I did a check for availability (for black only, not white) around various state capitals and saw stock in Warringah, Karrinyup, Tea Tree Plaza - other stores call. Too bad I don't live nearby.

Seems to be wider stock availability in white:

Just went to Karrinyup and the lady said there weren't any. She said that everyone has been asking and seemed pretty annoyed by it.

I rang 3 stores in Melb showing stock and none of the stores had stock.

  • +7

Soo has anyone been actually able to buy one?

Or is it one of those "theoretically in stock" officeworks listings?

    • Stores showing low stock only indicates one or two in stock, however this includes the display model, and also any stolen stock, so most likely none.

      • +2

        and also any stolen stock

Someone must've thought that $20 for this reader was a steal…..quite literally lol

  • Just rang these 2 stores and they said they dont have it in stock. Flail!

  • Had a chat with the harvey store reps and they said "you might be lucky in store" and get a price match. Might be worth calling them up.

  • Has anyone seen covers for this size model being sold anywhere?

    • I got one on ebay for under $10.
It is ok, made of pu leather, but not very classy.

      • Seen any in stores? I need one for a birthday this qeekend.

        • Well I ended up finding the official Kobo branded covers with the auto-sleep sensor half-price at the moment at Harvey Norman.

  • nada in Bendigo

  • Maybe it's an officeworks tactic to get everyone to price match at DSE and thereby make them trade at a loss.

    • dicksmith doesnt price match below cost for one and they dont sell this ebook reader IIRC

  • -1

Really not much people like this size too small.

    • +3

      Thats what she said?

      • +1

Probably depends on the screen and user. Personally I find reading on a 5.3" 1280x720 screen perfectly fine but I have no idea about what screen this thing has.

        • -4

          whoosh

        • If you check how many bought Kobo Glo and how many bought mini you will agree.

But for $20 still a good buy.

      • I'm reading on a TrekStor Pyrus Mini, it has a tiny 4.3" screen. A bit of a shock after my 6" Kindle Keyboard go the black lines of doom, but once I started reading the size really doesn't bother me.

    • -1

I didn't say nobody like it just less people like the mini than the Glo.

    • +1

I have both sizes (mini and touch).
I prefer the mini as it is more portable.

    • +1

      I got one, love it.

  • Called riverton, they said it was a product recall 2 weeks ago. Strange that they put it up online for that price.

  • Tried 3 stores - none of them actually had any stocks.

David Jones also rejected price matching.

  • +1

The case cost as much as the device lol

    • Wheres case for sale? How much?

  • +2

Thanks for the heads-up - JB kindly did a price match. Can't go wrong at $20!

  • None at Mt Ommaney

  • Quite like mine that I got for the JB deal - I only wish it a had a backlight for reading in bed.

  • Is that possible to read kindle ebooks on kobo? Anyone confirm that.thanx

    • +2

You can read kindle ebooks on any device. Just use calibre to convert them to a pub format.

      • You need to un-drm it though. But I guess having a device that supports epub can be really useful because libraries uses that format. Of course you can still strip off the drm for that but thats "not legal" because you don't own the book.

  • +1

I bought this at $49, loved its concept and ran out and bought a Glo. Gave the mini to my Dad,. It's a great reader if you don't want a light or a slightly larger screen.

  • Great ereader! Perfect for packed train reading.

  • Brisneyland CBD are out of stock….

Just bought what appeared to be the last one (white) in Wangaratta, VIC.
Ticket still showed $98 but scanned at $20 and even the lady said that's a good deal.

    They are certainly around though…

  • QV Melbourne have no stock. I might try a price match at JB at lunch.

  • I bought the last one according to staff at Westfield East Gardens in Pagewood half hour ago.

  • +1

Lots of positive votes. I guess that means many scored one?
I must be doing things wrong?

    • +1

      Got to be quick :)

  • Went to Southland (Vic) first thing this morning, showing as in stock last night & this morning, but apparently none there. One really nice, but harassed, woman was taking down names and numbers of people asking about them. I wouldn't have bothered at retail or even $50, but at $20 it would have made great presents for the kids at Christmas. Ah well….

