AVG Free Causing Internet Connection Problems

I have a problem I hope someone will be able to throw some light on. (On XP, recently bought s/h computer)

Yesterday I noticed on my housemates computer the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it on the AVG icon in system tray. I opened AVG and it appeared there was nothing functioning, this was after a recent update from AVG 2013 to 2014. I tried 'healing' the problem but ended up uninstalling AVG and installing Avast. The Avast install had a problem towards the end and the system hung for a while, couldn't install Chrome. (Didn't know Chrome was part of it)

I D/L'd Avast before uninstalling AVG, then uninstalled AVG and then neither FF or IE would connect to the internet even though LAN was connected. I looked in my router info and only my computer was 'attached' to the network - but not my housemates.

In 'Command Prompt' I tried IPCONFIG and got nothing except another 'CP' prompt. I then tried to ping the router with the same result - Destination Host Unavailable.

I got in touch with the guy who sold it to me and he said it was an AVG issue and he could only fix it by a re-install of the OS - for $90.

I have done a google on this and the only recent item is here - http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=333745 - either this is a one off or a well kept secret?

Any ideas anyone?

EDIT : I tried 'restore' but it wouldn't work no matter when I tried from.

Using antivirus is so 1990s. Just don't go to dodgey websites and download crazy software.

Anywho. A few ideas depending on what outcome you want. If you're just after connectivity (at least for now) id start with disabling the built in xp firewall, finding the details of the network card, getting new drivers from manufacturers and then uninstalling the old onesand installing them. Try a usb wireless adapter if you have one and see if that works. Or if you need to reinstall windows yourself and save the money - I could probably talk you through any of that. Reply or pm me

  • I'm also concerned about why chrome didn't install…

  • Try these things.
Grab the avg removal tool from http://www.avg.com/au-en/utilities and run that. (use another pc to download)
Otherwise try to boot to safe mode and sytem restore back a few days.
Download seatools for windows and run a long test.

  • Malwarebytes is a good free option. Commonwealth Bank online security department recommended that to me a while back, haven't switched since.

Why are you using a primitive decrepit OS that expires next April?

  • Thanks guys. She's already taken it in for a reinstall of OS.

AVG was removed and restore wouldn't work no matter when I took it back to.

    • reinstall of OS — $90

You're paying $90 for a reinstall of the OS? That's quite steep for such a simple procedure. For $100, you could even buy yourself a new copy of Windows 7 or 8, and upgrade the operating system to something more secure and with less headaches.

Try to negotiate on the price. reinstalling an operating system is nothing more than popping a disc in, clicking a few message boxes and installing drivers. You could do it yourself.

      • Yes, it is steep, but no discs here. Thought about getting Win 7 but not my call. In the end the guy installed it for nothing.

  • Not as easy as "popping in a disk" when using xp. Especially if a laptop.
You will need to source device drivers for graphics card, network interfaces, sound card, as well as other various drivers such as intel management interface, storage manager, bluetooth, usb2/3 etc…..
Then there is the hundreds of updates that will need to be installed to make it secure.
3rd party apps. Java, flash, actobat, silverlight etc.

Worth every penny of the $90 if you are going to stick with xp.
