$38.50 Philips 12W SMART LED MR16 Kit @ Lamp Replacements O'connor/Balcatta WA Pick up

10

Fellow Ozbargainers,

Our branch in O'connor are clearing out some LED Downlight kits, note this is NOT a complete fixture, just the sum of parts which make a complete fixture ie:

Gimble with reflector + compatible transformer + the now superseded Philips 10W lamp.

A modular and more repairable solution essentially.

NOTE about the Philips 10W lamp, this lamp is a very good lamp, however now supersceded, and when we compared it against the current 7w which now replaces it, the 10w in this kit is still far superior, not sure why Philips did away with such a good lamp, as the new 7w lamps is lower lumen output, uglier (pokier design) and has a weird dark spot in the middle of the lamp.

The only draw back with the 10w lamp in this kit, is that it has an inbuilt fan which can make a very soft hum, so if you are in very quiet environments with low roofs, ie a study/library, with sensitive hearing, it may be an issue, other than that normal applications are fine, and tradies love it, and don't particularly like the new 7w.

This kit is more suited for people who:
- Want a modular/repairable/up gradable solution in the future(ie not a fit, forget and replace the whole unit scenario if one component fails), future proofing in that, you can upgrade to the new 7w or any other MR16 in the future as outputs/technology improves or just change colour temps/beam angles if you are not satisfied.
- Domestic/retail use
- Indoor use (Outdoors can get spiders stuck in the lamp failing the lamp! Yes it has happened before, which we fixed for a customer)
- Situations where dimmers are required* (Only recommended dimmers)

Specifications on the unit is as follows:

Lamp:
- Philips MR16 "MASTER LED" Series 10W lamp(Contractor grade, ie not the stuff you see in supermarkets)
- 25,000 hours claimed lamp life
- 36 Degree Beam angle
- 80 CRI
- Warm white 3000k colour temperature
- 3 year warranty, Australian standards/EMC approved

Transformer:
- Philips transformer (ETS-60)
- Flex and Plug

Gimble:
- White version only
- 92 mm cutout, standard cutout size for Aussie homes
- High gloss deep dish reflector, for good glare control which is a big issue with LED

Total System:
220-240V
12w Total system power consumption
Dimmable with clipsal universal dimmers
IP20 Rating Class II ambient operating temperature -20 to 40 degrees

  • do you have any of the 12w MR16 led lights by themselves? (or similar)
    maybe 60 degrees angle?
    if so, price please

I am after several for my kitchen but 36 deg is not wide enough (8' ceilings) and replacing 50w halogen

    • G'day Oz dxer,

Do you mean just the 10w lamp thats been supersceded? if so, unfortunately not, all that's left is the lamp that is kept in the kit.

You'll find that because you have high ceilings the 36 degree may be enough though as the throw of the light will spread out further, with 36 degree, the 60 degree may not be enough to give you good light at that height, but it all depends on your spacing and what not.

I wouldn't recommend the 7w 60 degree for that same reasoning added that the 7w 60 degree has less lumen output than the supersceded 10w.

You may want to go with an integrated fixture with your ceiling height as they generally will have a better output, but will cost a bit more and not modular. It all depends on your layout and spacing between lights etc. Best thing is come into store and talk to one of the guys, we'll be able to sort you out.

      I hope this helped

      • i am pretty much convinced i need at least 12w (real 12w, not Chinese 12w)to give enough light output.
Anyway any 12w, 60 degree leds would suffice i believe.

Thanks for the reply, i continue my search…….. :)

        • Not a problem, we also have stock of other LED MR16 retrofit brands such as Verbatim, GE, Eye lighting, however they're all around the 7watt(400-500 lumen range), I can't recall any over the 10 watt power level(without going to specialized architectural grade lighting), from the major manufacturers that is domestic grade due to heat issues that are associated with that wattage.

You'd really need to look more at the Lumen output, if you were simply looking at a wide angle retrofit MR16 with the highest legitimate lumen output, the Verbatim 7w would be your best bet its i believe got a 55 degree beam angle at 390 lumen.

Unfortunately I can't give out prices over the net(boss says so…boo right?) unless they are clearance specials that we are running in store, though feel free to contact our branches to find out.

Good luck and have a good long weekend :)

  • Good deal if you need all the parts which sadly most people don't as the philips have a great tolerance to trannies.
In a commercial environment the old Philips units have an unacceptable failure rate but at home the grinding bearing failure noise is tolerable in the bathroom etc.

  • Do you mean just the 10w lamp thats been supersceded?

The 10W is not superseded, it is discontinued

NOTE about the Philips 10W lamp, this lamp is a very good lamp, however now supersceded, and when we compared it against the current 7w which now replaces it, the 10w in this kit is still far superior, not sure why Philips did away with such a good lamp, as the new 7w lamps is lower lumen output

The new 7W doesn't replace the 10W. The new 7W replaces the OLD 7W.

Philips did away with the 10W because they are inefficient heat bombs that don't last very well.

480 Lumens from 12W system is NOT a high-tech product… only 40 lumens per watt. You can get similar output from a 8W LED with proper driver (ie: 6W lamp + 2W driver).