  • all sold out? it says Currently unavailable online and in store.

  • All 3 local stores showed stock but none actually had any :(

  • +1

Wanted this for a while now but missed out when it was on sale for $49 at JB. Went to JB just now to get a price match. Didn't get at the price I wanted but got a discount. Paid $30 so i'm still happy.

    • +1

I got a match price at Harvey Norman for $20. Can't get any better!

      • +1

Please upload receipt if you could. Thanks.

      • which store?

        • Blacktown, Sydney

        • Was it in stock when you purchased it ?

        • +1

How they price match when no stock on big w website, or did you show them receipt that other member have uploaded here.
          To sako

  • OH NO! Forget about price matching, it's now showing up as unavailable online or instore.

    • Probably we can try price matching the receipts peoples uploaded.

  • Same at Highpoint, Melbourne (VIC) it shows stock but they do not have any, telling they already sent them back or something???

  • I spoke with HN chat and they won't price match as its out of stock.

  • JB HiFi - Bourke Street (VIC) price matched for me this morning, had few when I bought.

    • Was it out of stock at Big W when you purchased it ?

    • The guys at JB Bourke Street (VIC) wouldn't give it to me for that price. Big-W website is now showing out-of-stock.

  • Thanks Op!!
my sister just got a pricebeat at officeworks yarraville.
she brought two but apparently the guys said there were quite a few out the back still.
if it's any help, the guy that served her/authorised it was "Lenny"

    • I was there just then. They have nothing left. Lucky her.

  • Not sure, JB HiFi guys didn't even bother to check. He just offered he straight away when I said Big W selling for $20. No dramas.

  • Same here. JB HiFi happily matched the $20 price tag.

  • yea got 2 from JB with price match!

    • +1

      Could you post the receipt?

  • Got it from JBhifi, staffs ask me to show them the bigW website, although it is out of stock, they price matched.

  • Anyone manged to price match in nsw?

    • +2

Tried jb blacktown but they won't do it.

      • Try at Harvey Norman, Blacktown as I got one

        • Thanks Sako.
I went there and they won't match it as it was out of stock :(.
          It seems you were lucky.

  • +1

checking OW online, they're actually advertising it as $29. better chance of getting them to lower the price,
    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Ebo…

    • Yep, was at jb hifi at Liverpool, nsw - the guy serving me was awesome, still couldn't do $20 but was happy to do $29 so I jumped on it :)

  • I went to get one but the screen size put me off. Maybe it is because I am so used to bigger screens such as my 10" tablet. =D

    • +1

You have to do a lot of page turning with a smaller sized screen, which detracts from the actual reading experience and uses more battery power.

      • That's true, I was thinking of getting it to read some PDFs but it is tooo small for that even.

  • I am willing to buy if anyone interested to sell.

  • Please mark it expired. On website - 'Currently unavailable online and in store'.

    • Thanks! :)

  • Tried BigW Charlestown NSW, they said the Mini had been "recalled" so all BigW were told to send them back. To where I don't know… They called a few other stores close by, same story.

  • Does anyone have the issue of a loose battery? Give your Kobo a shake.

Also PSA, if you guys are happy to play around with the SD card inside you can score a free upgrade of memory from 1.3GB to ~3.2GB of storage since there's actually a 4GB MicroSD card inside.

Use gParted on Linux or http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html for Windows.

Use at own risk, make a backup of the SD card if you do.

    http://i.imgur.com/TFVom20.jpg :)

    • Did you use a separate microSD Card? If so, what software did you use to clone the original one?

    • Yeah, my Kobo touch has a loose battery. No idea how that happened but it's affecting the battery life and sometimes doesn't turn on. Did you fix yours?

      • Yeah I fixed mine, but the Kobo people said I voided my warranty as soon as I brought it home so that I couldn't get it replaced. No worries though. (Not faulting them, but I did save them the replacement/shipping fee)

      • Also, I'm guessing that's the reason for the recall.

  • JBHIFI in Modbury SA and Gepps Cross SA both honoured Big W pricing without checking online or calling a store.
