ORIGINAL POST
For some reason, Lenovo is offering a hefty $165 discount if you select the "Arctic Blue" display colour when configuring the E330. There are three base configurations on offer - this applies the the i3-3120M and i5-3230M models (the i3-3110M cannot be reconfigured).

After changing the screen to Arctic Blue, the standard coupons also apply. For the i3-3120M, you can use SEPWELC2013 coupon. For the i5-3230M, the E330DEAL coupon provides a slightly bigger discount on the base config, while SEPWELC2013 may be better if you add upgrades.

if it crash their server, they sure will take this VERY SERIOUSLY!!

    • Its probably best for everyone to wait for the email so its a legit complain and we address "jv"'s concern of crashing their Lenovo servers

  • I don't think Lenovo will lose any money by honouring the deal.
From my understanding the cost of manufacturing a laptop( core i3 E531 ) is far less than $336.

    • +1

And the price will come under -expense- when shown in Balance Sheet as ADVERTISEMENT !! i believe !!
Its not loss !! not at all !!
Promotion rather than mistake a good idea !! probably..

      • That's what I was thinking. How much does a good advertisement run cost them? What is their main aim? Creating good will towards their brand and selling product. I'm sure these orders would have come in a lot cheaper than an advertising campaign, and cancelling these orders will/has created A LOT of "ill will" towards their brand. Just through me there are at least nine people directly (and through them who knows how many indirectly) who wont ever consider purchasing a Lenovo product again through this experience…

Don't these people have any marketing sense? God, even Deal Extreme gave me a $30 voucher when they did the same thing a few months back…

"Lenovo gave me a crappy email and the opportunity to purchase the same product at a much higher price… wow thanks…

        ^^
hmmm might have to start making t-shirts…

  • Could everyone who is going to complain using the link mentioned by Sshanaz few posts above give him/her a +. I'm doing one now….

e confirmed that your order is cancelled, but the problem is we unable to apply the money to the new order, you need to withdraw the payment and re-pay for the new order 4246174634.

Really? I thought they were more concerned with making bigger profits…

      • Thanks for your words! I'll get over it.

It seems like a lot of people are pretty disappointed here.

I'd like to encourage everyone to file a complaint.
Lenovo's pricing mistake is not THAT big of a deal, but their response is (letting sales team misinform you about pricing, slow response to fixing problem, no formal admittance and apology, false cancellation on behalf of you, deleting facebook comments, etc.). By letting this go unchecked, we may be setting a precedence to more sleazy tactics by companies to cover up their mistakes.

  • I will do the complaint but Lenovo will defend saying that they have an explicit condition on their website which allows them to deny sale because of 'price errors'. So really you are accepting that by buying this product.

    • +4

I have wasted 30 minutes of my life to place 2 x orders with this disgraceful company and I not going let them escape just like that!!

They can defend pricing error but not misleading claim (Cancellation of order as per customer request email). The regulators will only take action if they become aware of an issue so go ahead and lodge complaint with ACCC.

      As per definition of ACCC,

"It is illegal for a business to make statements that are incorrect or likely to create a false impression. This includes advertisements or statements in any media (print, radio, television, social media and online) or on product packaging, and any statement made by a person representing your business.

For example, your business must not make false or misleading claims about the quality, value, price, age or benefits of goods or services, or any associated guarantee or warranty. Using false testimonials is also illegal.

When assessing whether conduct is likely to mislead or deceive, consider whether the overall impression created by the conduct is false or inaccurate."

      • +7

30 minutes??? I've spent hours ordering and just reading all the comments alone. If you've only lost 30 minutes, your doing better then the rest of us here.

Mind you, it has been entertaining I am not complaining about that. Time well spent.

        • +1

It took me 2 hours to read comments on Ozbargain before making a decision to proceed with the order.

    • The thing about terms and conditions are, they can't just overwrite your legal rights. I'm not saying this one does (will require more research first), but what if their terms and conditions had said "and our delivery driver will kill your dog when he delivers the laptop". Do you think that would then make it legal for him to do that if you accepted?

    • +3

The issue is not with the fact they had a pricing error, but the way they have handled this. Still no official word from them, just a selection of people getting cancellation emails so far. They should have just put their hands up right away and admitted the error and promptly issues refunds rather than messing about sending out untrue emails that don't even mention refunds at all.

It is almost as if some mid-level manager is trying to sweep it under the carpet.

If they had just acted properly and swiftly on Monday it would all be over by now… though it could be easily argued a technology company the size of Lenovo should have acted on Saturday.

