Lightning adapter to adapt 30pin speaker dock(legacy) to 8 pin iphone 5

I bought the Sony x30 speaker dock today and now I'm looking for a suitable adapter to suit my gf's iphone 5(it's a gift for her).

I found a better deal for 2 x lightning connectors only $2.50($1.25 each) on ebay :

Some things I need to know please :

Will it work with this speaker dock , as it says " NOT Support Audio / Video Output"???

If it is only good for charging does this mean she will still need to connect the 3.5mm audio plug to get sound from her phone to the speakers?

Although a fair work around, it kind of defeats the purpose of the dock and is a bit fiddly for her and makes me look like a cheapo because I didn't buy her an "iPhone 5 compatible" speaker dock as she wished for(they are just too expensive).

then how about a bluetooth adapter instead? :)

    • Bluetooth adapter is not able to charge the phone.

does she not already have a charger?

wireless sound would make you look like less of a cheapo :)

I have this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/350844331563 It works to charge and play audio, but you have to control the audio from the iPhone and not the dock.

    • How sturdy is the plastic?
I have a feeling the 3.5mm jack could snap off with rough handling(she's a bit careless).
I think that is a good option. Might buy this too. Thanks.

Or the other option is to use the charging only adapters I already purchased and simply connect a 3.5mm extension cable so that she can plug it into her phone to use. When she plugs in her old iPod it will work natively with the dock so no converter adapter or audio cable is required. Though I think with Pandora and internet radio she will be using the iPhone 5 mostly.

Not having functionality of the front-facing buttons of the dock is not a deal breaker as they are optional.

It's not too bad quality, but at $3.75, you could buy a couple just in case. It's still a more elegant solution than running a cable for audio.

  • Just buy the Apple converter. It's $35 so not expensive

    • Well that's the same price of the dock which doubles the purchase.

  • I'm also looking for an aftermarket/cheaper product which does the same thing. Apple's product is ridiculously expensive ($39), and when you need ~3 of them the costs add up. However the adapter does need to include a DAC as the iPhone can no longer supply line-out audio through the dock connector. This is likely why no alternatives have popped up yet.
