Anyone know where i can buy a copy of WIN 7 PRO/ULT?

Hi guys,

I recently built a second computer and require another copy of WIN 7… I'm aiming for Pro or Ultimate however, i cant seem to find any cheap stores, officeworks is still selling it for 400+ + delivery.

I did find a cheaper place, buytec.com.au WIN 7 Ulti for ~$290. Anyone know if they are trustworthy? If not, are there any other alternatives?

Cheers,

ProjectZero

P.S. please dont say ebay… i bought two copies of MS software there… both were counterfeits >_>

  • Any reason you're going for a full retail copy over an OEM license?
OEM System builder versions of Windows are usually around $99 dollars, from any reputable computer shop. MSY for example.

    • haha yeah but there are two reasons why i dont want OEM,

      1) they may not sell it to you unless you purchase a mobo and CPU from them
      2) i don't intend to get windows 8 anytime soon and if i have to change anything i dont wanna have to buy another OEM.

a full retail is just slightly easier and if i wanna reformat etc. it'll be better then calling MS everytime.

      Just my opinion though.

        1) Microsoft relaxed the rules for OEM license TC's last year meaning that you can now buy Windows 64/32 bit OS's without needing to buy anything else. No computer shop is going to stop you from buying Windows by itself now.

        2) Small changes to your hardware won't affect anything. You can upgrade the RAM, CPU, GPU, Hard drives etc. and Windows won't deactivate. You may however need to re-activate by phone if you perform a motherboard replacement.

You may even transfer your OEM license from one computer to another, although the condition is that you must remove Windows 8 from the old machine before installing on the new one. (simultaneous installs are not allowed)

You can read the FAQ for OEM licensing here
        http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/windows-8-install-…

Of course, the relaxed OEM rules only apply for Windows 8 and not 7.
I don't see why you have to avoid Windows 8 when it can be used in a similar fashion to Win 7 with a Classic Shell / StartIsBack installed.
The only thing that looks different about windows 8 is the lack of the start menu (which you can bring back!) and the metro interface (which you can skip entirely!)

        • I suppose if the rules have been relaxed i could give the OEMs a shoot… its not that i'm avoiding win 8, i just used to win 7 that i heard something about win 8 not having some dvd playback feature or something that you have to purchase from MS for an additional fee.

that and… i'm really liking the win 7 layout and the win 8 one seems more suited for tablet then a desktop

I thought Windows was free …

  • You can get them from officeworks (online only, not in store)

7 has been replaced. Everything it does 8 does it better. Plus 8.1 is retail only - for $120 (USD) you can reinstall at will and have a pretty box too. OEM is dead.

    • Yeah, but its more of a personal preference then functionality

    • Except play Borderlands 1