  • +4

As Mentioned by "Sshanaz " everyone please write to : Australian Competition and Consumer Commission :

    http://www.accc.gov.au/contact-us/contact-the-accc/consumer-…

Stating the reason as mentioned by "Gav" as:

    1. Numerous items mispriced, not just one
    2. Company reps confirming not a pricing mistake through the time period stated
    3. Issue current for at least 2 days
    4. Cancellation reason incorrect (for E330)
    5. Monies taken prior to cancellation
    6. Orders still listed as active after cancellation email issued
    7. No mentions of refund in cancellation email (for those with monies taken)

This is the only way we can teach lesson to Lenovo so that they dont mistakes in the future and waste our time.

    • you are not teaching anyone anything with this, many price error happen before on ozbargain(eg. Harvey Norman, Amazon, Kogan and many more) many complain to the ACCC was submitted. No outcome was ever made by the ACCC. If a pricing error occur and it is cover by their website term and condition There is not a thing they could do or will do.

      • +4

yep. at best, the accc will send a stern letter to Lenovo who will then put in the circular filing cabinet

they cant force lenovo to honour the sales

      • ACCC is a toothless tiger. Don't bother wasting your time. This happens every time a popular deal gets reneged. Retailers continue to get away these practices and always will.

    • I did it, took me 5 minutes.

  • Finally received cancellation email.

Has anybody successfully received a refund yet?

  • +2

If you want to have an impact post an honest review on product review sites. If you want to waste more of your time write to the ACCC.

  • Just got the cancellation email stating incorrect prices as the motive.

  • +1

Agree. NSW Fair Trading and ACCC will just say sorry can't help you because they have a policy/condition in place which you are abiding by buying a product from there. I have been this route before, so dont bother wasting your time :D

    • +4

Pricing Error can't be challenged as it's clearly mentioned in their Terms and Conditions however they can't escape with false claims.

  • Dang, just got my cancellation email. Thought I was gonna be one of the lucky ones to get order honored :(

  • Got my email. Said was cancelled due to pricing error.

      • That's why I said I wished they'd hurry up and cancel my order, it's still saying being verified

      • I thought PayPal refund happen immediately!
3-5 days is the time for them(Lenovo) to earn some interest or use it elsewhere…..

  • hm, the noise cancelling headphones are still on special for $1; surely this is a price error as well… I am wondering when they are going to fix that.

  • noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • -2

Any one's order is cancelled when they are released for manufacturing?

  • The letter is pretty cold and infuriating. Pretty pathetic of them to issue the letter at this point in time following that much enquiry to their help desks

    • -1

the letter is only a template…they sent same letter to everyone. No personalised email …*sigh

  • I had 'released to manufacturing' status on a stock i3 e330. Just checked status and it is now 'cancelled'. I have no email notification yet and my money hasn't been released from my cc (I realise this will take a while). I have just filled out the ACCC form to fight the power of Lameovo.

  • must fight for this and take it to consumer affairs .. lol … bloody big companies are messing up with these errors. disgraceful…. 1st Kogan and now Lenovo … bit skeptical about too good to be true offers ..:(

  • +1

Their "rejection" offers me the chance to email them.
    I think I'll tell them about the 7 P's

  • +9

I ordered late in the piece not because I was worried about it being a 'price error' but because I was still checking to see if it was worth it. As an example MSY have just advertised a HP 15" laptop with i7-3632QM, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 1GB R7670M for $699. This is actually very close to the 'price error' price of the i7 Lenovo.

As a further example I bought a laptop for my sister in law for $599 which was an Acer with i5/GT640M about 8 MONTHS ago. Surely with haswell cores now around this sort of run out isn't that much out of the ballpark? (I ordered a $470 E531 i3). Fair enough if they're going to lose money on it I don't expect them to honour it but I for one was not thinking I was 'taking advantage' of any error but making a purchase on a legitimate offer.

I have yet to receive any email regarding any cancellation and I am very surprised that it took Lenovo so long to rectify the website especially after people have called and confirmed the prices were 'correct', leading me to order on that basis of 'if it were an error they would have said/done something'. That should have rung alarm bells to Lenovo. If my order is to be cancelled I will be quite upset that it will take so long for them to actually notify me and continued to allow the orders to be made for such an extended period of time. If anything, I hope they learn from their mistake.

  • Anyone knows why there isn't any law in Australia to prevent online shopping companies to get away with so-called pricing error?
In this instance, the pricing error went on for more than 2 days. Granted they were on weekend, but surely a big company like LamENOVO would have their IT support in other countries with cheaper labour cost.

