good price. Tempting.

    • +27

It Dual boots iOS and Windows 11

      • Really? I am so buying this. Hope you are right about the iOS and Windows 11 thing!!!

  • So wait or get what's the verdict ?

    • +1

Personally I'm waiting to get the 1020 at a Killer price, Just want that phone badly, However I'm lamming the thought of a 920 at sub 300, a great deal no doubt for a pretty hot phone, 925 doesn't look as good as 920.

    • Depends on if you want an android or not.

    • +2

Nexus 4 has been the best phone I've owned, so waiting patiently for the Nexus 5 and praying that the camera is better than the travesty the 4 has.

However, if you take a lot of pictures and haven't already bought into another app ecosystem, the Lumia is very attractive.

    • +1

Definitely wait. Nexus 5 is expected to have a pretty good camera. Much better cpu and gpu and functionality.

  • +1

If you're not an 'app person' and you want simple reliable usability, Windows 8 is the 2nd best (only beaten by BBOS10). But dont kid yourself if you're a gamer or like 30 apps for specific tasks.

Its a great work phone, with a small amount of 'fun' thrown in. I'd recommend them.

    • On what basis is Windows phone 8 second only to BB?

Even if you don't use many apps, windows phone 8 keyboard is crap, the browser sucks, and the OS is missing things Android & iOS both have (e.g. Notifications center). Overall, the OS has a long way to go. Personally I don't think it will catch up to Android anytime soon.

The only thing it has going for it is the fluidity.

      • +1

I thought the Windows 7 keyboard on Lumia was absolutely brilliant, perfectly responsive. Did it take a dive with Wp8?

        • Its probably still decent.

Just that Swype (self explanatory) and Swiftkey (awesome text prediction, voice dictation and has a number pad!) have streaked ahead.

Due to the closed nature of Microsoft's APIs they don't allow potential innovation.

      • Pretty sure the WP keyboard is considered one of the best out there? I certainly thinks it's pretty good…

      • Notification centre comment is accurate, but will be implemented with 8.1. Keyboard and browser comments are purely subjective, and personally I find the wp8 keyboard and browser leaps and bounds ahead of android. Android has by far the worst keyboard I've used. The stock browser is absolutely awful to use. I honestly don't know how you came to your conclusion.

        • Android has by far the worst keyboard I've used. The stock browser is absolutely awful to use.

          Which android device you're using?

Chrome is stock on the Nexus and though it's not quite as good as Dolphin, its syncing features make it the best imo.

Google keyboard(stock keyboard on nexus) is great to use almost as good as swiftkey.

        • I have a galaxy tab 2, and my wife's last 3 phones were all android - HTC one, galaxy S2 and HTC magic. Have not been impressed with any of them.

        • You know you can change the keyboard right? Use whatever you want… Thats the beauty - you're bound to find something you like.

Whereas with WP8, you're stuck with what MS want you to have.

Once you go swype you never go back.

      • The keyboard on W8 is equally crap or equally nice when compared to standard keyboard on android devices. There are many browser options if you dont like the IE. It has its own way of notifying the user.
I do agree that the OS has long way to go but its not a incomplete OS. Its user friendly and can run equally smooth on some of lesser able devices (hardware).

Try running Android on same and you will see the benefits of W8.

I have used many Android devices, was a apple fanboy till iPhone 5 hit the market. I still have my office phone (provided by my office) a S4 and I have moved away from it - why because the standard OS lags.. when compared to a 920.

Since then I have moved up to 1020, both my kids use (a Sony Z1 and HTC One - both are better phones than the S4)

so everything that you have said above is your personal opinion not facts.

What apps do you need which aren't on Windows Phone 8?

I'm sure it can be forgiven for not having over nine thousand different fart noise apps like the Itunes store.

      • +1

A decent browser that works in most websites is missing in win8 phones. Although fart noise apps r not missing..

        • What exactly doesn't work in the IE browser?

