1kg Fire Extinguishers $10 at Kmart (Darwin, NT)

990

Looks like Kmart is getting rid of their fire extinguishers from the boating section. 1kg is small enough you can generally find a place for it on the car somewhere and it might come in handy one day. Also good for round the house as well
Pretty good price, super cheap do the 1.5kg for $20 on special sometimes.
Assuming its Australia wide so maybe your kmart has stock? Plenty in Darwin .

Mine just prematurely went off recently… in the back of the tow car…. =S

Due for a replacement, will check it out. Thanks!

    • +2

      prepare for 'premature ejaculation' jokes

      • +11

That is a 'premature' joke about premature jokes. :-)

          Burn

        • Why is this downvoted so much?

        • Because even if you ignore the fact it's a lame pun, the correct spelling is still 'come'. (As in the verb vs. the noun.)

    • -4

      That's what she said.

    • this would come in handy if you ever experience and auto-electrical fire, but the chances of that are slim — the higher risk would be being in a collision, where this could become a deadly projectile, unless it is in a secured bracket.

  • Hmm not sure if I would trust Kmart quality for something important like this.

    • -8

Surely made in China at cut price, probably filled with rubbished asbestos we sent over there to get rid of and they are selling it back to us in powdered gas form.

      • +34

Asbestosis/mesothelioma will kill in ~30-40 years whereas fire could potentially kill in ~30-40 seconds… worth it!

        • +5

to be sold here it has to comply with our laws…….right?!?

        • Maybe that's why they are trying to get rid of it ASAP.

        • @Forfiet You would think so, but last year in Australia, over 24,000 Chery and Great Wall cars were imported, inspected and many were sold, before it was revealed that they had been built with asbestos parts. State government reports show that over a third of our homes contain asbestos in numerous forms, which is often damaged and becomes a hazard to occupants and workers during renovations and other household maintenance — they have no plans to implement an asbestos removal program, home owners are on their own.
Moral: don't rely on the authorities 100%.

Hmm not sure if I would trust Kmart quality for something important like this.

It would have to meet safety standards. Kmart or not, it would be a huge improvement on having no fire extinguisher if you needed it.

      • +3

+1, no way I'm going to spend $50-100 on a fire extinguisher, because it isn't mandatory.

For $10, sure why not? Safety +

    • +4

lets be honest the quality doesnt have to be that high when we will have fire extinguisher chair races

  • It is a clearance ticket so it might be just your store. Good price though…

    • Looks like it's an official clearance ticket, so should be all stores.

    careful - Spiderman.

    Fire sale?

    • +14

      Don't ignite a debate here

      • +11

Hope no one gets burnt with this deal.

        • +10

Visit KMart quickly or the deal could all go up in smoke.

        • +4

I know that I'll get flamed for this, but you'd be better off spending that $10 on fuel.

  • +4

Used by Date (Recharge date) approaching shortly I assume ?

    • Yep, well worth checking the tag. Think recharges lasts 5 years from memory.

      • +3

If you encounter a NSW Maritime officer, and he wants to see the date on the fire extinguisher, it might be the moment where you wish you would have bought a more "up to date" one.

  • Uh….. Don't think I'd trust one of these. Avoid.

  • +7

Good for killing malevolent Great White sharks…provided you're an expert marksman.

  • is this available in all Kmarts ?

  • +1

There's just something weird about buying discount fire extinguishers…

  • -1

Might be good for kids' parties.

      1800 Docs?

      • 1300 Family Court more like.

  • Why would spiderman be under the shelving? To keep them from being ozbarganed?

  • -3

    It's a fire sale(!)

  • +1

    puns aside, i have a serious question;
whats the go with leaving one of these in a car on a hot day? my car is often left the whole day in the sun over summer (usually 40°C +)

    is this dangerous?

    • I obviously can't guarantee that nothing will ever happen however I've fitted a small Quell Extinguisher into each of my last three cars and never had a problem with them from heat exposure over that 16-17 year period. Mind you, I've never needed to use them and sold them off with each car so I don't know if they even worked BUT I regularly checked the gauge to make sure the pressure was still within range so I assume that with a quick shake they would've worked well enough. Better than nothing anyway.

  • I'm assuming that the fire retardant used in a boat extinguisher is good for the kitchen / bbq?

  • +3

    Just bought one !

Now, any yatches on clearance ?

  • +1

These are made in china, wouldn't trust these… Buy ones that are made here, they cost more, but least safe. Safety always comes first dont go tight over safety, that's the point in having one of these in the first place.

    • Have a cheap one is better than not having one.

      • Not if it doesn't work…

  • +3

Just checked Sunnybank, qld kmart. $28. I didn't see an Australian standards sticker on it either, so probably wouldn't buy one at $10 anyway.

    • Buy a cheaper Chinese ripoff from Yuens instead?

  • +1

I was excited to see the title of this deal, then all the negative posts above have extinguished my faith in this product now :(

    • +4

Buy yourself and tested urself, all neg comment here never use or owned one, you think.kmart dumb enough to import not working product? Remind you all 70% product in this earth is made in china

      • What about Earth 616?

      • true, but not everything made in China is made to standards set by the wholesaler, retailer, or the country it is sold in. most of the product made in China is made with rudimentary local standards or none at all. do not assume it is all of the same quality as Apple, Sony or Canon products made there.

  • +3

I had a look at the one i bought. No 'made in china' anywhere that i could see. There was an Australian address for some company. There was a aus/nz code for whatever safety standard it is designed for. No build date that i could see but the 'charge' Is in the green.
For this price maybe the pesimistic among us could buy two and try it out, just to assure themselves that it will work, probably good practice as well.
Edit: just had a look at the package again. 'Made in China' is there as well as a price tag saying $35.

  • this may be a silly question, but once you press the button, does the extinguisher empty its contents completely or can you do little bursts?

    • +5

My time spent in high school gym class says you can do little bursts.

    • +1

      That's not what SHE said.

    • +1

Only sprays when you depress the lever. Release it and it stops http://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/page.php?id=632

    • You can burst it, but as soon as you press it once, you can consider it depressurised and you should get it refilled. (Throwing caution to the wind, you could reuse it.)

That is to say, you can only use it for one fire-based incident, but you can burst many times during that one incident.

When are they going to sell these throwable ones? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm8xPQoiQSs

  • +2

Are these things safe to use on my girlfriend? I caught her smoking twice last week.

    • +2

      Bit too big, I'd say…

    • +1

If it keeps smoking she should start using lube! Prevention is better than cure.

  • +1

    Still $28 in Syd

  • Found this exact one in Brandon Park Glenwaverley but the price is $28. The guy at the store double check the price and said there is no clearance ticket on this and no way they can sell this for $10. He said it must be a store special.

  • +1

Sounds like the deal has been extinguished guys :P