    • It all depends on where the company operates and the jurisdiction. Websites are notoriously difficult as they may be governed by their local jurisdiction (e.g. the US) but even so the commonwealth laws should still apply re Trade Practices Act legislation and to a lesser extent the Sale of Goods act or Fair Trading Acts of relevant States.

Even it being a weekend, I think with something like a 24/7 shop or online shop you are still accountable obviously. The question is to what degree, which I couldn't say (I do criminal not consumer law).

      • +1

sure there are laws for blatantly deceptive behaviour but do you honestly think Lenovo did this deliberately?

think about how many man hours is required to reverse these orders

everyone is thinking malicious intent when its just a bad mistake

    • +2

Just because you're a bigger company doesn't mean different rules should apply.

    • Because it would be a stupid law that would send good companies (esp small ones) to the wall, reduce competition and require every company to increase their margins on EVERYTHING to cover the TIMES it does happen, as it WILL happen to EVERY one of them at some point. It might be good for one purchase but overall it would be a BAD thing. There IS a llaw that deals with it and that aw EXPLICITLY acknowledges that people make legitimate pricing errors every day, and EXPLICITLY says that they have NO responsibility to do anything other than remove it from sale until the error is corrected once they figure it out.
As I said before, I you put the price of your car on the windscreen in multipe sheets and part fell off, would you still sell it for the price left? would you sell a $20k car for 2k, or 200? What about if you told your kid to put it on and instead of 9,995 they put 5,999?
You wouldnt would you - you would apologise politely, say what the correct price was and get on with your life. Anyone that expected you to honour it and got agro simply because of the 'inconvenience' of seeing the wrong price - you wouldnt feel charitable to them would you? How about if they badmouthed you all over the place and called you a scammer, simply cos of an accident? Wouldnt that feel great - totally fair?

  • They just posted an announcement on their facebook..lameee..

  • My order information was just changed: ThinkPad Noise-Cancelling Earbuds, Estimated Delivery Date: 2013/09/22.
    No information for laptop yet.

    • Probably more than half of the orders are already manufactured by Lenovo manufacturing plants in China.

    • +5

We are living in a society of blame blame blame. It is just so lame. Lamer than Lamenovo. Our society is damned for keep thinking of damages as a result of some simple human mistake no matter how minor it is.

      • +2

Minor damage comes with minor compensation then. How about an official apology letter instead of nothing from them at all? Or they are waiting for Gerry Harvey to draft them another professional statement?

      • +1

Clearly it was a pricing error when the dollars are deducted after selecting better display.
It was worth a try, it didn't work, bad luck.
All email sent out were just a standard emails, probably they selected wrong one (saying buyer requested cancellation.
Some people have genuine reason for feeling upset, but some just lost the plot.

    • +1

Are you feeling a bit lighter after posting it?

      • +1

        Get your credit limit increased.

  • I think this whole special thing was a well planned campaign by Lenovo marketing team.
Somebody tried to bump up the sales by giving the special offer, and the sales reps confirmed the validity of offer. They can't just get away by saying it was a pricing error when their sales reps have confirmed the pricing in the weekend.

It is ridiculous to see them offering to sell the same laptop for so called CORRECT PRICE.

  • +3

I just called an spoke to a manager. Apparently they said the error for the artic blue and FHD screen was due to a subtraction not addition. However if you look at the pricing now there is no "addition" for the artic blue spec and the "addition" for the FDH screen is 99 dollars and does not match the 176 discount we received. Even one of their managers was giving me incorrect information. There argument and reasoning doesn't match up.

  • +3

    Just got the cancel email.

    It's war.

    • Im going to continue my earlier anology. You see a car you like with a for sale price of $2000. You know that that is the BEST deal you will EVER see on one - you think gotta be too good to be true. You drool over it, contact the guy, have a look, and when it finally comes time to talk turkey you both realise there has been a mixup and a 0 has fallen off the windscreen - It's 20k.
Do you make a massive scene infront of his neighbours and family? beat the guy up? Call him a scammer to everyone you can find? Or just shake his hand, say fair enough and walk away? Who would be the one in the wrong if you did any of the former?

  • +2

They just posted about the issue in their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/LenovoANZ
Time to write them a public complaint.

    • I like the picture of the Lenovo next to a torts law textbook…

      • Should be contract law?

  • +2

What surprises me is they waited 'til Tuesday to tell us this.

  • +12

I still have an e531 saved in my cart. Anyone know how long you can keep an item saved in your cart? I might wait a week when this has all died down and see what happens when I submit my order.