        • +2

You can't use submenus on sites, eg. On this site if you want to go to deals then freebies the submenu doesnt persist and the browser takes you straight to new deals when u click on deals

      • The sort of apps that is important for usability. i am not downloading fart noise apps, or is it windows store has 80 000 fart noise apps.

      • +1

Google apps for a start. No one "needs" any apps, but it's better to have them than not to have them.

      • +1

There's apps for basically everything on WP8 - including most google stuff. My gmail is integrated with the inbuilt mail app, Metrotube works great for youtube (better than first party iOS and Android apps), and 6tag is better than first party Instagram apps (although that's on it way in coming weeks).

It also comes with Office (Excel, Word) installed, and integrates with your Windows 8 PC via skydrive.

So there's not much missing from WP8 - although a integrated Notification centre would be nice. And some of the big games come to WP8 a little later.

Heck the 920 even has an FM radio and NFC, which iPhones don't.

Most people that whinge about no apps on WP8 have barely used one.

        • +1

Works better or not, it's annoying to use a bunch of third party apps.

          http://www.windowsphone.com/en-au/search?q=google

Only the first one is from Google.

It also comes with Office (Excel, Word)

Yea all Windows users mention this but I doubt they rarely use it.

      • If Windows Phone 8 could get toast notifications for facebook messenger and a unified notification centre happening I would have zero complaints. It is awesome otherwise. But I use facebook messenger a lot and without toast it is not practical to use. Unfortunately, for me a deal breaker…

        • +1

I thought my FB messages were instantly arriving and appear as a thread exactly the same way as an SMS would (HTC 8x). I just go to one spot for all messages - they are there sms, mms and FB….each arrive with a notification. Any FB conversation on my phone is synced with the FB website. ?.?.?

        • They dont appear as a notification on the home screen or as a live tile. I need to go into the application to view any notifications (Lumia 510). It doesnt come up at the top of the screen as an sms would.

        • +1

Lumia 510 is WP7 that is no longer supported.

        • mine do

      • +2

Am lot of the apps just aren't as good and are missing feature, eg. EBay app doesn't allow you to see the buyers address, so I have to check that in the site which is a pain.

Between minesweeper and wordament I figure it has games covered. I am not a 3d gamer though there are quite a few other decent and impressive titles.

Another unbelievable omission is no Bluetooth keyboard support, this is a pain when you have office available, I would use it much more that if I had to type everthing on the on screen keyboard.

I also couldn't find a decent podcast app, I tried 3 and I am not sure there were any more. In the meantime it seems like there are billions on android

There are many more issues, none are obvious. I now have a HTC one, and I have to say I prefer both vanilla android and w8 interfaces than the HTC custom one. Mind you I feel like the trade off is that I have a phone half the thickness and weight and also the main apps are all available.

There are some good apps, kindle, Freda, the 2 games I loved, the camera is great, Nokia maps is good, and its more fluid and easier to use. It's just that these little issues come up like the bt in thing, and there is absolutely no workaround

  • Well I had an s3 for almost 2 years then lost it , I bought a nexus 7 now looking for a new phone and since I have nexus 7 I thought I could save myself cash and get something a bit different in the phone dept.

    • +8

Nothing is tougher (physically) than a nokia. Look up their phone testing on youtube. Its EXTREME, and i can vouch for it being real. My GF's phone has been through worse than the videos show.

The tools are all there, the phone works well, and I personally love Windows8 OS.

Its hard to sum up; think of it like….

If you want a facebook app, it has one. and it works.

But on android, if you want one, you have 300, and some work, but some may be much better than the 'default'.

Windows is a much more simple, friendly, user interface, and honestly for work, basic social stuff, and a good quality phone, they're amazing.

If your use is: Phone, SMS, (popular)Social Media (twit, fb, etc), surf the internet, watch videos, listen to music, 10 minute 'waste some time' style games. Then you'll be VERY happy.

If you want "the Fango App" (eh Rach?) or… well anything overly specific, its likely not there.

The Blackberry Z10 on sale has full Android Emulation, so you get blackberry apps, AND Android apps if you so need. Worth a consideration.

