Smarthome.com.au - 25% off Selected Zwave Home-Automation Devices and Packages

30
ZWAVECLAIM

I've been keeping an eye out for Home automation products and found zwave to be the most popular, customisable, and extensible technology out there at the moment. Think zwave replaces the old c-bus and x10 technology. With HA, you can automate things like turning on lights when the door opens, or trigger the alarm remotely if you forgot to do it, turn off/on applicances automatically when you come home.. ideas are endless, and you just need to configre all your devices to respond accordingly.

This is from their website:

All products below receive 25% off at checkout. Just place your products in your cart and at check-out use the voucher code ZWAVECLAIM to receive your 25% off.

It certainly does not replace C-Bus. Proof: I work for Clipsal as a C-Bus system design engineer.

    • Such good proof.

  • A friend of mine has this in his house and it is very good.
You can do many things, but the cost quickly starts to add up!!

Just be aware that if you want to use the light switch automation, you'll need to ensure the wiring in your house supports this (my house does not, and I suspect most do not).

    X10 - Mains Wiring
    ZWave - Wireless
    C-Bus - Cat5 wiring

ZWave is just a commercial name for Zigbee, or the IEEE 802.15 standard for low power meshed comms. It hasn't had anywhere near the traction that was hoped, but given it's a real standard, not proprietary, and is newer than the others, its probably more of a coming thing than the other approaches. Mind, Wifi seems to be gaining for those devices connected to real mains wiring.

And yeah, it's more sensible than C-Bus going forward, since you aren't tied to one manufacturer - sorry lofty.

    • Actually C-Bus has a range of wireless products as well, named C-Bus wireless funnily enough. I would say it would depend on the application when choosing a control system. For a brand new house it would be beneficial to go with a wired solution. For a retrofit a wireless system would be a more cost effective solution due to the cost of rewiring. Although I would agree that zigbee is a far better solution than the wireless used in C-Bus wireless, I'm actually not a fan of C-Bus wireless. Having one manufacturer isn't particularly a bad thing when it comes to tech support and warranty issues. One point of contact. Trying to find out why a product isn't working with a product from another manufacturer can be a headache. Plus C-Bus readily integrates with a large number of 3rd party systems, from A/V to HVAC. If you're tech savvy you could even program something yourself through the C-Bus logic controller and integrate via RS232 or TCP/IP.

I'm glad I can actually say I'm working when browsing Ozbargain at work.

    • Are you sure about ZWave using the Zigbee protocol?

According to this article they are separate specifications:

  • What about home intercom systems - anyone remember those from the 1980s? No, I didn't think so.