    • The default order history view is 7 days. So at a guess I'd give it a crack on Friday.

      • +1

Thanks. I saved it in my cart either Monday morning or Monday evening. I don't expect it to be honoured nor do I need one, but if it arrives I would pass it on to a fellow ozbargainer at cost price.

Targeted online marketing boosts PC maker Lenovo

    • +3

Did they make this purposely to increase their traffic ? a bit suspicious

      • Not surprise if it worked on HN and Kogan before. Having said that at least Graysonline and Kogan handled pricing error better than Lenovo. I have not received any cancellation email yet.

      • If I was a cynic I'd believe that was a possibility.

        • I would think that this is the exact opposite. OzBargainers are not, on the whole, their target demographic. Their target market is the corporate and workstation environment, not average home end-users.

    • +1

Maybe they did pull this stunt on purpose so that they could get hold of our details
I wont be surprised if they sell our name address email and phone number details to other telemarketers or spammers!

      • The spam has started already! I've just received 2x emails from Budget PC in Victoria (who I've never heard of, or corresponded with), offering me a (surprise, surprise!) Lenovo laptop for $599.

Clearly our 'friends' at Lenovo HAVE passed on (sold?) the email addresses of the many potential buyers that their weekend exploit has unearthed.

        • +1

There is a deal posted on ozbargain http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/116617

Normally there isn't anything wrong with Budget PC, they've just chosen a bad time to post a Lenovo deal…

Perhaps they thought it was a good time..

They've had pretty popular deals in the past and I don't think they are related to lenov..

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/budgetpc.com.au

        • I haven't heard of Budget previously, much less signed up for their spam advertisements and have just replied to Lenovo's cancellation letter with the following:

          Attention: Chris Jowsey

As if the below debacle wasn't a serious enough customer relations failure by Lenovo, it is now apparent that Lenovo have passed on the names and addresses of the many potential customers who were misled thereby. As a result, spam is now arriving from your dealer Budget PC in Mt Waverley, offering to sell me a Lenovo laptop.

In the footer, Budget PC's email states, "You are receiving this email because you opted in at our website." I did no such thing - I have never even heard of Budget PC. Their email clearly results from Lenovo Australia improperly distributing the names and addresses of potential customers, harvested by Lenovo's misleading website pricing.

Please advise immediately what action will be taken by Lenovo to rectify the blatant breach of privacy which this misuse of customer information represents.

        • So the ONLY place you have ever used this email was when ordering with Lenovo?
If it isnt (pretty sure here) then why would would your top suspect be Lenovo? Why would you believe that one of the largest companies in the world would need to sell your details (rather than just quietly feed them to the chinese govt who part own them). They dont even target the consumer PC market, and the potential cost to them of doing so (as their real business is corporate high security environments) is more than they could ever make from some tiny dealer of a dealer of a dealer.

        • +1

Simple pricing error turns into conspiracy theory…
          Oh dear.

  • +7

If this truly was a pricing error, one would think that Lenovo should have robust internal controls in place to prevent these sort of mistakes. We accept that humans make mistakes but to not have policy in place to prevent and cope with it is daft.

    1. Checking and confirmation of online pricing.
    2. Manager approval prior to website pricing change.
    3. Checking of online coupon codes.
    4. Monitoring of online sales - abnormal volumes, spikes in sales.
    5. Feedback and escalation of customer comments from online and telephone sales staff.
    6. Confirming cancellations prior to sending cancellation emails.
      etc.

Lenovo has very inefficient and weak internal controls to let this go unchecked for so long. I would presume that it is now an absolute nightmare to weed through all the sales, find all the unacceptable configurations and reverse all the orders and payments. I hope that people at Lenovo have a good look at their policies and learn from their mistakes.

  • +6

Complain on their Facebook, love the comments people are making!

  • +1

    Dear X
Your order has been cancelled as you requested.

We thank you for your interest in our products and hope we can help you in the future.

    Kind regards
    Lenovo Australia

I swear every time i read 'as you requested' i get infuriated.

  • People had confirmed talking with online sales members that this wasn't a price error so in terms of that statement cant we complain with sound evidence demonstrating they are in the wrong? Did anyone screen shot them talking with an online sales person?

  • they now have 15% off..wth.. http://imgur.com/MC7ZWFV

    • +1

It's for the upper-spec E531 laptops and I saw that (15% off) yesterday, maybe even the day before. Pretty sure that's not new.

  • The only hope for me now is to get the 9$ back from Starthere.com.au :-) let's see if that comes through.
