Dodger by Terry Pratchett, Hardback, $9.99 Delivered

130

I ordered this on Sunday and they shipped it today. I would have listed it earlier but I figured it was a price error and would just be rejected. It looks like it'll take 2+ weeks to ship now, but the price seems solid. Nearest on booko is about $17 delivered (different ISBN/cover version).

Blurb: A storm. Rain-lashed city streets. A flash of lightning. A scruffy lad sees a girl leap desperately from a horse-drawn carriage, in a vain attempt to escape her captors. Can the lad stand by and let her be caught again? Of course not, because he's … Dodger!

  • whats this meant to be a parody of

    • It's not part of the Discworld series, but I think it's mostly around Dickens' Oliver Twist (e.g. The Artful Dodger…)

If you are in Melbourne there's a bookshop on Bourke near the corner with Queen that has this and a few others. Everything in store is $10 or 6 for $50 (I think).

    • sounds like The Book Grocer prices?

  • Great book. Also made me go out and read London Labour and London Poor by Henry Mayhew, also a good book but for very different reasons. Think your life is crap now? It's a good thing you didn't live in London in the 1850s.

  • nice. cheaper than paperback version on booko!

I am going to miss Terry Pratchett's works so incredibly much. It is indeed a tragic and ironic end to one of the greatest creative minds, and literary wits, of the last 50 or more years. How staunchly he is facing such a terrifying future just underlines what an amazing individual he is.
To my mind, no honour is too great, even if it becomes a surprise to him every time he sees it, perhaps so much the better? Bless you Terry, for all the joy you have brought me, I hope life at least brings you joy in your future.

    • Agreed - what a talent, what a joy, what a mind. What a sad loss we face.

    • I was happy to learn of the alzheimers thing - it's progressed far slower than his original prognosis/fears.

Not dead…alzheimers/dementia…same as my mum…terrible disease.

    • God knows how many of those subscript barely-related rants or references the used in those Discworld books.

Clearly the dementia was clearly setting in at the start.

      • You should probably get yourself checked out too. I don't understand your first sentence at all :-P