      • -3

        Kinda doesn't work when:
        A) there is no official fb app by fb. Forget instant or prompt updates for notifications or msgs. Its lacking a lot in functionality vs the other platforms. If you're a heavy fb user prepare to be disappointed.
        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2139750
        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2093707&p…

        B) No file browser without playing the upload to skydrive and then downloading it again game to just access it

        C) Doesn't play mkv and ac3 or other popular video formats without having to recode your whole collection. There is no VLC type all format media player. Just stock.

        D) No enterprise wifi support! For uni students, you more than likely will not be able to access eduroam as Wp doesn't support for Eap-Tls authentication. For large corporate companies - it means you might not get onto your work wifi!

I'm a pretty advanced android user and was considering getting the lumia 1520 when it comes out. Unfortunately, after doing a bit of research into it, Wp8 as an os is still miles behind on basic functionality (not even talking about apps hete), such that I would only recommend it if you've never used a smart phone before/don't do much on them.

        More thoughts here:
        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2053361&p…

I will eventually try wp8 (Nokia hardware is awesome) but right now the software holds it back too much imo at the moment.

        • A) There is an official FB application; FB had Microsoft develop it?

          B) Because it's caged up for security; I don't recall ever having to file browse on any other phone anyway. It seems a pretty niche feature.

          C) That I'll give to you; mkv support would be useful for many and probably needs to come sooner rather than later. But generally I don't watch video's on my phone; I use a tablet or laptop.

          D) I can use my Windows phone at both Melbourne and Monash universities. However, the Eap-Tls auth you speak of will be available in the Windows Phone 8.1 release.

        • +1
          • Have you ever used FB on another platform? My friend has an android tablet which gets FB notifications/msging instantly. His WP8 (925) phone gets it an hour later and the damn live tile doesn't reliably update either.

          re: EAP-TLS support
They've known about this flaw for 2+ years:
          http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/forums/101801-feature-sugg…

1+ years since they gave the completely useless and non-committal "at some point" response:
          http://www.wpcentral.com/wi-fi-eap-tls-support-coming-window…

And still potentially 7 months before we finally see it (not barring delays):
          http://blogs.windows.com/windows_phone/b/windowsphone/archiv…

I mean seriously? Enterprise wifi is not a feature, its a bare bones core requirement that iOS and android have had since day 1.

And they want business users to switch to them and take them seriously…yeah right.

        • +3

You're inaccurate by saying it doesn't support enterprise wifi. Enterprise wifi is not EAP-TLS.

Windows phone does support enterprise wifi, but not yet EAP-TLS. If the network uses (for example) EAP-MSCHAPv2 it will work.

        • Corporate and uni Wifis are kinda something you need to be compatible with…not the other way round.

Inexcusable since android and iOS have had it since day 0.

        • I'll just remember to tell my phone not to auto connect to Monash or Melbourne Uni campus wireless networks next time I'm there, because they surely won't work.

Regarding FB; yes I have used it on iOS (still own and use an iPad) and Android devices. I don't use push notifications on them because I don't need to be glued to social media 24/7. But in my experience the applications on those platforms has been notoriously buggy in times gone by, particularly iOS (I had a 3GS and 4 over 3 years, and 10-20% of the time there was a crash bug in the FB app). I'll test the push notifications on my WP FB app later.

        • Really rather than making excuses for Microsoft (not Nokia in this case) we should really be taking them to task. The fact that some basic taken for granted features aren't available in the core OS is a barrier to success, and they have the resources they just aren't doing it. Shame.

        • B) No file browser without playing the upload to skydrive and then downloading it again game to just access it

What do you mean by file browser? I know I can just plug it into a pc via usb and see it as a removable drive with all folders and files listed. Works just like a usb flash drive.

I can copy and remove music, apps, and photos from the phone without having to even install any software. Easy as. Can also instantaneously copy over files via bluetooth to pc or another phone (except for iphones unless they're jailbroken).

If needed can also upload/backup to cloud via skydrive.

      • But on android, if you want one, you have 300, and some work, but some may be much better than the 'default'.

So 3rd party apps are a bad thing?

