Need your Opinion... OzBargainers

Hi Guys..

I was looking for a start up and have considered selling handmade bags/purses online (ebay and my own ecommerce website)

But I thought that first of all I need some opinion of my OZB peers.

I am sure public at large will be prepared to pay higher than what we are prepared to pay. :D (I mean we calculate the value for money)

So now my question is. How much do you think people would be prepared to pay for some of the goods shown here.

Please bear in mind that these are premium traditional handmade bags (made in india) form high quality materials.

  • Hi atitshah,

With all due respect to the Ozb community, they are not the best people to ask for best pricing re designer/artsy stuff. Moreover, a significant number would sell their own organs if a brilliant deal was to be had. :)

    On topic:

    $0-$10 - an absolute steal
$10-20 - would be a really good price
$20+ - depends on the quality and fabric; if you get any hand-embroidered stuff with silk based fabrics(especially Zari-type things) could be significantly more.

    • omgwtfbbq, Thank you for your feedback.

I am looking to enhance the designs to make it look more attractive. These are just an example and i wanted to get some feedback on how i can make wort6h for its price.

      Appreciate your assistance.

Hmm well I'm not the sort of person that would buy these but I would says $10-20 seems fair.

    • Thanks mate.. Ofcourse these are for target audience.. but again.. you never know anyone might buy them.

  • What size are the bags? Who is your main target audience? How much are these bags usually - keep in mind if you are aiming towards a specific target, they will most likely know how much they can get these for. Is there much competition for this? If so what do they do and how much do they charge?

I wouldn't ask what you think people would pay for them but rather work out what the best price is you can sell them for and actually work out a decent profit to make it worth your time. Factor in the following:

    Landed cost price
Paypal/Ebay Fees roughly 8% when you start out on final retail price
    Shipping Fees
GST (you don't charge GST though until you register and that doesn't happen until you hit $75K in sales a fin year)
Other overhead costs about 10% of sell price

If the landed cost is about $5 and you sell for $22.95 your estimated profit per item is about $5.92 which takes into account a shipping fee of about $6.50. Profit margin of about 25% which is OK. If you can sell 300 a month you could have a nice little part time business.

Scope out what other people are doing on ebay.com.au / ebay.co.uk and get an idea of the pricing from there - not sure how popular these will be in AU but who knows! Give it a whirl as with these types of things the worst possible case scenario is you sell them at cost and break even.

    Good luck!

    • This seems like the most logical step for the business part of things.
I'd also suggest polling the actual designs aswell not by price but by reception of style(By looking at those I know i'm not a target audience nor is anyone in my circle of friends or family so price wouldn't even come into the picture.)
Do you also have a demographic in mind (I'd say female maybe a given :P) But trend? age? style? or are these just a style of their own?

Good Luck with your venture tho. :)

      • From what I can gather, the biggest target demographic for these would be the diaspora from the Indian subcontinent. Also, these type of "ethnic" styles are quite popular among indo-philes.

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with OP in any way. I just know a fair bit about this stuff. :)

  • Check out Etsy, its a better alternative to Ebay for your type of products.

Who is your target audience? These products don't appeal to me at all, I wouldn't even pay $5 for them so I'm not a good person to ask…
