  • Looks like in app purchases are required for tech upgrades, ill give it a go though.

What's the bet it'll be nigh on impossible to finish without them ;).

    • Looks like in app purchases are required,

Only if you want to progress faster

The large number of +ve reviews speak for the game

      • true that, hence my plus vote and download anyway ;).

  • I enjoyed this gane and never used IAP, however I haven't completed it. It does get quite challenging as you get later in the game. Very good tower defense game.

well, the game isn't that great. Got it from previous deal and deleted week after.

  • I am a fan of tower defense but did not quite like this one. There are much better games on iOS IMHO.

Enjoyable game, but it becomes evident that you're unable to complete many levels with a perfect score (or even complete the level at all) without in-app purchases, or super-human ability. Still, very entertaining and can't complain too much for $0 — at least it is not ad-sponsored.

Yep. I've proboably put 50+ hours into both Toy Defence and Toy Defence 2. There is no way to finish the game without buying in-app powerups (which I'll never do). You'll get maybe 1/2 way through the game if you don't.

It's a simple formula. You gun shoots say 100 damage and the enemy have 80 health. Easy right? Next level the enemy has 90 health, then 100, then 110 etc. So by level 4 you can't kill the enemy in time before they are out of range. That's the way the game is designed, instead of say double hitting the first guy and leaving the 2nd, it'll just "almost" kill every unit, so you end up not killing any, just damaging say 80 units to 2% health, and losing the level entirely, because you let too many though. Therefore you need to keep upgrading your weapons.

The upgrades are cheap in the first few levels but again, like the enemy unit's health, the upgrade costs keep increasing too. So by about level 10 or so, infantry have more hit points than say a level 5 tank. By about halfway through the game, even if you're playing perfectly and never let a single unit past (I'm speaking from experience) you can no longer afford to upgrade your weapons to finish a level without leaking units. Then you're on a slippery slope of only letting 1 unit leak, then only 10 he next level, then 50, then all.

It's designed so that you end up doing about 98% damage to units, so you think "I almost made it, I'll just buy a small boost to get that last 2% and I'll be fine". Of course the next level does the same thing again and you're stuck in an endless loop of always doing 98% of the damage and just needing a little more.

That's how they get people to spend $200 on smurfberries, gold stars or whatever the hell these pay-to-win games use.

The game also "rewards" you with upgrade points for spamming your friends via email, facebook and twitter. :(