  • +7

Don't forget Nokia Here maps - Free GPS navigation without using your data (i am told)

    • -6

free in aus you need to pay $20 if you want to use overseas.

      • +3

It's free worldwide with the 920, and all the other high end Lumias. Not exactly sure which other Lumia models though, it gets rather random down the line…

        • Here Maps has maps for about 100 countries/regions and is free worldwide for all models. But Here Drive, a turn-by-turn voice guided navigation system, is free worldwide for high end models and only free for one country for lower end models.

        • is 920 a lower end model?

        • No it is not, the 920 was released at the time as a flagship device. From what I know 620 610 520 are country specific Nokia drive only. Those are the low end. In another note my Nokia 5800 has all the countries available and camera alerts, a feature that is mysteriously left out in Windows phone.

        • Nokia are idiots for caring, it should just be available to everyone. Even when behind the 8 ball some idiot there comes up with a policy to try and make a few dollars by hamstrining their features. What they should be concentrating on is making the very best value phones which is why we bought them in the first place. What about if you have a HTC 8x? Do you get all countries or just one?

    • And it's awesome.

  • +1

    Anyone rate the seller?

    • Anyone rate the seller?

      Good question.

I would also like to know more about the "Aus Warranty".

  • Yeah I am going to have to update this deal sorry guys it comes up as $0 shipping in PayPal then they add it on

  • There done that's the actual deal their website quotes you in paypal as no rate for shipping then adds it

    • So now its the same cost as the BB Z10, I know which I'd be getting….

      • I think the 920 is much better looking soft and hard ware

  • +3

I used Nokia 920 for almost 6 months and upgraded to 1020. love what microsoft has done with W8. Great business phone and simple to use. It has all the apps that one needs (atleast from my perspective). the UI is silk smooth and one can simply cannot destroy a Nokia phone - BTW I paid 660$ for my 1020 shipped from US with 2 high end cases (each at 40$)

    • +1

One does not simply destroy a Nokia phone.

Also note that the only 4 and 5 star reviews all repeatedly mention the store's business name - a sure sign of a fake review.

    • $75 shipping lol

      • Those fvckers con me every time when I'm trying to find a cheap Q10.

  • This site also has Nokia 820 at 228$

since getting tricked into the $308 price I object to paying anything over $300 for it if kogan decide to do free shipping I'll take it. Until then :-S Nexus 5 on Nov 1st it is.

    • -1

look up the Z10 now it has OS10.2 update.
If you're the type who use it as a communication device more than a gaming platform, you might have found a new love child.

      • yeah it does look better but I cant justify not waiting for the nexus 5 now since the price gap is less than $100

        • -1

If you can stand using Android again, I guess so.

        • yeah I am hoping that kitkat is more user friendly and less buggy , or I will use cyanogen mod again which is very useful they have fixed all the annoying android bugs.

          Have you tried cyanogen?

        • I'm on Cyanogen now. I'm still leaving for BBOS as soon as the Q10 gets to 'the right price'.

I hate that android feels sandboxed, and every app seems unaware of every other app. Its… clunky…. to me.

It feels like loadind and unloading a mechanical pencil, every time I want to write something, when there's a pen right there.

      • If you're the type who use it as a communication device more than a gaming platform, you might have found a new love child.

        What makes is so good?

  • found a tiny discount of $3 guys

  • I have had Nokia in the past and really rate their hardware. All the Lumias are beautifully made and my old N9 still trucks along beautifully.
I bought an 820 for wife's GF a few months ago and she raves about it. All depends on whether you can live with Windows and its relative lack of apps.
BTW, my local HN has the 925 for $529, unlocked, until 31/10. IMO the relatively low price point of the 1320 is going to push the prices of all the Lumias down over the next few months.

    • +3

      'Lack of apps' is situational.

My girlfriend, for example, has never been without an app she wanted. Watches movies, listens to music, has a metronome for singing practice, facebook app, surfs the net, and sends me naughty mms's. Its all good.

