Im going to neg this just because its Mix. I seen the 4 corners expose on the Bangladeshi slums that Coles uses to get this clothing so cheap. Id rather pay more knowing someone didnt have to possibly die or be exploited for me to have it.

finally someone that makes more sense than the Vegans

    • Good to know, and it would probably make me think twice about buying these things - but I don't think the deal deserves a neg because of it. Just like I'm not keen on buying Nestle products due to the many infant deaths they are responsible for (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestl%C3%A9_boycott) however others may still be interested.

      • I hadn't seen the TV show. It makes it difficult. Many garment workers labour in difficult conditions, but it is preferable to subsistence farming, which is pretty much the only option.
I can see how a Nestle boycott could change their policy, but isn't it likely that boycotting these sellers will just result in them sacking the staff?
Better to campaign for change another way?

        • So after watching the video, I don't want any part of this deal. The only redeeming thing I saw was that some of the worst condition operations are being phased out. The factory owners keep making the point they won't take work from Mix because the payments are too low for them to operate profitably and safely.

    • I'm not justifying these but without having ever spoken to anyone who knows the subject and having never been to Bangladesh myself I don't know even to make a fully informed argument either way.

$1.90 may not seem like much but then their rent/mortgage may only be $2.50 a week to live in a reasonable house.

If people don't but the product then the factory may need to shut down and then will they be in any better of a situation? It's one thing to say 'boycott Coles because they get their clothes from Bangledesh' instead why not say 'Let's speak to Coles about the conditions and make enough noise that they do something about it'. They could easily invest in the factory's and improve the working conditions and all wages of the workers.

I think it's important to spread the word that the conditions aren't good enough, but think of the ramifications if those people are fired. Could they afford to feed their family without that $1.90 a day?
