    I heard with these guys if you don't finish all of your soup, chef puts it straight back in the pot. Don't know if its true.

      I have tried their buffet in Burwood last week, it was fantastic.

      Not sure about the Chinatown branch though.

      I guess $16.50 per person for lunch is worth trying, especially for those who work in the city :)

      I used to work part time as a waiter when Burwood just opened, and unless they've had a massive change in policy they definitely don't take your soup and put it back into the pot. Now the soup that was still sitting in the bain marie, that stuff might be put back into the pot, I don't know. But typically it would be eaten by the staff after closing during staff meals anyway (by the way, the sushi always went first—it was a race to who could grab what first). I can guarantee that all the food leftover on your table went straight into the trash.

      I'm still disgusted at the amount of food wastage committed by people at all-you-can-eat places. This might sound a bit sadistic, but the few times the managers threatened to weigh all the leftover food on the table (hate to stereotype, it was always Mainland Chinese who piled food on the table), the look of misery and agony on the diners' faces trying to stuff the food down their gullet was quite satisfying. Usually after 5-10 minutes or so, the managers let them off with a warning but when you clean their table up you would see that the diners had tried to cram and hide the food in as many places as they could. As a side note, while I was working there, no one was ever actually weighed on wastage. I don't even think they have a set of balances for that purpose.

    I would rather go to Kitchen Workshop - at least they don't treat you like 2nd class citizens there.
    Around this price, you can almost go to Conservatory or Melba on weeknights.

    WTF cuisine is "Asian"?

      As in they need to be specific.
      Is it basically Japanese? Indonesian? Korean? Chinese? etc
      Asia is a huge continent with many, many deeply different cuisines.
      There is no "Asian". Its about as silly as being in Asia and seeing "western" food on offer.
      (Its usually burgers or Americaised Italian)

      • Unfortunately, we live in a world where the unknown is often generalised. Even with Chinese food, there is such a wide variety and range, calling it under the umbrella term "Chinese" food is just as silly as "Western" or "European" food. What do you mean by "Chinese" food, southern Cantonese, or northern foods such as noodles? How far do you go? Some places such as Malaysia are a melting pot of cultures, and as a result they have a massive mix of cuisine from many different origins. Do you deny their culture, and break it down to Indian/Indonesian/Cantonese foods instead?

        In any case, answering your question (at least from my knowledge of Burwood ChinaBar): They rotate their menu on a regular basis, but most of the food is Cantonese Chinese. They also serve Indian foods such as curries and roti, and also other Chinese cuisines such as Peking duck (dinner only) and Hainanese Chicken Rice. There is sushi and also sashimi (dinner only as well). They have a seafood bar, but again it is quite limited during lunch.

        I hope that clarifies things a little bit for you. In the end, we are living in Australia, and although with the advent of Internet, many people like to think they are well informed on the authenticity of what they eat, in the end the owners (who ARE Chinese, see China Bar Group) are running a business, and they'll market themselves in whatever way that will sell.

        • Yes you make some good points, especially regarding the break down of Chinese food - so many varieties but in general I would think most people would stop at an individual country (China is a different case as it is so old, so huge). Korean, Japanese, Thai etc are starting points most people are comfortable with.
          "Asian", for me anyways, is too non-specific. It doesn't speak about pride or knowledge of any particular cuisine and as such I would expect pretty average, generic food from such a place.
          Can you imagine a Greek or say a Spanish, or a Danish restaurant being comfortable with being called simply European?

    Hmm.this is a good thread to hang on.i can find some good places to dine through the discussions.but I'd avoid china bar.i have a curse with them.everytime I eat there, diaria will follow me for some reason.

      Burwood is $10 cheaper on full price I think and a little more wiggle room.
      Looks like China Bar city is struggling, just walked past the place couple of days ago and the upper level is now a separate restaurant.

      • They charge their RRP too expensively for their food and use these vouchers site to give heavy discount. If they start charging their RRP reasonablely i say $20 per head for lunch and 35 for dinner, the place will be packed again.

        • Even $35 per head is cutting it sort of close to be honest when there is unlimited seafood served. There A LOT of customers who just turn up and eat nothing but seafood especially oysters and they eat A LOT of that. Then theres staffing costs and other fixed costs.

          Kitchen Workshop enforces a 200g prawns or 1/2 dozen oysters limit.

        • I'm surprised they're still open. When I was working at Burwood, I always heard whispers amongst the managers that the owner must be hemorrhaging money on the Signature restaurant (singular at the time). That was before the price hikes though, so I dunno the state of their business these days.

  • From my experience, every time China Bar comes up with their B1G1F promo, it gets sold out within 2-3hrs. The instant one is no different - 3 hrs. Once they had a B1G1F on their FB, that promptly went within like 20mins! While everyone's arguing about how bad the food or service is, others are snapping up the vouchers chopchop!

  • man I've heard lots of people complaining about the experience/food but my personal experience has been fantastic in both Burwood and the CBD joints. Yes it is most definitely not a cheap indulgence but I've thoroughly enjoyed the food selection, variety and quality - it is always completely packed and has a nice overall vibe - people always seem to enjoy themselves inside and there are a lot of Asian diners so authentically speaking the food can't be too bad.

    Overall I'd personally most definitely recommend the place - especially with a price discount.