      • +4

I can confirm this. His girlfriend sends me naughty mms's too. It's alllll good. Giggity giggity! :D

        • Is she the one with the red hair and the tattoo on her chest? If so I'm getting them as well. She must send them to everyone on Ozbargain.

      • When you said metronome you reminded me the only tuner I could find sucked big time

  • WOW WOW WOW…

  • +3

Regardless I'd stay well clear of dwi/eglobal if you're after this or any phone.

They're the worst of the importers and are known to ignore your warranty claims. Do some research before buying!
Not worth the $20 saving over someone more reputable like kogan/unique mobiles.

    • -2

happy to hear your 2 cents but this is not a good enough reason to neg vote.

      • +5

Eglobl/DWI deserves all the bad press it can get.

      • When I and many others here have been personally burned by eglobal/DWI (owned by Trudark Ltd - a shell company based in HK), then I think its important that people are warned.

Buy from Eglobal/DWI if you're purely after the lowest price and don't care about potentially:
        a) long shipping delays with bait and switch tactics
        b) loosing your item in transit and renegging on all responsibility because you didn't buy postage insurance and not offering a refund unless you escalate through paypal. By the way paypal covers transit insurance…
        c) Poor communication with template responses
        d) Most importantly - post sales warranty. Good luck making a warranty claim with DWI/eglobal. They will either flat out ignore you or make you send it to them at your own cost and then find "No fault" with the item and refusing to replace it. This is after you nag them with daily emails + taking 2-3 months.

Not saying Kogan/Unique mobiles are perfect by any stretch, but they're definitely better than eglobal/DWI who are the scum of all internet retailers.

Would you risk all this for $20?
        http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/nokia-lumia-920-32gb-black-unloc…

Good luck to you all! :)

  • Great phone and great price.

I was a little underwhelmed with the camera in good lighting to be honest. Found that the lighting had to be perfect for the algorithm - it excels in low light, though. No questions there.

Windows Phone 8 is very pretty and if you're not fussed in the way of apps, then you will love this phone. Very nice to use.

  • +2

See the comments at the link below before you buy.

  • Is there a way to watch Netflix? Changing DNS is not allowed on WP8.

  • +1

Bought a Samsung Ativ S for $476 a while back. I really couldn't care less about the price, but the experience has been bleh. So far, WP8 is heavily crippled, stock apps are poor, third party alternatives are just not there (the stock music app is horrific with tags, no FLAC support except for that Skydrive app, no free FTP app, yes no mkv support even via third party etc) and the real kicker is I still have no GDDR2. Don't need it but for the price I want the bastard to be updated at least. First time I bought a Windows phone and so far, looks like the last time. I think I'll switch to a Nexus 5. Windows Phone is just dead, no one seems to care. Only crashed once so there is that and its simple and OK, but it seems to one step away from being abandoned.

    • +1

That's what you get for buying Samsung. They don't care about you, only your money.

WP8 is not dead, its going stronger, but seemingly only with Nokia. Samsung threw in the Ativ as a token effort, it clearly doesn't care. The HTCs were nice, but they seemed to be backing off. LG gave up midway through WP7s life, which was a shame, because the optimus 7 was a beautiful phone.

But the Nokias are getting better and better, and with it is overall growth for the wp8 OS.

      • +1

He's describing OS issues though…Nokia doesn't fix what MS has dumped on them.

Don't get me wrong - the nokia hardware and apps look really good. But the overall phone feels severly limited by WP OS in its current state.

  • Was about to buy then read all the user reviews regarding these guys, think I'll wait

    • Edit - posted on wrong comment. My bad.

  • -1

use the second link in the description then.

  • not bad for a mid range phone but but but it's a WP.
If you need a good camera in a cheap package get the Sony Xperia SP.
Else for a little bit more dosh LG Optimus G or Nexus 4 is a lot better (except for camera).

  • can u believe this crap phone starting at $800? Insane Nokia~~~~ Stupid CEO

    • The CEO was actually quite smart ;-) hoping Lumia 1020 will fall below $400 within half year's time.

    • This is definitely smarter than most people. :-)
