Brother HL-2132 or HL-2130 - refilling toner cartridges

I bought a Brother HL-2130 from Dick Smith. It's already whining about low toner. I was about to buy some on ebay. Then I noticed you can buy a cog and spring that is supposed to allow you to modify a starter toner cartridge into a normal one (so it takes more toner).

I picked up two empty (non-starter) toner cartridges from a Harvey Norman ink & toner recycling bin, so I could see where this cog and spring fits. But on my starter cartridge, there is no "axle" to fit a cog and spring - it looks like the lid off a spraycan but smaller (if you know what I mean).

Can I really fit the spring & cog to my starter cartridge!?

  • Try covering the sensor with electric tape.

  • I bought the same kit,
The printer still registered low toner.

I also tried the tape and colouring in the window with a black artliner.

I also tried cartridges from cartridge world.

Good Luck, I ended up buying genuine cartridges, when on special at officeworks.

When the printer died I ended up buying a Fuji Xerox, haven't looked back.

    • I have a generic replacement toner cartridge for mine but it still shows as low toner. However it does print without issue. As long as it continues to print I can live with the flashing light.

Try resetting the printer, it rechecks the toner levels in the cartridge. I used it when it gave me an error.
    1. Power off
    2. Open front cover
    3. Press and hold GO
    4. Power on
    5. When the top 3 lights turn on, release GO, then press GO 2 times
    6. The lights turn on again, press GO 5 times
    7. Ready light turns red, close door

Have used this trick on a number of these printers - does the job each time, on both the starter, and full cartridges. Good for resetting the printer when the yellow toner light starts showing.

      • Could you please tell me - on the left side of your starter cartridge - were you able to fit the spring & cog? My starter cartridge doesn't look the same at that position. I've got the other two I picked up at Harvey Norman, but I'm wondering how they fit the cog & spring on a starter, when they look different. They also don't give out the instructions unless you buy the cog & spring (which would help me see how they fit it). Has anyone converted their starter to a normal cartridge? If so, could you scan and send me the instructions so I can see how they modify the starter cartridge?

        • I didn't buy a cog and spring, the reset code was enough to turn a starter into a normal cartridge.

    • Will try this later
