Hopefully this is a good enough deal to post as my first (and hopefully the link works).
Ultima IV (one of the best computer-based RPGs ever) is currently available free from the iOS app store. Apparently it's the Commodore 64 version.

I had the same issue while at uni…20 years ago….
How does a 500k? game turn into a 135mb download..
Good point… no idea!
man, brings back fond memories…..
yup - my first ever RPG Question II, my 2nd - Ultima IV and these 2 are the catalyst to get me hooked to PC games for a LONG while.
It's like you posted my comment before me :)
Not sure, even an emulator shouldn't be that big.

Just think how many pixels they have to use just to make the one DOS sized pixel??? LoL
This game was from the days when they included maps, instructions and other materials in box to discourage piracy. From memory you couldn't complete the game without these materials. I hope they are nice hi-res versions. Will find out when my download finishes.
From the desciption:
Digital copies of materials included in the original Ultima IV including the ‘Player Reference Card by Lord British,’ ‘History of Britannia as told by Kyle the Younger,’ ‘Book of Mystic Wisdom as told by Philpop the Weary,’ ‘Ultima IV Map of Britannia,’ and assorted images
I would have expected it to be a few MB including the emulators and shit.. but 135MB… far out!
Similar thing with the Chrono Trigger iOS game, the SNES ROM was like 4MB but the download is 615MB… Go figure.
Maybe it has an intro cinematic?
dont think the original ultima IV was 100mb.
that is about 90 floppy disk
Edit:
it could be compressed, requiring less than 90 floppy disk
The C64 only have a double density drive, and you would have to flip the floppy disk around manually
These stored 360KB, so 135MB is 375 disks
That splash menu that they've used probably exceeds the space of the game itself.
He's right. But I worked it out to be about 406 disks based on the 170KB disks after being double sided.
I remeber the DS/DD disks used to cost (my Dad) a fortune. But with the emergence of the ‘Pre-OzBargainer’, you would’ve spent the $10-$20 on a special hole-punch to notch the side out of a SS/DD and make it double sided!
+1 vote for the trip down Nostalgia Lane…
My parents bought this for me when they went to Singapore on a junket in 1988. 4 floppy disks of awesomeness. For my apple 2 compatible.
Awesome. Thanks.
If there's one thing I really love, it's great memories! And I think that's exactly what I'll leave this one as! ;)
Mind you, in saying that, I did recently get the Leisure Suit Larry and Police Quest series for PC!
Leather Goddesses of Phobos
Once upon the time the protagonist of a video game actually adventures out to seek virtues — honesty, compassion, valor, justice, honour, sacrifice, spirituality and humility.
These days you just kill everyone in sight…
Only if you want to. I finished Dishonored without killing anyone.

And that's why I still love CS 1.6 after all these years. Looking at some noob's head in your scope is a great way to blow off a bit of steam after a bad day.
I never played this, but I really enjoyed Ultima 7. It was very advanced for it's time (except the combat and statistics, which were basic). Ultima Underworld was another ground breaking game. It is ashame that EA closed down the pioneering origin studio. Now there are so few truly commendable recent single player RPGs (Witcher 1/1, Bethesda games, possibly Drakensang).
Agree with you in general, there haven't been any involving, complex, and thought provoking RPGs for a long time. There have been a few ok ones though:
The first Dragon Age was not too bad (although a little RPG-lite).
The Gothic series was reasonable and interesting.
I have, but haven't played, Two Worlds I or II.
The Divinity series has some fans.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was supposed to be good?
Arx Fatalis was one that flew under the radar a bit.
Thank you for mentioning those other titles. I never played Arx Fatalis but read that it was a modernized Ultima Underworld. I played Gothic 1 and thought it was promising for a new franchise; Gothic 3 was apparently more adventurous but also more buggy, but community patches and mods should eleveate it to worth playing status now.
Other RPG game series worth of mention, old & new, are Sacred, Torchlight, Temple of Elemental Evil, Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale/Planescape, Wizardry 8, World of Ultima: Savage Empires & Martian Dreams (Ultima 6 engine), Titan Quest, Star Trail: Realms of Arkania (the new remake is apparently aweful), Darklands (DOS game set in 'greater' Germany), Final Fantasy 7, Neverwinter Nights (the addons are better than the base game campaign), Arcanum, Vampire, Fallout, Knights of the Old Republic(an), Betrayal at krondor, Mass Effect.
yeah, definitely worth getting community patches for Gothic 3.
Darklands is awesome! I spent so many hours playing that game… although I could never get very far without dying. I love the character creation mechanic too :)
Darklands was huge!!! I can't even remember the number of disks it came on. And the size the of manual was daunting! Totally loved it. Finally finished the main dragon killing via cheats though… but I admit, darklands was THOROUGHLY immersive!
I remember playing the prequel to ultima , called Alkabeth. So simple
Ahh if only they would bring out AutoDuel by Origin Systems too…
One of most loved games of that era…
EA is chuming the waters for their other inapp purchase to death Ultima game they recently released. Clever strategy
Is that a game about Moses?
why do I get a message that this game is not available in the australian store. Do I need to change stores to get this?
Why, especially during exam week :(
